         Letcher Deeds of Edgefield, SC

        By Bob Campbell
"Here is a list of deeds that I have, I
will make comments on them and the list will be by book and page number,
from and to who, and date made--not date proven."

         Below
Number's: 4, 6 & 10 are linked to copies of the original deeds.

        1. Bk 10 pg 24-26, Issac Leferve and Malinda Leferve to John Talbert,
        7/26/1790.
This is a deed of Indenture for 25 pounds that allows John to use the
land Milly got by deed of gifts from Henry Key in 1776 a few months
before his death. I believe it says he has to keep the land in tact, but
can use it for most anything he wants until the end of Melinda's natural
        life.

        2. Bk 15 pg 165, Giles Letcher to John Hardy, 3/13/1798.
        No significance
except that it is 100 acres of James original land grant of 350 acres.

        3. Bk 28 pg 478-480, Giles Letcher to Nicholas Griffis, 6/17/1803.
 17
acres originally granted to Henry Key.

         4. Bk 29 pg 295-296, Giles Letcher & J. Cheatham to Jonathan Glanton,
12/13/1808. The only thing significant is that this deed has the dower
        rights signed by Agness Letcher.

        5. Bk 31 pg 543, Edmund & Tandy Leferve to Sterling Harrison,
        3/3/1814.
This is 2 of Milly's Leferve children selling their inherited
land to Sterling Harrison, son-in-law of John Talbert. Most of these
Leferve children's deeds mention no amount of land only their part. This
one is hard to read but starts with the land granted to Henry Key, etc.

         6. Bk 32 pg 45-46, Giles Letcher to John Talbert, 9/23/1806.
 This may be
your deed number 2. I sent this to  a lawyer and he agrees that
this deed gives the line from Henry Key to Giles Letcher as being a
descendant and heir of Milly Letcher.

        7. Bk 32 pg 58-59, Sterling Harrison to John Talbert, Sept. 1814.
 This
one is so hard to read that I am still working on it. It is a copy that
I made at the SC Archives last summer and is full of streaks and black
places. I am thinking of getting another copy from the Edgefield
Archives. I believe that all this deed will tell us is Milly and Isaac
        died before Sept. 1814.

        8. Bk 33 pg 156, Giles Letcher to John Camfield, 8/22/1805.
 Giles sells
409 acres, part of which was James original land grant, and is bounded
by land still owned by Giles.

        9. Bk 35 pg 125, Sterling Harrison to Agness Letcher, 2/3/1817.
 Agnes
bought 60 acres that was originally granted to Henry Key deceased
conveyed to his daughter Milla Letcher by deed of gifts to her and her
heirs lawfully begotten and born of her body and conveyed by her heirs
        to Sterling Harrison--rest unreadable.

         10. Bk 35 pg 449-452, Agness Letcher to Martin
        Burress, 11/11/1818.
Agnes sells the same 60 acres for a $100 profit. Line of descent is
given as, Part of a tract of land originally granted to Henry Key
deceased conveyed to his daughter Milla Letcher by deed of gifts to her
and her heirs Lawfully begotten and born of her body and conveyed by her
heirs to Sterling Harrison and from Sterling Harrison to Agness Letcher
and from Agness Letcher to Martin Burress. |
