1) White, Stephen and Robert (1)
Provided by: Pat
Boone
Source: "Probate Records of South Carolina Vol 3, Journal of
the Court of Ordinary 1764-1771".
"Stephen White and Robert White [jointly], 200 acres in Craven County on Cane Creek bounded NE, SE and SW by Robert Ramsey. Survey certified 6-3-1767, granted 2-1-1768. Quit Rent begins in 2 years. Recorded 3-15-1768. William Glasscock, D.S. For the memorialist, James Gambel". |
NOTE: (Reference "4)" below)
Cane creek is located in Union County's south/east section, the Creek runs into the Tiger River, and shortly thereafter into the Broad River. The creek terminates close to Newberry and Fairfield counties, this entire area was once part of the massive county of Craven or Berkeley. Our Robert Sr, ended up on the West side of Union County from Crane creek, in Cross Keys and the Padgett area, sort of West and then slightly south of Crane Creek.
SC Deed 1783-1788 (this entry may be related to the above)

Ordered to be recorded, 27 Apr 1786."

2) White, Stephen and Robert (2)
This Deed is important, in that if verified that this is our Robert who Witnessed this deed, that would say he was active in the Union Area before our earliest record of 1788. Warrants further investigation, at some point in our history.
(Source = UC SC Deed Extracts Vol 1 1785-1800, [1752-1800] Brent Holcomb.)
"B,65-47:
14 Apr 1773, Daniel Plummer and his Wife Mary of Craven County, North
Carolina, formerly, to STEPHEN WHITE of same, BLACKSMITH,
for L750 SC currency, 200 acres in Craven County in the fork of Mitchel
Creek and Fair Forest Creek adj, Joseph Breed, land claimed by Samuel
Jackson, adj. lands granted to said Daniel Plummer, Mary Plummer (X). Wit: ROBERT WHITE, Mark Goodwin, John Steel, Proved by the oath of ROBERT WHITE, 7 March 1786 before John Birdsong". |
NOTE: This area is on the western side of Union County, about the middle of the county.
NOTE: Craven
County SC included Union etc, before Rev War, until 1772
parts of
Craven co was considered North Carolina.
STEPHEN
WHITE - this couldn't be Robert's child, he wasn't
married
yet, plus Robert's, Stephen was born 1786.
This Stephen
is only mentioned in this vol one other time 1789
as a
witness.
First
record of Mildred and Robert admitted to Padgett's Ck Church
1788,
this deed may indicate Robert was in area earlier (1786).
Could this Stephen be his father, Uncle, Brother! Could this be a different
Robert White! Note, that Stephen was a Blacksmith, so was our Robert White Sr.

Discussion
NOTE #1: This area is just south of the TAR RIVER (per Isaac Murphy's letter, "Robert lived for a time along the TAR River". Vine Swamp Creek straddles Lenoir and Jones County NC, if you head North from here you'll cross the Neuse River, and continuing North you'll cross the TAR River. Lenoir and Jones counties rest against Craven county, on its East side. The TAR River is in Pitt County, with Craven co. on the south end. This area is closer to the Coast than the Piedmont. Also, Lenoir Co was once Dobbs County, before 1791.
NOTE #2 - This was information passed to me from Clair Hadley, clairhadley@erols.com, she is not a White researcher but had this information in her notes: "Robert White, of Dobbs had 2 sons that I know of, one was William White who went on the become the Sec. of State for NC. He was married to Anna Caswell, b.1766. (her 2nd husband). She was the daughter of Gov. Caswell. I have no dates for him, but shouldn't be hard to find. He had 4 daughters, 3 of whom married very prominent men. His brother Benejah White was quite complicated in his dealings and marriages. He married the widow of Richard Caswell Jr., son of Gov. Caswell and his 2nd wife Sarah. The marriage occurred before Gov. Caswell's death in 1789, but after his will of 1787. I have no idea if this Robert White is yours. This information that Sec. of State William White was Robert White's son came from Charles Holloman's book, "The History of Lenoir County". The only other information he gives is that Robert White lived on the Tower Hill Rd., east of Kinston. Parts of Craven and Lenoir were formerly Dobbs Co. Perhaps the Robert of the deed you mention is the brother of William and Benjah.
NOTE #3
I have a Robert White from Lenoir County, North Carolina. A personal
family history written by his great granddaughter says his parents were from
England. My Robert White was married to Eleanor Hope. They had the following
children: William White (Secty. of State,NC), Benajah White, Rigden White and
Elizabeth White. Robert White was born in 1736 and died in 1803 at Lenoir
County, NC. Most of his descendants stayed in the counties of Wake, Craven,
Greene, Dobbs and Lenoir in North Carolina. I'm looking at the Vine Swamp Creek
deeds with interest too. The family history I have mentions that Robert White
was a colonel in the Revolutionary Army. Of possible interest to you is an
abstracted entry in, I believe, The Raleigh North Carolina Star (Weekly) dated
Fri 4 Oct 1811 (159:4) and also in the Raleigh Register Fri 18 Oct 1811 (3:5.)
"Died at his seat in Nash County...Capt. Nathan Whitehead.
Hope this may help you in some way.
NOTE #4
Robert White's daughter, Elizabeth White (b.c.1771-1776, NC) was my ancestor.
Elizabeth married 1st John Garland, and then Drury Aldridge, my ancestor. I do
not have a marriage record for Robert and Eleanor, but I do have a death
notice from the 1 Feb 1803 "Raleigh Register"newspaper (p.3, col 5)
which reads: " Died, In Lenoir County, on the 13th Inst Robert White,
Esq. Mrs. White , who was well at the time of her husband's death, was unable to
support her loss, and died in thirty hours afterwards. Mr. White died on the day
he attained his 67th year, and Mrs. White was within three months of the same
age. It adds to this singular calamity, that Mr. White of this city, (the son of
the deceased, and our Secretary of State) set out on the 16th inst. with his
Lady and Family to visit ___ table ___ ___ and gratify them once again with the
sight of their children; when lo! they found them shrouded in the tomb!"

