Descendants of
JOSEPH MARTIN PARDUE
Generation No. 1
1. JOSEPH MARTIN5 PARDUE (JOSEPH4, JOSEPH3, JOHN2, JOHN1
PARDOE/PARDUE) was born August 21, 1798 in NORTH CAROLINA,
and died November 26, 1868 in ALABAMA. He married ELIZABETH
CORDRAY May 02, 1826 in SOUTH CAROLINA. She was born May 19,
1811 in SOUTH CAROLINA, and died August 03, 1881 in
PERRYVILLE AL..
Notes for JOSEPH MARTIN PARDUE:
Joseph Martin Pardue
&
Elizabeth Cordray Pardue
Anyone who has done any family history (genealogy)
research will relate to the joy of our finding the Bible
that belonged to Elizabeth Cordray Pardue. It has been
passed down through the family and is now in the possession
of one of her great grandsons, Orin Carroll, of
Plantersville, Alabama.
The first time I was able to see this Bible, I found it to
be full of treasures. All the births, marriages and death
dates for Joseph , Elizabeth and their children were there.
There were also some grandchildren’s death dates. There were
a few pictures inside and a poem written by one of their
sons, James D. Pardue, just before his departing to fight in
the War between the States.
Elizabeth had carded the wool to make the cover for the
Bible and when the "Yankee’s" were coming through Selma and
the area, she hid this prized book in a hollow log. The
Bible got wet while in the log and the inside cover, back
and front, are "skewbald". This is the term Orin Carroll
uses to describe the water markings.
The son of Joseph and Nancy Key Pardue of Chester, South
Carolina, Joseph, his wife and first three sons migrated to
Alabama in 1834. According to Elizabeth’s Bible, they
arrived in what was then Perry County, Alabama on December
24, 1834. Their oldest son, George Washington Pardue was
born in 1827; Thomas C. Pardue, the second son, was born in
1829; and Joseph Marion Pardue youngest at the time of their
migration, was born in 1833.
Joseph had a land grant of 80 acres in what is now Grist
State Park. In fact, the property where this family lived
and farmed is now under water. A lake in the park now covers
where they settled in Alabama.
Over the next sixteen years, the couple had five more sons
and two daughters. The first of their children born in
Alabama was John M. Pardue, born February of 1836. Next came
two daughters, Mary born in 1838 and Caroline born in 1841.
Of the next four sons, only two lived to maturity. They were
James D. , born 1843 and Jefferson Franklin, born 1850. A
son named William born in 1845, died 1847 and a son Andrew
J. born 1847, died 1863. I am descended from George W.
Pardue, the oldest child of this family. He married Margaret
Jane Bell on December 16, 1846 and purchased land in what
was Perryville, Alabama. Thomas C. Pardue married first Mary
Bell (sister of Margaret Jane) on December 30, 1850. After
her death, he married Isabelle Barnes Campbell. Joseph
Marion Pardue married Emily Apperson and migrated to Milam,
Texas. John M. Pardue married Fannie Apperson on September
2, 1858. This family migrated to Booneville, Mississippi.
Mary Pardue married James Cook on September 15, 1858. The
settled in the Plantersville area of what is now Dallas
County, Alabama. Caroline
Pardue married William Walker on August 24, 1865. She died
shortly after giving birth to a baby girl. Her sister, Mary
Cook, took the child, Myrtle, and reared her. James D.
Pardue married Lenora Shelby on December 9, 1866. They
settled in the Summerfield area of what is now Dallas
County.
Jefferson Franklin Pardue married Paralee Letcher on May 27,
1872. In the latter part of the 1870’s, Jefferson Franklin
and family migrated to Maud, Texas.
We have been able to reconnect with members of several of
these families. Ann Hall, of Dallas, Texas, is descended
from Jefferson Franklin. We know that Joseph Marion had
several children, and last known location for them was in
Texas. Although we found the grave in Booneville,
Mississippi of John M. and his wife, we have had no luck in
finding any of their descendants.
The remaining Pardue’s in the Dallas County area are
descended from James D. Pardue and Lenora Shelby. There are
descendants of Thomas C. Pardue’s daughters (he had four)
who still live in Selma, Alabama. Many of these have been
most helpful in reconnecting these families.
Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Cemetery is the final
resting place for many members of Joseph and Elizabeth
Pardue’s family. Although there is no marker, I feel that
Joseph and Elizabeth are buried there. Many graves have
markers, but there are probably a goodly number that are not
marked. This cemetery is in a quiet area and it is most
pleasant to be able to go back there and know that these
people lying there were instrumental in helping to settle
Perry County.
