NOTES:
The discovery, by Cousn Bob, of Giles Letcher's war of
1812 records, dispels the theory, that Giles died in this
conflict. Family lore had it, that Giles was killed on his
return from Alabama, by the indians, after surveying land
he intended to
move his family to, from South Carolina. Cousin
Bob, was not able to find a Filing for a Pension for Giles, presently, is
assumed he never filed one. --------------------------------------------------------- Cousin,
Bob received the following response on Capt. John Key, listed on Giles
records above:
This John Key was John Alford Key,
son of Henry Key, Jr. Henry's parents were Henry and Mary Clark Key. I
have the following in my note regarding John Key:
!MILITARY SERVICE: War of 1812. 4 Feb 1815 - 16 Mar 1815, Captain, SC
Militia. Pension claim, W. Ctf. #15674, Claim #30747, Act of Mar 9,
1878: John Key served as Captain of the South Carolina Militia (Feb
4-Mar 16, 1815) The date of his death is herein confirmed by his widow,
Mary Ann S. Key, who also gives the year of death for his 1st wife,
Winifred Simpkins, and the date and place of his 2nd marriage. She also
provides a physical description "At time of marriage with deponent,
was tall, stoutly built, light hair, blue eyes. When younger, was
slender in size."
