It wasn't until 1911
that a permanent church building was built, in Golightly, until this
time, church was held in make-shift establishments. The Golightly
Church pictured above was assembled from another church located in Camp
Croft, now a State Park in Spartanburg, was donated to the folks of Golightly, in 1947, after WWII, with
the stipulation that they disassemble and reassemble the church in
Golightly. The Golightly Family was instrumental
in organizing religious services in Golightly, one of there many
contributions to their community and country, during the pre and post
colonial times.
The History of the Golightly Church goes back to
Thurza Golightly's father, David. Several books cover this story
in some detail. One book I know of, that can still be
purchased, "A History of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church
1858-1996", this book contains histories of many churches in the
Spartanburg area, and contains many Pedigree and Family Charts of
descendants, including a chapter on the Golightly Church. Go to
our Family Book
Store to get the details, on ordering a copy.
Another book that is, most certainly, available in
Spartanburg, SC, local libraries, "Golightly Methodist
Church History, Oct 7, 1973, by Laura Irene Fleming Owens". |