Thomas Whitehead
By consent of the parties, this case in referred to James Thomas &
Wm Sartor, with 5 Jan, 1794
Thomas Whitehead This is the only evidence I can find thus far of Thomas Whitehead from Caswell, showing up in Union Co. My hopes are that our Robert White, may also, have moved down from Caswell Co. NC to Union, with wife Mildred Whitehead & children. We are still researching this theory above, as of Mar 2001, we know, from Land Records, that William Whitehead moved from Granville Co NC to Caswell Co NC to Laurens Co SC, by 1788, the Robert White mentioned, in Caswell Co's Tax Poll from 1781 to 1786, was not on the 1787 Tax Poll, or any subsequent records, in Caswell Co, the Thomas Whitehead we know appears in the Union/Spartanburg area after 1788, we know from Court Records from Caswell and Union/Sptg. That this Thomas lived in Caswell Co NC. Our Theory thus far is that William is the father of our Mildred Whitehead who married our Robert White Sr., The Original Will (only! not transcripts), left by Wm Whitehead of Laurens Co SC, who died in 1805, mentions as his oldest child Milla 'White', as her sisters are also mentioned by their married names... In 1814 after Mildred died (1807), their is a Laurens Co Deed record whereby, Robert White is selling land to a Charter Nichols of Laurens Co SC, he was the Estate Administrator of Wm Whitehead, witness to this deed are Wm White and Lewis Rhodes who married Robert Sr's daughter Mary White. Wm White would be his oldest son, of Robt. and about 36 years old at the time of this deed. I can find no records of Robert Sr buying this land or a grant, the land was on Cane Creek in Laurens, where Wm Whitehead also had land. My theory is this was land left by Wm Whitehead to his daughter Milla White, that Robt White Sr was selling this land back to the Estate Administrators to be keep in the family, this estate was still being handled in 1825, as there was an Admin Bond issued, even though Wm Whitehead died in 1805. My other theory of this Deed in Laurens Co SC, is at the time of Robt White Sr's arrival in SC, Laurens and Union Co were all 'Old 96th District', he may have first bought in Laurens before moving to Union Co area, hope to find some record of this transaction someday. |

"6 March 1745 O.S., Page 19.
Order'd That Seth Petty Poole, Robert Gee, James Gee, Thomas Macclehaney,
Benjamin Winsley, Edward Giveins, Michael Mackay, Willm. McCadow, William
White and John Forest with their male labouring Tithables
clear the road from the north fork of Maherrin River into Cocke's Road
whereof Saml. Willson is Surveior and keep the same in repair accoording
to Law."
Susan and I made the following deductions:
These named men were asked to bring their slaves and build the road and
keep it in repair. Evidently they used their slaves as tithing
much like we do in churches. Perhaps one day out of 10 to labor on
the road. I found an old map of the area in that time frame and
think I found the Maherrin River and it is near the Roanoak in Brunswick
Co., of course.