Most were simple farmers, but from these families came
business men, bankers, artists, soldiers, architects,
teachers, doctors, and yes even a few genealogists.Sources:

Notes for THOMAS C. PARDUE:
THOMAS C. PARDUE
When Joseph M. and his wife Elizabeth Pardue reached their
destination in Perry Co., Al., in
December of 1834, their second son, Thomas, was only 5 years
old. He was born in Chester, S.C.
He grew up on his fathers farm near Plantersville.
May 23, 1851, Thomas married Mary Bell. She was a sister to
Margaret Jane Bell Pardue who had
already married Thomas’ older brother George.
This marriage was blessed with the birth of four daughters.
1) Elizabeth born October 22, 1851, who married William Bell
Their children were: Ida

Walter Leon
When "the War" began in 1862, Thomas joined the Company "A"
of the 20th Alabama Infantry.
Three of his brothers, John M., Joseph Marion and James D.,
also joined the same company. During the
battle of Vicksburg, all four of these brothers were
captured. They were paroled after signing a statement
that they would "not take up arms against the United States"
again. As many soldiers did, Thomas
rejoined his company and again took up the fight. While
fighting at Cassville, Georgia, on May 20, 1864,
Thomas was again captured. This time there were no paroles
being given and Thomas was sent
North to Rock Island Prison in Illinois.
There are conflicting reports as to the conditions at Rock
Island. In documents at the Archives in
Montgomery, Al., one soldier described the conditions as
comfortable with enough food and water and
clothing. Other documents show that soldiers had to sign an
oath of allegiance to the United States
in order to be transferred to this part of the prison. The
other area where soldiers who would not sign
this oath remained. They were "kept on starvation rations
and are often reduced to rats, dogs, putrid meat
and other repulsive food". For understandable reasons,
Thomas signed the oath.
When "the War" was over, and he was released, Thomas
returned to Alabama and his family.
In 1866, Mary died leaving four small daughters for Thomas
to raise. Although his in-laws, Mary’s
parents lived close by, it must have been a difficult time.
From census records we find that the oldest
daughter, Elizabeth, lived with Meary Johnson, keeping house
for her.
December 23, 1874, Thomas remarried to Isabella Barnes
Campbell, who was also a widow.
Isabella had first married William Campbell and had three
sons.
1) Alexander
2) Walter who married Josephine Pardue (dau. of Thomas)
3) Morgan who married Emily Barnes
Thomas and Isabella lived in an area known as Pearidge. They
had a small farm where in 1880
the Agricultural and Manufacturing census recorded they
owned 40 acres valued at $535.00.
They had 1 horse, 2 mules, 3 cows, 22 poultry, 4 swine and 3
calves valued at $400.00. Produce
raised that year was corn, oats, peas and beans, Irish
potatoes and eggs. They also produced 3 bales
of cotton at 400 pounds each.
On October 29, 1900, Thomas died. We have found no record of
where he was buried. Isabella
filed to receive his pension in 1908. Her request was denied
on March 18, 1914, because of
the oath that Thomas signed while in Rock Island
Prison.Written by: Frances Hulsey Pardue

ALABAMA. She married JAMES J. COOK September 10, 1858 in
PERRY COUNTY, AL.
Notes for JAMES J. COOK:
The Cook Family of Perry County Alabama
The 1800 census of North Carolina lists Martin and Jacob
Cook in Wayne County, North Carolina.
Because there is no will to confirm a father son
relationship, we can only speculate that Martin and Jacob’s
father was Jacob, Sr. Martin sold land to Jacob, Jr. that
was granted to Jacob Cook, Sr. and Postum
Cook. Because of the wording of this deed, it seems to be a
memorial and the notation of Senior was
used in the deed.
Martin Cook moved To Green County, Alabama. We only have his
wife’s first name as Elizabeth and
a marriage date of 1802 in South Carolina. Martin and
Elizabeth had three children. Andrew , born 1805,
married Mary Crockett ,1832 in Green County, Alabama. Henry,
born 1806, married Elizabeth
Richardson, 1842 in Green County, Alabama. Martin, Jr., born
1810, married 1st Polly Crockett on March
19, 1831 in Green County, Alabama. After the death of Polly
(Harriet) on June 27, 1848, Martin
married Irene Horne in 1849 in Perry County, Alabama. These
Cook families lived near Liberty Church, which was near the
Green and Perry County line in the
1840’s. This region became part of Hale County in 1867.
