There is a lot of information as each prisoner
was given an English trial in Liverpool so it is possible to trace the
record to the date of the record. Then I guess the ships manifest but I
am not sure if that would be an English record or where the the ship was
recorded ( French , Portugal Spain or elsewhere). This is the most
complete record I have seen . From what I could find it was more of a
way to place free labor into the colonies justifying it though their
court system. If you notices the ship Scripto is the one with Collen
McKinney. But it isn't the ship he came on to America.
There were many more but a letter from the King
halted the deportation. Many of the English history sites give really
good information as to the reasons for the deportations and when it was
stopped and when they were pardoned.
This is known as the first Jacobite Rebellion.
They were loyal to James, the next Jacobite Rebellion was Boney Prince
Charles. Just a few years later , that resulted in more deportation.
This would also explain the
family matches to Australia as many of the
Jacobite were sent there after the second Rebellion.
Garry
Here is some of the information.
Taken from the "National Genealogical Society"
Quarterly, March 1976, Vol 64, number 1. By Clifford Neal Smith (594 W.
Lincoln Hwy, DeKalb, IL 60115):
TRANSPORTED JACOBITE REBELS, 1716
Among the persons transported to the American colonies in 1716 were 637
Scottish rebels captured at Preston, Lancashire, on 14 Nov 1715. The
rebels were supporters of the exiled James II of England and his heirs.
There were many such adherents among the Roman Catholics of Scotland,
and some in Ireland, and among the Nonjurors, a dissident group within
the Church of England.
During the rebellion of 1715 the rebel forces entered Preston on 9 Nov
and, after proclaiming as their king the chevalier of St. George,
remained there for several days, during which the government forces
advanced upon them. The town was assaulted, and on 14 Nov the rebel
general Thomas FORSTER surrendered his army to the King's forces.
Persons shown below, was compiled from ten ship manifests, were taken
prisoner and sent to the American Colonies the following spring as
indentured servants for a seven-year period. Those who refused to be
voluntarily indentured were forced into that condition upon arrival in
the colonies.
According to a receipt given to the commissary general of the rebel
prisoners, 639 prisoners were transported, but, for reasons unknown to
this writer, only 636 were named in the manifest. An additional prisoner
(John DALZYEL) has been identified from other documents.
In the interest of space conservation, ship names and destinations have
been coded. It should be noted that not all prisoners reached the
destinations originally designated.

Deb,
I understand, But it is something to check ,
the immigration records.
We have exactly the same markers. Here is what
I know about Lippincott, if he has not told you. He matches no other
Lippincotts not even his cousins that he knows. His closest match before
was Durham but lacksa support link. Did Lippincott tell you about his
White connection? That is the key with Lippincott. Here’s the link
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb1372/is_1_36/ai_n28712933/ The
Lippincotts and Whites migrated together from the British Isles. I
SUSPECT that our White matches fathered a Lippincott. White is key.
Richards Lippincott brother married a White in England in 1660 there is
a marriage record.
I know the Lippincotts are in the same area at
the same time that Mordecai daughter Ann is (What area and time – please
provide) http://distantcousin.com/marriage/nj/1700/1768.html . A
Lippincott got married in the same area at the same time (Need marriage
details – time, place and who).

Ann McKinney married a gentleman by the name of
Dunham. I have not be able to connect him to Durham. Ann is reported as
never having any children, and that may be an incorrect record. They
were married in NJ in 1736. (oooooooo – here it is New Jersey – this is
the White/Lippincott area – do you have the name of the town that Ann
McKinney and Durham were married in?)
No for the more direct information. There were
1100 men captured at the battle of Preston in Devonshire England on Nov
15, 1715. They were marched to Liverpool. Where 300 were tried and
sentenced to the plantations. Most of these men were Scots all were
Jacobite s. The immigration records have to checked very closely, as
Colen McKinney was first reported to be a French Huguenot , because he
came in on a French ship (this is interesting as my Thurmans lived
around a French town known as Manikin Town http://huguenot-manakin.org/
I’ve never seen any reference to them being French but they traveled to
KY with a number of families from Manakin Town and then intermarried
with them). But further records reported his involvement with the battle
of Preston (how did you come across these? What is the source?).

