The Cranes have been migrating
through this area for millions of years,
at night they roost in the Platte River, one of the last prairie rivers, during
the
day they feed in surrounding wetlands & prior years corn fields, they must gain
most
of their body weight, in this area, before continuing their northern migration,
they receive
support from organizations like the Rowe Sanctuary and others, and viewed
between Grand
Island and Kearney Nebraska, mid March is the peak migration numbers, Gibbon
Nebraska,
between Kearney & Grand Island is one major areas to view concentrations of
Sandhill Cranes.
This is the last major migration of any bird species in the United States, now
about 600,000 in number.
