Purpose of this Webpage:
To assemble all known information on West Pope and connect them to
Mildred White Whitehead's mother Frances "Fanny" [Pope?] Whitehead
Prove our Wm Whitehead is connected to the Edgecombe Co NC Whitehead's

Update: June 30, 2018
As of today, the 2 original deeds with this Wm Whitehead's wife listed
make it appear, that this is NOT our William Whitehead, I had ordered
two original deeds, posted below, that show a name other that
Frances or Fanny, for me, West Pope is NOT the father our Frances Whitehead.
We currently do not know the names of all of West Pope's children.
It is my determination that researchers saw 'transcripts' of the 2 deeds below, that did not show
Wm's wife's name, and determined that West Pope was Frances father, incorrectly.

What do we know Currently?

1. What former researchers have concluded: That  West Pope is the father of Frances "Fanny" Whitehead?
2. One Particular Deed of Gift from West Pope Sr to a son-in-law named William Whitehead. (See #8)
3. West Pope said to have married a Mary Whitehead of Edgecombe Co NC.
4. We know some of his male children, and 1 Elizabeth Pope.
5. Jacob Whitehead possible father of our William Whitehead lived in Edgecombe Co NC.
6. The Pope's and Whitehead's of Edgecombe were on many records together.
7. Mary, West Pope's wife remarried abt 1784 to Christopher Ing.

8. The record that should inspire us to continue down the West Pope Path!
To note, our William Whitehead would have been in his 20's in 1764.
The
Question is!, could this be our William Whitehead? I have ordered this deed...

HISTORY OF EDGECOMBE COUNTY

"... The Assembly met early in the spring of 1733 at Edenton, at which time the erection of Edgecombe was
confirmed by the Council. At the same session Governor Burrington appointed Captain John SPIER and
CAPT. WILLIAM WHITEHEAD
, two worthy citizens, as Justices of the Peace for the precinct. These two
men were among the earliest settlers, and were afterwards honored with trustworthy and honorable.
positions in the county government..."

1734

...Henry Gaston was appointed as a member of the Governor's Council in 1734 by the Governor. One of the most
important events, having influence directly upon the cause of the entire controversy, was exposed when Edgecombe
asserted her rights as a precinct of Albemarle County in 1734 and sent five delegates,
Mr. William Whitehead, John Spier,
Bar Maguinny, David Hopper, and John Milliken to the Assembly...

1739

The corrupt officials in Edgecombe was no infrequent thing prior to this time. As early as 1739 Colonel Whitehead and
others had been removed from the position of Justice of the Peace by reason of unpardonable negligence and corrupt methods
in the execution of the duties of their office.

1761

...William Haywood colonel of the regiment of Edgecombe in 1761, and Jacob Whitehead lieutenant-colonel at
the same time. These men, however, were incapable of active service, and were, to a considerable degree,
inefficient because of old age and lack of proper training. The Council of Safety, therefore, began its recruiting
under very adverse conditions.

Company I was formed April 21, 1861, with John S. Dancy, captain; A. M. J. Whitehead, first lieutenant;...

May 16, 1862, Captain Dancy being detailed as quartermaster of the regiment, A. M. J. Whitehead was put in
command. Powell was made first lieutenant, and in December was promoted captain. The entire company, along
with the regiment, was captured during the bombardment of Fort Bartow.