Martin, Jr. and Polly had eight children: Frances, born
January 17, 1831, Argean Elizabeth , born
November 15, 1833, Jacob Martin, born August 31, 1835, Mary
Smatha, born April 22, 1837, James (Jim)
B. Cook, born March 2, 1837, Harriett Amanda, born 1841,
Elizabeth, born December 23, 1843, and
Andrew Thomas, born June 27, 1848. Because the date of
Andrew Thomas birth and his mother, Polly’s,
death dates are the same, I feel she must have died from
complications during child birth. The fifth child of this
family, James, married Mary A. Pardue. Mary was the daughter
of Joseph
Martin and Elizabeth Cordrey Pardue, also of Perry County.
James and Mary were married on
September 10, 1858 in Perry County. They had one daughter,
Luezar, who died in infancy. She is
buried at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Cemetery, in
Dallas County. Mary had one sister, Caroline, who married
William Walker. Caroline and William had one daughter,
Myrtle. Shortly after Myrtle’s birth Caroline died. The
family tell that Caroline knew she was dying and
asked her sister, Mary, to care for her child. Mary and
James took Myrtle and raised her as their own.
According to records at the Archives in Montgomery, Alabama,
James was a Justice of the Peace
in the community of Plantersville, Alabama. According to the
obituary in the Selma Times Journal, he died
on September 18, 1919 after a lengthy illness. His service
was conducted by the Reverend D.P. Taylor of
the Christian church. He was a Confederate Veteran. Mary
lived in Selma, Alabama with Myrtle until on March 22, 1926,
Mary died after a brief illness.
Mary and James are buried at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian
Church Cemetery, not far from their daughter,
Luezar. In the home in Plantersville of Orin Carroll, one of
Mary’s nephews, sits the rocking chair that Aunt
Mary used to sit and rock cousin Myrtle when she was a baby.
The same chair is in the picture above
this article.

SHELBY, daughter of JOHN SHELBY and MARY A. She died 1882.
Notes for JAMES D. PARDUE:
JAMES D. PARDUEOn March 12, 1843 James Pardue
was born, the 7th of ten children born to Joseph Martin
Pardue and Elizabeth Cordray Pardue. The family lived in the
Plantersville area of Perry County.
A family bible that belonged to Elizabeth has been a
tremendous help in giving dates and names
relating to this and other Pardue families. This Bible gives
the date of James marriage to Lenora
Shelby as December 9, 1866. Since finding the date in this
Bible, we have located a copy of their
marriage record in Perry Co. probate office.
James and Lenora’s story is a sad one. After the birth of
their two sons, Morgan born 1869 and
Joseph Shelby born 1879, James died. No one in the family
knows the cause of James death.
When Joseph was still a small boy he witnessed the death of
his brother, Morgan, from suffocation
in a sawdust pile. After James death, Lenora moved in with
her sister Alice Shelby Melson and her
husband John, in the Plantersville area. The family tells
that Lenora committed suicide by hanging
herself sometime after 1880. Joseph Shelby was then raised
by his aunt and uncle John and Alice
Melson.
On February 14, 1893 Joseph applied for a marriage license
in Dallas County. The Rev. J.W. Shores
performed the ceremony on February 16, 1893 at Bethel
Church, uniting Joseph in marriage to Louvinia
Callie Sanderson, daughter of Henry Sanderson. This couple
had eleven children.
1) Morgan born 1895
2) F.O. born 1897
3) Juanita born 1899
4) Henry Madison born 1901
5) Lydia born 1903
6) Clyde born 1905
7) Joseph Bruce born 1909
8) Bertha born 1910
9) Ralph Howard
10) Rufus Shelby
11) Stella
Rufus Shelby was killed in an accidental shooting while out
hunting with his brothers. He was crossing
a fence when the gun he was carrying discharged and killed
him.
Any descendent of Joseph Martin Pardue and Elizabeth Cordray
Pardue still living in Selma, Dallas
County, Alabama, are descended from the family of Joseph
Shelby Pardue.
Several of these children and their parents are buried at
Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church
Cemetery. In fact most of the people buried at Mount
Pleasant are in some way related to this
family.

But mark me, there’s no fear love
For in Heaven is our trust
And if the heavy drooping tear
Swells in my mournful eye,
It is the Northmen of our land
Should cause the battle cry Then weep not, dearest, weep not
If in her cause I fall
Oh, weep not dearest, weep not
It is my Country’s Call.
