Book Excerpt about Ann Bozeman Letcher's Family

Provided by:
Connie Bozeman (Descendant)

"I am working on my husband's Bozeman roots and I have a reprint of a very old Bozeman book, "Sketches of the Bozeman Family" by Rev.Joseph W Bozeman D. D. ,of Mississippi first printed in 1885 and reprinted by one of our relatives in Texas in 1981. Rev. Bozeman describes how he did his research by mail and visitation in this book...long before computers. Therefore I tend to trust it.

On Pages 31 and 32, he talks about Ann M. Bozeman as the fifth child of Nathan and Harriett Knotts Bozeman.

I quote, "A large fine looking lady, with coal black eyes and hair, a noble Christian woman, a devoted Baptist, with all the virtues of a model daughter, wife and mother, married John D. Letcher , and lived in Alabama, Coosa county, in comfortable circumstances, whre they raised a family of five sons and five daughters. All of these they saw baptised between the age of eleven and eighteen years, and never heard one of them use profane language, never saw one of them take a drink of whiskey, or a chew of tobacco. Noble children worthy of their worthy parents. Their children:

(1.) F. M. Letcher born about 1837, is a large tall man with very black hair and eyes. He studied medicine under his distinguised uncle, Dr. Nathan Bozeman in Montomery, Al, and in New Orleans, La. During the War, Dr. Letcher was a Surgeon in the Confederate Army. He afterwards married Mrs. Claudia C. Clanton, and located in Macon County, Ala, near Cross Keys, as a physician. His children are Frances Marion, Joseph Bozeman, Julian Billingslea, and James Metcalf (Letcher) Dr. Letcher is a man of note.

(2) Susannah Letcher, born aboaut 1839, married Dr. Chapman of Macon County, Al. They moved to Monroe County. She was a beautiful woman.

(3) Harriet Letcher born about 1841, married Mr. Davis, a gin manufacturer, and lives at Central Institute, Coosa County, Alabama. She is pure gold.

(4) Bettie Letcher, born about 1842, married Mr. King of Texas, and lived in Milam County..

(5) Nathan G. Letcher, born February 10, 1846, went out with the Wetumpka Light Guards, Capt. Reedy, 3rd Alabama Regiment, April, 1861, and served through the entire war, except when sick or wounded. He died of consumption in Texas, Feb. 8, 1881, a noble man, and an ornament to the Baptist church.

(6) Mattie Letcher married Andrew H. Pylant and lives in Milam County, Texas.

(7) John Letcher became a citizen of Texas and is prospering in the world.

(8) Dr Joseph Letcher, born Feb 1850 in AL.

(9) Lou Letcher married a Mr. Hughes, and lived in Montgomery, Al.

(10) Talbert Letcher was a graduate of the Alabama A. & M College at Auburn in 1881. He lost one forearm by a railroad accident, while a student. He is a very fine looking youg man, in every way an ornament to his family. Was Captain of Cadets in College. "

This is the total of what is printed of this family in the Bozeman book.

===============

I hope that you will copy and use it...Nathan Bozeman and M Harriet Knotts Bozeman Harrington are also listed on FAG. Will send you their links next. Their graves are photographd in Bethany cem. Thanks..."

Family Comments 2006:

From:  Howard Letcher

Sounds like we have finally been definitely confirmed as Letcher cousins--I
am very happy for all of you to finally prove up Stephen Tolbert Letcher but
I wish we could find out more about James and Giles and nobody in the
Letcher family has ever proved up Giles and Hannah Hughes beyond their entry
into America in approximately 1725 although I have always heard that the
Giles, Letcher, Hughes, Perkins, Paxton's, Stuart's, and Houston's all came
over together on the same conscripted ship from Northern Ireland where they
had removed during the Cromwellian period and had always had intermarriage
relationships where they lived for generations--the Letcher's sold their
estate to the Duke of Devonshire whose sister was married to Francis Leech
(Letcher).  I know that my grandmother always told me the Letcher brothers
of Giles (the original) were some of the largest men in the colonies with
hand spans almost twice the size of normal men.  This is easily born out by
my g-grandfather, Dr. Francis Marion Letcher, who was 6'9" along with his
brothers being the same height--his sister Elizabeth Letcher King, I think,
was almost 6'.

From:  Mike White

     First, want to thank Emily, for starting the project, our test subjects;
Howard and Neal Letcher, for their willingness to be tested.
And the late, Bob Campbell for his time and energy, as usual, in Organizing us all...

This is the first DNA test in my families, up to this point, I didn't think
much of the DNA testing, I am rethinking my thinking... was waiting for
these results to maybe pursue DNA testing down other questionable
branches.  Wow, this is great news, & the results a bit assuring.

To this point, in my mind, I was treating the South Carolina Letcher
connections, separately, from the Alabama Letcher's, I think this is a
major breakthrough, and can start uniting our connections with the
Edgefield SC Letcher's.

Bob, the years of research you have endured, has proven correct, and
that you were on the right track, for our AL, SC connections, great work..!

