Co D, 50th Field Artillery |
I am not sure if Ike Russell trained at Camp Bowie, there was a 50th Arty, unit that had trained at this Fort. Currently, we do not have his WWI records. Camp Bowie Tarrant County Texas - World War 1 The 36th Infantry Division was originally activated as the 15th Division, an Army National Guard The new unit also received a new commander, Major General Edwin St. John Greble. The designation was changed to the 36th Division in July 1917. The final composition of the 36th Division consisted of the 71st and 72nd Infantry Brigades, the 141st and 142nd Infantry Regiments belonging to the 71st. The 143rd and 144th Infantry Regiments were attached to the 72nd Brigade. Also belonging to the 71st was the 132nd Machine Gun Battalion. Similarly, the 72nd received the 133rd Machine Gun Battalion. The 61st Field Artillery Brigade, 131st, 132nd, and 133rd Field Artillery Regiments, 111th Regiment Engineers, 111th Signal Battalion and the 111th Supply Train comprised the rest of the 36th Division. The unit trained at Camp Bowie, Texas, then in Tarrant County, the site of the present-day city of Fort Worth. The unit was sent to Europe in July 1918 and conducted major operations in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive On 9–10 October, the unit participated in heavy combat near the village of St. Etienne Following this victory, which included the capture of several hundred German men and officers, as well as artillery, the unit launched an assault near an area known as "Forest Farm." During World War I, the division suffered 2,584 casualties, 466 killed in action and 2,118 wounded in action. The unit was inactivated in June 1919. ====== Ike may have died in Battle 1 day

Seventeenth Division (Regular Army) Popularly known as the "Thunderbolt Division." A distinctive shoulder insignia was not adopted. Organized at Camp Beauregard, Alexandria, La., in the early part of August, 1918. The 5th and 29th Regular Army Infantry Regiments were ordered to Camp Beauregard as a part of this division and these two regiments furnished the nucleus for the organization of two other infantry regiments of the division. The artillery brigade of the division was organized at Camp Bowie, Texas, and never actually joined the division at Camp Beauregard. The engineer regiment of the division was organized at Camp Humphries, Va., and joined the division at Camp Beauregard on Nov. 7, 1918. The majority of the units of the division were organized by the 1st of November and underwent intensive training in preparation for service overseas. Demobilization of the division was begun on Jan. 18, 1919, and all organizations not belonging to the Regular Army had been demobilized by Jan. 31, 1919. Commanders of the division: Col. H. E. Jackson, Aug. 6, 1918, to Sept. 1, 1918; Col. James A. Irons, Sept. 1 to Nov. 1, 1918; Brig. Gen. Robert W. Mearns, Nov. 1, 1918 to Jan. 8, 1919; Maj. Gen. Henry C. Hodges, Jr. Jan. 8, 1919 until demobilization. The division was composed of the following organizations: 17th Hqs. Troops; 33d, 34th Inf. Brigs.; 5th, 83d, 29th 84th Inf.; 49th, 50th, 51st Machine Gun Bn.; 17th Arty. Brig. (49th, 50th, 51st Fld. Arty., 17th Trench Mortar Battery); 217th Engr. Regt. And Train; 217th Fld. Sig. UP^ My guess is this photo was taken 1900/1901 after death of father 1898 they lived in Wamba Bowie Co TX, where John's mother died in 1917, Extreme Right is Charlie born 1886, he was 14 in 1900, now John married Emma Nix, 1893, Emma Nix Baker had passed away before this photo, Homer on the horse was born 1898 same year as fathers death, he appears to be about 3 or 4 years old in this photo, making 1901 a better choice as to when this photo was taken. John W must have been living at home, at this time, he married his 2nd Wife, Rosanna about 1909, she was born in Cass Co Texas. |
