News Note: 'Fellowship Church Burns Down:

Hi Cousins,
 
I just got a call from Charles Reedy telling me that Fellowship Church burned about 3 months ago. He went out and looked at it and it burned to the ground but there is no sign of the piano. They think that lightening hit it and this was before the recent rash of church burnings that we have had here in AL. Just thought you would like to know.

 Chleo A. (Norris) Letcher (1814-1900), is the mother of Sarah (Letcher) Smith.  Chleo (Chloe), wife of Stephen T Letcher. The Family Pictured above, with Chloe Letcher, is her Daughter Sarah (Letcher) Smith, her family & relatives.  George & Sarah's two sons, are pictured, Jeppie & Arthur Smith, with wives and children.  Jeppie's wife Ada, their son Arlan, also Arthur and wife Mary, and their two, Ernest & Murrel (Eva) Smith.  Folks, way in the back are unknown at this time.

My guess is, this picture was taken in 1900, Chleo died in December.

The Story of the Coat of Arms

The three (3) crowns represent three (3) kings and was given to the Leech (Letcher) family after they entertained the King of England and two prisoners, the King of Scotland, David II, and the King of France, John II (Surnamed Le Bon). When they left, the King of England told the Leech family that they had been so well entertained that they could use three crowns for a Coat of Arms.

 The Letcher coat of arms hereby illustrated 
is officially documented in Rietstap's Armorial General. 
The original description of the arms (shield) is as follows:

"De Gu., A Deux Fers-De-Moulin Accostes D'Arg."

When translated the Blazon also describes the 
original colors of the Letcher Arms as:

"Red; two silver mill-rinds placed side-by-side."

Above the shield and helmet is the crest which is described as:

"Two antique wings charged as the arms of the shield."