Our rights have been usurped dear,
By Northmen of our land
Fanaticks raised the cry, dear
Politicians fired the brand,
The Southerns spurn the galling yoke
The Tyrants threats defy,
They find we’re sons like sturdy oak,
To raise the battle cry Then weep not, dearest, weep not
If in her cause I fall
Oh, weep not dearest, weep not
It is my Country’s Call.I know you’ll let me go pet
I saw it in that tear
To join the gallant men, pet
Who never yet knew fear
With Beaureguard and Davis
We’ll gain our cause or die
With Battles like Manasses
And raise the battle cry Then weep not, dearest, weep not
If in her cause I fall
Oh, weep not dearest, weep not
It is my Country’s Call.

10. JAMES JOSEPH YOUNG7 PARDUE (GEORGE WASHINGTON6, JOSEPH
MARTIN5, JOSEPH4, JOSEPH3, JOHN2, JOHN1 PARDOE/PARDUE)
was born March 07, 1848 in ALABAMA, and died March 29, 1900
in BIRMINGHAM, AL.. He married (1) MOLLY STONE in
HEIDLEBURG, MS.. She was born Abt. 1852 in Alabama, and died
Aft. 1878 in HEIDLEBURG, MS.. He married (2) CATHRINE CARRIE
ROWELL in HEIDLEBURG, MS., daughter of TILLMAN ROWELL and
JANE BOLTON. She was born January 12, 1861 in MOBILE, and
died April 06, 1939 in BIRMINGHAM, AL. Notes for JAMES
JOSEPH YOUNG PARDUE:
On March 7, 1848, James was the first child born to George
and Jane Bell Pardue. He grew up
in a small town called Perryville in Perry Co., Alabama. His
father had a large farm plus one of
the towns general stores, so there was much that a young boy
could do to help his father if not
with farming surely there were chores at the store that a
young boy could help with.
At the age of 21, on November, 29, 1869, James married
Mollie R. Stone. Their first two
children, George and Rebecca both died in infancy. Their
third child, James Elgin was
born on July 31, 1878. Shortly after the birth of James
Elgin, the young couple moved to
Heidleburg, Mississippi, where James worked for the
railroad. Somewhere between
August 1878 and late 1879, Mollie died and is buried
somewhere in Heidleburg.
The story is told by family members that a young girl of 18
was visiting with her brother,
Russell Rowell who lived near James. Needing someone to care
for his child, James
asked Catherine Caroline Rowell to help look after his
child. Before long, James and
Carrie, as she was called, were married.
They had 10 children.
1) Joseph Delgan born July 21, 1880 & died Aug, 1886
2) Jane Mozell born July 1882 & died 1883
3) Sidney Cordrey born September 24, 1884
4)
Evan Norman born
March 15, 1886
5)
Oscar Julius born July 6, 1889
6) Luther Jorman born June 5, 1891
7) Ida Florence born January 12, 1893
8) Agnes Alzada born March 11, 1895
9) Julia Catherine born February 17, 1898
10) James Isadore born September 17, 1900
In 1887 James work with the railroad as a wheelwright
brought him and his family to
Birmingham, Alabama. They lived happily in a large home on
the north side of Birmingham
until the loss of one of his legs in an on the job accident,
forced a change in his job with the
railroad. After the loss of his leg he had to work as a flag
man. Ever the faithful laborer he
continued to work in the early spring of 1900 even though he
was sick with the flu. His flu
turned to pneumonia and on March 29, 1900 he died leaving
Carrie with 8 children and
expecting their 9th .
When Joseph died, Carrie moved to Mobile, Alabama to be near
her sisters and their family.
While there, James Isadore was born. Around 1903, Carrie
moved her family back to
Birmingham.
(Carrie is pictured below in middle, with daughter Agnes,
and second husband, William Gray.)
With the help of her older boys, she was able to provide for
her children.
She remarried to a man named William Gray. Strangely Mr.
Gray had also lost a leg at
sometime before their marriage. They moved to Rocky Ridge a
beautiful area near
Birmingham.
Carrie’s son
Oscar,
had a dairy
and Carrie and Mr. Gray lived near him.
A daughter of Oscar now owns the home where Carrie once
lived. The area has
changed but it is still beautiful and there are still a few
Pardue descendants living
around Rocky Ridge with memories of Grandma Gray (as they
knew her). They
tell of how she played games with her grandchildren.
