The Denison Homestead
(Stonington Connecticut)

Many Thanks to Mrs Pat H. Boone
for her help with our Denison Connection

The Denison Homestead (1717) is the only old house in Connecticut, successfully
restored - 1717 kitchen, Colonial and Civil War bedrooms, 1825 and 1900 parlors, etc.
and accurately furnished for each period, with family heirlooms.  More than a museum,
it's a beautiful, vivid picture of how our forefathers lived.

This home was built by a grandson of Capt. George Denison, on the site of the original
home which had burned.  Located in Stonington, CT., the home is called Pequotsepos Manor.
Pequotsepos in the language of the Pequot Indians, means "Post road of the Pequots".

Walter Palmer came to Stonington Conn in 1653, and located on lands that he had purchased of Governor Haynes. He subsequently received other grants of land from the town of Pequot, adjoining his first purchase. He erected his dwelling house on the east side of Wequetoquoc Cove, near the present residence of Thomas J Wheeler, Esq., on the site of the Old Slack House.

His lands were bounded on the west by Wequetequoc Cove, souith by the Bay, easterly by Thomas Stanton's grants, and north by the Chesebrough land, and lands given to Thomas Minor.

Walter Palmer came to this country from England, and reached Charleston, MA., in 1629. He brought with him his dau., Grace, whose mother died in England. He was sworn Freeman, may 18, 1631. Sometime before 1633, he m. Rebecca Short, and his new wife and Dau., Grace, joined the church in Charleston MA., June 1, 1633, where he continued to reside until 1642, when they removed to Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony. Here, he purchased and received large tracts of land, and was elected Deputy to the General Court of Plymouth in 1643 and 1647.

During his residence in Rehoboth, he held various offices, and enjoyed largely the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens. Mr Palmer died twelve years before the Frist Congregational Church of Stonington Conn., was formed, but having been one of the early settlers, and prominent in laying the foundation of the town and church, he has given this brief tribute of respect. Mr Palmer died in 1662, leaving a will which was probated in Boston MA.

Rev. John Gibbs Bible Record
(Son of Zach & Sarah Gibbs, brother to our Anne White)

Provided by: Martha Cummings

Only proof that our Anne was part of the Zach Gibbs family, listing her
Parents and siblings, a family treasure. None of the daughters husbands surnames
are mentioned, believe this record was written in 1843, but could be 1848, Elias and Anne left
Union Co 1845/46, to Redwater Bowie Co Texas.

Worthy to note, the
Barnet at the end of each Name, could it be the Sarah
remarried to a Barnett? I have not found a marriage record at this time.....

-

Notes:

The Rev. John Gibbs was a close neighbor of Elias White
in Union Co SC.  The Gibbs family has been documented
in books, such as the Southern Family Series, but is frought
with mistakes, even leaving out Zach and Sarah's three
oldest children, the daughters.  Until this bible record was
found, we had only the fact that the family lived next to
the Gibbs in SC, as proof, we now know for sure, Anne
was a member of this family, and the names and dates
of her parents and siblings.

Mrs. Cummings came upon the record via another source,
she was not at liberty to provide. The record is without a
fly or bible cover sheet, was discovered by a family in
Tennessee, going through old records, in an attic.  This
mystery may never be solved.  There must have been
more to this bible record, I am sure, because, we are
missing the Bible record portion that contains Rev John
Gibbs, family itself.

Anne Gibbs White's other brother, Churchwell Gibbs,
is the only other bible I know of, it is listed in the South
Carolina Bible records book, but contains only his immediate
family and mother.
