Sarah's Gravestone is currently located on property of R. D. Murphy, which is the part of the original land grant of 485 acres, in Union Co. (District), S.C. to Sarah's husband Simon, in 1773 from George III King of Great Britain, France and Ireland. This land is located on the South side of the Tyger River in Berkley County on the forks between the Broad and Saluda Rivers. Was not long after settling in what now is Cross Keys Community, that Simon found it necessary to make a trip back to his old home in Virginia. (Surry Co., VA) Somewhere along the way, he was killed by either Tories or Indians. His body was tentatively identified and returned to his old home in Virginia for burial. His estate was administered on Nov. 8, 1783 by his widow, Sarah Duke Murphy and her eldest son, Mark Murphy. Sarah Duke was the daughter of William Norman and Mary or Sarah Green Duke, Sr. William Norman was a school teacher and had settled in Butt Co., N.C. |