A favorite story that is told is about the Pardue boys,
Carrie’s sons. It seems she left them at
home and went to town. They had chickens, as many folks did
back then, and they were let run
free in the yard. When Carrie came home, the boys had
plucked all the feathers off the chickens.
It must have been a strange sight that greeted Carrie.

died January 06, 1940 in 1ST AVE HOME IN SELMA, AL.. She

July 06, 1875 in PERRY CO.. He was born 1849, and died July

JOSEPHINE PARDUE:
The second daughter born to George Washington Pardue and
wife Margaret Jane Bell Pardue,
was America Josephine ( or Josie as she was called). She was
born on March 2, 1859 in
Summerfield, Perry County, Alabama. On July 6, 1875 she
married William T. Wallis. William
had first married Josephine’s sister Miranda on March 2,
1873, but Miranda died between 1873 and 1875.
Josephine and William had five children:
1) Alma born 1876 who married John M. Seymour
Their children were: Josephine L. Seymour, Annabell Seymour,
Wallis A. Seymour,
Alma Seymour, Mary E. Seymour and John M. Seymour, Jr.
2) Ada who married James A. Moore April 8, 1903, and had one
daughter, Elizabeth
3) Oscar who was born 1879
4) Edgar who was born October 1, 1880 and married Mattie
Wood January 30, 1902
5) Otis who was born 1883
The family lived on First Avenue in Selma and William worked
as a merchant. The house
where they lived still stands and close by is the last known
home of Josephine’s mother,
Margaret Jane Bell Pardue. The couple owned property in
Selma and sold one lot on
Jefferson Avenue to a congregation for a church.
Following a stroke of paralysis on Friday, July 6, 1917,
William died in his home. His funeral
was held at his home in Selma on July 10, 1917 at 10:00 a.m.
and he is buried in Old Live Oak
Cemetery.
In 1921, Josephine moved to Atlanta, Georgia following her
marriage to George Chappelle.
She lived there for seven years, until the death of her
husband . She moved back to Selma in
1928 and again lived on First Avenue.
She loved to write poems for her own pleasure and she penned
many charming verses
which received special recognition,. One of these, "Alabama"
was included in an anthology of
poetry which was exhibited at the World’s Fair of 1939 in
New York City.
On January 6, 1940, Josephine, at the age of 80, passed away
at her home. Her obituary in the
Selma Times Journal reads: Possessed of an alert and gay
spirit which was not overshadowed by
advancing years, Mrs. Chappelle was active up to the time of
her final days and her sudden
passing is a loss to the many who enjoyed her acquaintance
and friendship." She was a member
of the Christian Science Church. Her funeral was held in the
chapel of Breslin Funeral Home with
burial in Old Live Oak Cemetery. She is buried between her
first husband William Wallis and her
son Otis C. Wallis.
Aunt Josie, as she was known to the family, visited her
family that had moved to Birmingham,
often. They have special memories of these visits from her
and taking trips to Selma to see her
and her family.

24. JAMES ELGIN8 PARDUE (JAMES JOSEPH YOUNG7, GEORGE
WASHINGTON6, JOSEPH MARTIN5, JOSEPH4, JOSEPH3, JOHN2, JOHN1
PARDOE/PARDUE) was born July 31, 1878 in HEIDLEBURG, MS.,
and died August 31, 1930 in FT. SUMNER, N.MEXICO. He married
IDA BOYD July 23, 1908 in WAGGONER, OKLAHOMA. She was born
January 13, 1885 in AVON, MO., and died September 11, 1977
in WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS. Notes for JAMES ELGIN PARDUE:
"Go west young man, go west" came alive when James Elgin
Pardue, son of James
Joseph Young and Molly Stone Pardue, left Birmingham,
Alabama.
James Elgin was born in Mississippi, July 31, 1880. His
mother died when he was two
years old. During his mother’s illness, he was cared for by
a young girl, Catherine Caroline
Rowell. After Molly’s death, Elgin still had to be cared for
and so his father married Caroline.
This family moved to Birmingham in the late 1800’s and after
finishing school he went for a
while towhat is now Birmingham Southern College. It was told
that he was studying for the
ministry in the Methodist Church. There was something in the
Methodist religion that he did
not believe and he definitely never, but never, said
anything that he did not believe.
At 21 he inherited a trust fund established by his mother, a
descendent of Thomas Stone,
a signer of the Declaration of Independence. About this time
his father died and he gave
his inheritance to his step-mother to help raise his ten
step-brothers and sisters.