Note Nov 2013: From Mike White:
Well, here we are in 2013 soon to be 2014, the Science of Genetic
Genealogy, has steadily advanced since our 12 Marker Test, today
the 12 marker would not hold any weight by itself, it would say today,
"that Neal and Howard, only had a connection within the past 500
years"... thus, as of Nov/Dec 2013, we are retesting the DNA of Neal,
(diseased), and Howard, still living, FamilyTreeDNA saves the sample
for 25 years, and Neal has made us beneficiaries of his DNA, so, we have
ordered a new test up to the 67 Marker, and so has Howard Letcher
we expect results in December, and we are hoping that Neal and Howard
will also match perfectly, on the 25, 37, and 67 marker test.

Letcher 67 Marker DNA Project Now Complete

Purpose: To prove that Stephen Talbert & John David Letcher
were brothers, and the children of Giles & Agnes [Talbert] Letcher,
this may also help us connect to the SC Letcher's via the Talbert's.
SAR & DAR now accept DNA proof along with paper proof for those
wishing to join these organizations, in our situation on Stephen's side
of the family, this may be our only solid proof, as the connection be-
tween Agnes and Stephen cannot be verified, via the paper trail. The
12 marker test is to general, in today's DNA science, 67 shows a closer
Connection, there is a 111 marker test, but it may not be necessary.

Note from Cousin Bob: (6/12/2003)
in regard to the number of children
present in the household of Giles & Agnes;

"I think that this answers our questions about all the children listed with Giles and Agnes in the 1810 census in Edgefield, SC. Add our Stephen Tolbert and John D. Letcher and it takes care of all the boys, there appears to be one girl out of the proper age bracket but I can live with that. Lois is a Key family researcher that has helped me in the past and she is good.

Cousin Bob

Hi Bob,

I have been messing around trying to find where my William's children went after his death and his 2nd wife remarried. These children are by first wife. I am checking out other members of the family to see if they have excess in their households.

On the 1810 Edgefield census, John Key (I think he is Henry's John A.) is living next to William's, Gabriel Key....both are just married and show husband and wife only. Living next to Gabriel is Giles Letcher and Agnes Tolbert with a house full of kids but they only had one son, 6 yrs. by 1810 (that I know of). Do you know who all of the "extra's" are? I am looking for: Wm. Jr. 9yrs at 1810; Samuel 18; Sarah 12; Nancy 14; Martha 16. I have not been able to find Tandy Martin Key, either but know he must be living with someone...he is the oldest and does take guardianship of his siblings in 1809 but I can't find him. The children inherited land and Tandy, Gabriel & Samuel show up in deeds later. This family will drive one to unending frustration!

Wm.'s 2nd wife was Fanny Tolbert, sister of Agnes, that is why I thought perhaps some were farmed out to Agnes. Fanny has only her & Wm.'s child with new husband John Cheatham and their children on the 1810.

Henry Key, jr. who had administration of his brother Wm.'s estate has also died and left children with his 2nd wife, also a Tolbert."

Map of Land Patent Area:

History of Fluvanna County, VA

The area which is now Fluvanna County was once part of Henrico County, one of the original shires of the Virginia Colony. Henrico was divided in 1727 and the Fluvanna County area became a part of Goochland County. In 1744 Goochland was divided and the area presently known as Fluvanna became a part of Albemarle County. Finally, in 1777, Albemarle County was divided and Fluvanna County established. The County was named for the Fluvanna River, the name given to James River west of Columbia. Fluvanna means "Annie's River" in honor of Queen Anne of England.

From an initial 882 "tithables," the population reached 3,300 by 1782. Columbia was formed in 1788 with Bernardsburg and Wilmington following soon after. Lyles Baptist Church was organized in 1774 and the formation of the Methodist denomination had its roots in a Conference held in Fluvanna in 1779. The "Brick Union" Church was built in 1825 for the use of Episcopalians, Methodists, Baptists and Presbyterians. The village of Fork Union grew up around the Church.

When Palmyra was made the county seat in 1828 it quickly became a thriving town after the new courthouse was completed in 1830. While Palmyra has changed and modernized over the years, it still possesses an aura of tranquility.

The Rivanna Navigation Company was organized in 1805 to improve the Rivanna. Eventually a series of locks and dams were built from Columbia to Milton, five miles below Charlottesville. The James River and Kanawaha Canal, which was completed in 1840, ran along the James on Fluvanna's southern boundary. Both canals brought prosperity to the county until they were supplanted by the railroad in 1881. There were numerous successful gold mines located in the eastern half of the county during the 1830's.

Fluvanna was defended by six militia companies during the Revolution. The county was invaded by British forces in 1781 when the Point of Fork Arsenal was destroyed. While no Civil War battles were fought in Fluvanna, Union soldiers burned mills, bridges and damaged the James River canal.

""Would like to express our graditude and appreciation to cousin Bob for his untiring energy in pursing our South Carolina & Alabama Letcher connections.  At, his time and expense, has generously provided us with documents,  that in my mind, prove our connection to this Letcher line.  He as presented the materials in a way that one can see a Story unfold of a Pioneer Family, pursing their dreams of freedom and a better life, for their children.  We see and feel the agony of the War of Independence, and the ultimate sacrifice paid, by our James Letcher.   Giles Letcher may have lost his life in the War of 1812, for which he served, as no records, after this can be found, as is suggested by cousin Bob.  It was said he may have died or been killed by the indians on his way home from Alabama, in what would have been, preparation, for his families move to the New Frontier. Despite the odds of being a women, of the times, Agnes continued West with her family. This demonstrates the determination that made our Country, what it is today. One can only imagine what would have happened TO US ALL, had Agness decided not to make that journey west... ""