And then as the first ship leaving England was
a cargo ship names Scoto. Sailing to Antigua. After two years he was
transferred to Woodson Tarlton's Plantation in Henrico County Virginia .
Woodson Tarlton, was a member of the same church as Alexander
McKinney. (name of church or parish?) I will have to find it , I
think it was under Tarlton Information ,
This was noted as Tarlton married his first
cousin and Alexander did not consider it should be done. It is in the
church record. Besides this Alexander there is a second Alexander that
was sent to Maryland and then sent to the plantations. And there is John
who was sent there as well.
I think it may be highly possible these men did
arrive the same way. Since the Jacobites were almost all related to each
other, it may well be the connection.

Garry –
Sydni sent you a previous email explaining that
the families that you match all mutate very quickly. So the FTDNA
relatedness chart/table doesn’t apply to us. For example, my father has
a known 3rd cousin and his dna is
“farther” from him than a more distantly related match – like a 6th
cousin. Another example would be if you had a brother, your dna might
show up with a gd-3 and then a perfect match with a 6th cousin. We just
can’t use that as a tool in our case. The paper trail is our Holy Grail.
Also, I’d like to add that you can count on
there being mistakes in the “accepted” book written McKinney
genealogies. People who didn’t want to take the time to track the papers
made a lot of assumptions prior to dna testing. The McKinney
administrator I’m sure is looking for detailed genealogies of all her
participants.
I do not know that a descendant of this line,
Charles Turman, has been tested. That is why I have copied Sydni. We do
have one TURMAN participant I believe and they don’t match any of the
Thurman lines. AND I don’t know their lineage – if they connect to this
Charles Turman or not.
Regarding non-parental events, that was what I
use to think too. And we do have a couple documented. Walthall and Seay
are known incidents of non-parental events. But we are looking at
something much more unique than a series of non-parental events. I’m
following 6 surname projects, Thurman being one of them. With the other
5, I only have one other incidence with another surname match. My
husband’s Parks line has “one” match with a Cunningham. Our situation is
remarkable in my mind – matches with White, Lippincott, Seay, Talley,
Thurman, McKinney, and Durham. More may come. And what all have in
common (excepts yours so far) is a paper trail to Hanover Co VA mid
1700s. In my gut, this is telling me that either orphans were all passed
out with a Jamestown disaster (illness or massacre) OR the McKinney
theory comes in to play. The McKinney history of prisoners of the
British civil war being transported to the Virgnia colonies makes sense.
Here’s the scenario – all of our lines were members of a Scot community
and taken prisoner and sent to the James River plantations. But how
could we all be related? If we all descend from the same Scot tribe or
community that formed before the time of surnames.

Deb,
There are names on the record are names that
match McKinney names that show up in Southern Indiana basically the same
age. Also , Botetourt County Virginia at this time included almost all
of Kentucky. Before that it was All Washington County Virgina. Also it
is getting back to correct ages for possible connections.
Since the DNA has been done on the family tree
I will just file the record. I am using a simple format to do selection
of point in time.
I was born in 1956 . Since the family
generations by FTDNA does not look at the family tree but only time
frames for mutation. Using the 67 marker matches of Durham and
Lippincott the 50 percent chance level marker matches using a 22 year
generation pattern the time for the family connection the year would be
in the neighborhood of 1740 - 1770 . Collin being born in 1795 would put
a 50/50 connection to Collins father. For the next closest match using
the same formula the two matches (Walthall and Durham ) at 61 markers
puts the time frame around 1648 . So I am basically searching all the
Thurman Durhams, Talley McKinney in that 100 year section I can find
information on. Using of course the simplest of format right now ,
family tree information.
The McKinney family tree information is almost
worthless as 98 percent claim a single family, there might be a
connection but nothing is sticking out. But knowing there is a
possibility of 50 percent chance of a common relative in this period at
least there are some records. Best chance is finding a young widow that
had children that may have accepted a family name from a step father.

Hi Garry
While looking through the Indiana Land Grants,
I came across the one for Alexander McKinney of Bourbon County KY who
bought land in what was then, Washington Co Indiana, 1815. So, I thought
I’d look into the Bourbon Co KY McKinneys for fun. Bourbon County KY
reminded me that Sydni had come across a KY land grant for John and
David McKinney of Bourbon Co KY (also attached). And finally, I have
also attached a pdf which lists some primary documents on file at
Western Kentucky University about John McKinney of Bourbon Co KY. Do you
have any reason to suspect that you may be connected to this group of
McKinneys from Bourbon Co KY? Alexander McKinney bought a lot of land in
Indiana both in Washington and Harrison Counties.
What I’m asking you here is if you think there
is ANY possibility that your Collin McKinney was related in any way to
this Bourbon Co KY group.
Thanks
Deborah