Around 1903 he headed west aboard the Sante Fe Train and
went as far as the tracks
were built-Sunnyside, Territory of new Mexico. His first
venture was a restaurant. It was
said that he could cook a steak better than anyone.
About 1807 he established a large mercantile business in
partnership with a Mr. Katz.
It served the community well, and even included a doctors
office. The town of Sunnyside
incorporated and changed its name to Fort Sumner. Elgin
framed the town ordinances and
was elected the first mayor on a "clean up ticket." He
issued an ultimatum giving three days
for gamblers, bootleggers and prostitutes to leave town. One
day in the blacksmith shop a
gambler called Elgin’s bluff with a gun. Elgin grabbed a
hammer and chased him around the
block. Once he defended a payroll with a buggy whip against
three masked gunmen. Although
small in stature he was strong of character with firm
convictions and he never backed down.
On July 23, 1909, Elgin married Ida Boyd in Waggoner,
Oklahoma. While Ida was in
Oklahoma preparing for the wedding, a tornado destroyed the
Pardue-Katz Store.
Times were hard after the loss of the store. Elgin sold real
estate in Melrose for awhile
and then started the Clovis Daily Journal, later taking in
T.J. Mabry as a partner.
He sold the paper to Mabry and attended law school at
Washburn University in Topeka,
Kansas, teaching Greek and Latin to earn his way.
After he received his law degree, Elgin and Ida came home to
Fort Sumner. He became
an exceptional lawyer, and worked just as diligently for a
poor client as he would for anyone
with money to pay his fees. Always active in civic affairs
and politics, he kept abreast of what
was going on locally, state-wide and nationally. In 1913, he
was elected to the House of
Representatives in New Mexico and in 1916 he was Democratic
Leader of the House.
There were five children born to Elgin and Ida.
1) Nicholas Elgin born 1909 who married Naomi McGann
2) James Aaron born 1910 who 1st married Jo Garrison, 2nd
Dorothy Woodward
3) Ida Mary Margaret born 1913 who married John O’Brien
Joerns
4) Joseph Oscar born 1917 who married Colinne J. King
5) Anna Mae born 1918 died 1918
Sometime in the 1920’s Elgin developed cancer in his left
thigh. A few years later, it returned
under the knee cap. On August 31, 1930, he died in Clovis,
New Mexico at the age of 50. All city
businesses were closed for the largest funeral the
old-timers had ever seen. An excerpt from
his obituary in the Fort Sumner Leader states "Probably no
other man took such a leading part
in the affairs of the town and county, both in civic affairs
and in politics. Besides framing many
of the first ordinances for the town he was responsible for
cleaning up on the bootlegger
element which operated her after local option went into
effect."
Although he kept in touch with his family in Alabama, he was
never able to come back for a
visit. Two of his brothers were planning a trip west for a
visit when news of his death reached
Alabama.
Many cousins had heard stories of Elgin and his trip west,
but until a Pardue Family Reunion
in 1989 when his daughter Margaret attended, his life was a
mystery. With Margaret’s help,
Elgin’s family again found their roots in Alabama.

Notes for JAMES AARON PARDUE:
A Memorial Tribute to James A. Pardue
Our dear father died March 21, 1997. It seemed
appropriate that he would die on the first day
of Spring. He love to garden and spring flowers were
among his favorite plants. He loved red
tulips and red geraniums, and red gladolias, and even
red tomatoes. He loved plants and he
loved the color red.
As our Dad's health dereriated, he became dependent on
his electric scooter. Dad was
incredibly resourceful. He could invent gadgets to fix
any problem. For several years, he
continued to garden from the seat of his scooter. He had
built a little trailer to carry his rakes
and shovels around the yard. Dad was considered
resourceful even by others who experienced
the depression years. He often would darn his own socks
by pulling them over a light bulb and
then sewing up the hole.
In contrast to his trhifty nature, Dad was always a
generous host. He was quick to offer his
guests a piece of watermelon or a bowl of ice cream.
They soon learned that Dad was a practical
joker and food was often involved in his exploits.
Perhaps you would be unlucky enough to be
invited over for pancakes and cowboy coffee. Good luck
chewing those pancakes. The coffee
was expecially tasty. Dad would take off one of his
dirty socks and fill it with some coffee grounds
and then throw it in a pot of boiling water. Dad always
had a brand new sock tucked in his pocked
already filled with fresh coffee. He would switch the
tow socks before throwing the good one in
the pot. He always had a "straight face" and his guests
rarely said a word, I guess they figured
that the boiling water would remedy the problem.
Dad was a hard worker and a good business partner. He
had been a cement contractor for
most of his life and he took great pride in his work. He
thrived for the joy of working. It gave
him a great sense of accomplishment.
Besides having a strong work ethic, Dad was a very
honest man. He once stopped at a gas
station close to our house. When he arrived home, he
realized that the attendant had given
him too much money in change, he then walked back to the
station to return the nickel.
Dad was also a good storyteller. His bollo tie would
swing as he acted out his tall tales.
Dad loved to go arrowhead hunting and he enjoyed
collecting American Indian artifacts. He
once found some pieces of bone, perhaps used on a
necklace. He placed them into a small
container and as he quit for the day, he had an
encounter with a rattle snake. As he raced
down the trail, his container fell open and he could
hear his old bones rattling down the trail
behind him.
These are just a few fond memories we wished to share
with you. We loved our father
and we will miss him greatly.

PARDOE/PARDUE) was born June 05, 1891 in BIRMINGHAM, AL.,
and died June 19, 1959 in BIRMINGHAM, AL.. He married MINNIE
OLA WIDEMAN December 17, 1920 in BIRMINGHAM, AL., daughter
of AB WIDEMAN and IDA GOTHARD. She was born December 17,
1905 in ALABAMA, and died August 11, 1990 in BESSEMER
CARRAWAY HOSP.. Notes for LUTHER JORMAN PARDUE:
Luther Jorman Pardue was born on June 5, 1891 in Birmingham,
Alabama. He was the sixth
child born to James Joseph and Carrie Rowell Pardue. When he
was about 9 years old, his
father died of typhoid pneumonia. Although he did attend
school through the third grade, the
loss of his father made it necessary for him to quit school
and go to work to help support the
family. The first job we know that he had was as water boy
for some company in Birmingham,
Alabama. He held a series of jobs as a laborer and in 1910
he lived in Mobile. Here he worked
in a dairy as a milkman. At one time he also lived in New
Orleans which is where he enlisted
in the U. S. Cavalry in 1917 serving in the Quarter Master
Corps at Camp Pike near Little Rock,
Arkansas.
The story was told that he and some fellow soldiers decided
to do some cave exploring in a
cave they found. While in the new cave, he and the other men
became lost and it took three
days to find their way out. When they did get out, they were
on the other side of the mountain
several miles from where they went in.
Because of the conditions he served under while in the Army,
his health was damaged and
he suffered the remainder of his life with emphysema and
asthma. During his time of service
he had pneumonia, scarlet fever, malaria and heat stroke. In
1919 he received an honorable
discharge from the Army and came home to Alabama.
He went to work for his older brother, Oscar Julius Pardue,
in his dairy. It was while
rounding up stray cows for milking that he met his future
wife, Minnie Ola Wideman.
She was only 15 when they married on December 17, 1920, her
birthday.
In the early part of 1920, he owned his own dairy in Sulphur
Springs, Alabama, near
what is now Hoover, Alabama. When the depression came they
lost the dairy and he went
back to work for Oscar.
Luther and Minnie had 9 children.
1) Minnie Alzeda
2) Lois Madeline
3) Doris Lucille
4) Luther Julius
5) Carlis Tillman
6) Mary Kate
7) Ola Mae
8) James Donald
9) Ester Carolyn
In the spring of 1936, Luther moved his family to Tuscaloosa
Co., Alabama, near Tannehill
State Park, where he purchased land from his brother, Evan
Norman Pardue. Because of his
deteriorating health, he was not able to work a regular job
so he did what he could to support
and feed his family. From truck farming, to sawmill and
timber cutting, he managed to provide
for his family.
In the early 1940’s he began preaching, and would preach
anywhere invited from churches,
to homes to brusharbors.
As the years passed, his health always gave him problems. In
the 1950’s he spent a lot of
time in the Veterans Hospital in Birmingham. On June 19,
1958, he lost his fight and died at the
age of 67.
The family have many good memories of their father and
grandfather. They remember his
love for practical jokes and his sense of humor. He is
buried at Cahaba Heights Baptist Church
Cemetery and in August of 1990, his wife, Minnie was buried
beside him.

Notes for LUTHER JULIUS PARDUE:
Luther Julius Pardue Born May 19, 1927, the first son of
Luther Jorman and Minnie Ola Wideman Pardue, Julius, as
he was to be called by some, Buddy by others, had to
grow up quickly. His father’s bad health and the bad
economy of the early 1930’s made it necessary for him to
begin at a very early age to help support the family.
From logging work in the Irondale area to helping his
father with the farm, he learned what hard work was.
In 1934, the family moved from Birmingham, Alabama
(Rocky Ridge Road area), to
the Bucksville area of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.
While attending Abernant Elementary School, he was
wrestling with a classmate. They were just playing
around, but Julius broke the other boy’s leg. Because of
hard times, he was only able to attend school through
the third grade. Through work, he learned much. When
doing carpenter work, he is able to picture in his mind
what the project will be and there aren’t many better at
figuring out a bill of lumber for any building project.
Julius’ father was a preacher, and held many a brush
arbor meeting in the Abernant to Brookwood areas. While
visiting in Brookwood, Julius met his future wife, Janie
Lou Jennings. Her grandfather had been a preacher and
she was the oldest of six children born to C. N. and
Dessie Jennings. They were married on August 30, 1947 in
the home of Rev. J. E. Johnson of McCalla. Julius sold
his Indian motorcycle to buy the household goods he and
his wife would need to set up housekeeping.
At this time, he was working at U. S. Pipe in Bessemer,
Alabama. He rode the bus to work every day. He worked
for them until 1979 when, in and accident, he injured
his back, making it impossible to continue working.
On August 19, 1948, the couple had their first child, a
son they named Luther Juliun Pardue. A second child,
Janie Mae, was born on October 18, 1949. By this time
they had moved to the Bucksville area that is now
Lakeview, just across the highway from his parents. On
August 23, 1957, their last child, Steve Allen, was
born.
Although times were hard sometimes for the family, they
worked together to build a home and always tried to help
their children prepare for a better life than they had
known growing up in the Depression.
There are many family stories that have been told and
retold but one of my favorite is the one "Pop" tell of
his trip to the Rock Stand, a hang out that was about a
mile from their home. He was about 15 or 16 and his
mother, Minnie, had told him not to go down there. Well,
that was just what he had to do. By going somewhere he
wasn’t supposed to, he was anxious to get home before it
got too late. As he started for home, he thought he
heard someone following him. Back then this was very
much out in the country and was usually very quiet. This
added to his worry that someone was following him. He
continued to walk several more feet, and then stopped
and listened for any sound that might mean he was being
followed. After doing this several more
times, he decided to try to out run whoever was
following him. After running for about half a mile he
still could hear and see (he thought) someone following
and finally decided to face whoever it was and take his
chances. He stopped running and turned to fight whoever
this persistent follower was only to see that it was his
shadow. We never tire of hearing this story, and it
grows in drama with each telling.
He loves to pull practical jokes. We have been told
stories about some of the pranks his father Luther
Jorman pulled and this seems to be a trait that has been
passed down from father to son, to grandson and even to
Luther Jorman’s great grandson. While we were building
our house, a girlfriend of mine came over to see how the
work was going. As she and I walked through the house,
Julius was jacking up the rear of her car. He put a
concrete blocks under the axles of the rear wheels,
leaving the tires only _ of an inch off the ground. When
she got ready to leave, we were standing upstairs
looking out the window. She tried to back up, but the
car wouldn’t move. He wouldn’t let me call out to her
and warn her. Finally, he went down
and fixed her car. She and I laughed about what he did,
but for a few minutes, she really thought that something
was wrong with her car.
Since I married his son, Luther Juliun, in 1969, I have
been on the receiving end of many of his jokes. All are
in good fun, and I have even learned to get even a
little from time to time.
When our son was born in October of 1971, we decided to
carry on the tradition of naming him Luther with a
middle name that started with J. He is Luther Jeffery,
the fourth L. J. Pardue in the family. We have a
daughter, Dana Elaine, who was born in 1977.
Janie Mae married Jerry Chance in August of 1970. They
have no children, but have helped spoil ours. Steve
married Susi Hall and they had two children, a daughter,
Stevi, and a son, Shane.
Julius and Janie Lou celebrated their 50th Wedding
Anniversary, August 30, 1997. There were many friends
who shared the special day. Julius and Janie Lou still
live on the land that his father bought back in 1934.
They are happy there. Their children and grandchildren
are close at hand. And summer evenings it is nice to
just sit out on their front porch, listen to the night
sounds and share some of the stories once again.