William White of the Mayflower Short paragraphs from various sources Taken from: "Social Like in Old New Engand", by Mary Caroline Crawford, 1914 "William White, the Pilgrim, has recorded in the family Bible, a "Breeches Bible" of 1588 - "William White maried on ye 3d day of March 1620 to Susannah Tilly. Peregrine WhiteBorn on Board Ye Mayflower... Sonne born to Susanne Whtee December 19th 1620 yt Six oclock morning. Next day we meet for prayer and Thanksgiving."... "Thus New England's most honored of all home festivals is tied up, in narrative history, with a wedding-day and birth of a first baby." The first Thanksgiving Day was observed on December 20. 1620. Taken from "The Elizabethans and America" by A. L. Rowse William White, a wool carder, came to American on the Pilgrim Ship "Speedwell," with him was his wife, Susanna, and their only child, a boy of five. She was also pregnant. The Speedwell embarked on July 20, 1620 with less that fifty "Saints." It was commanded by Captain Reynolds. The Speedwell "was in such bad disrepair that the Saints after buying her had the added expense of stepping in new masts and fitting her with a new suit of sail. "Carver and Robinson had married sisters, Catherine and Bridget White, of Sturton-le-Steeple, near Scrooby. Later 'Mrs. Susanna White was delivered of a son, who was named Peregrine who as the first of the English to be born in New England." Mr. William White died February 21st, also Christopher Martin died and on December 24th Solomon Martin died. Roger White was the brother of Bridget Robinson, the wife of the Pilgrim pastor." From the, Pilgrim Reader by George F. Willson, The Story of the Pilgrims, published by Doubleday and Co., Garden City, NY 1953. "Mrs. Catherine White, 1580-1621, of Sturton-le-Steeple, eldest sister of Bridget, John Robinson's wife, married George Leggett in 1596 - one child, Marie, who evidently died young; married Carver in 1600 and died of a broken heart soon after her husband; no children. Master William White, on of the aristocrats of the company with sufficient means to bring indentured servants - 1592-1621; a wool carder--perhaps related to the White Family of Sturton-le-Steeple." Quoting from a letter to Mrs. Anna Fore, of Corpus Christi, Texas, written by Mrs. Elizabeth E. James of Ann Arbor, Michigan; "Mr. William White - White died soon after landing, Susanna, his wife married (2) Mr. E. Winslow. Resolved White, a son, married and had five children. Peregrine White, a son born after arrival at Cape Cod, married and had two children before 1650. William White's father was probably John White of Tuxford, England--his wife Jane was a daughter of Thomas Williamson. Mary White, a daughter of John White, married (1) Mr. Rakestraw, and (2) Mr. James Crigg." Mrs. James was a DAR and had five supplements ancestors in DAR: Cuthbert Williamson, John White, James Brown, Charles Venable, and John Jeffries, Sr. From "The Pilgrim Reader" by George F. Willison Master William White was born around 1592 and died in 1621. In 1621, his "widow of three months married Edward Winslow, who lost his wife two months before, were the first married at Plymouth by Governor Bradford. Susanna had two children and the new marriage brought more. Peregrine White, a step-son of Edward Winslow, in 1648 married Sarah Bassett (see Fortune Saints), was granted 200 acres by the General Court in 1665" in respect that he was the first of the English that was born in these parts." He was a Captain of the militia in 1673. He did not join the church until 1698, in his 78th year. He died at Marshfield, just north of Duxbury, which he named Carewell for his home in England. "Daniel Webster two centuries later had a house on this estate and died and was buried there close to the grave of Winslow's erring step-son. Peregrine White, a stubborn separatist, Peregrine refused to join the church till he was almost eighty, being in the former part of his life extravagant, yet he was much reformed in his last years and 'died hopefully. ' " Master Edward Winslow (1595-1655) of Droitwich, Worchestershire; printer. He was assistant printer at Choir Alley press, 1617-19. He was a "member of parties sent out to explore Cape Cod and environs; married at Plymouth, 1621 to Mrs. Susanna (Fuller) White; diplomatic mission to Massasoit, 1621, author of 'come on' literature to attract settlers; agent to England in 1623; opened trade along Kennebec, 1625; member of General Court as governor or asst. governor, 1624-46; Purchaser, 1626; Undertaker, 1627-1641; jailed in London by Archbishop Land, 1635; removed to Marshfield, 1637; commissioner to New England Confederacy, 1643-44; sailed for London 1646, and never returned; chairman of joint English-Dutch commission to assess damage done English ships by Dutch in neutral Danish Ports; chief of three commissioners appointed by Oliver Cromwell to conquer Spanish West Indies; died of tropical fever on flagship off Jamaica; buried sea with salvo of cannon." It was stated in the Pilgrim Reader that; "records dating back to the very first child to the Pilgrims in the New World have been uncovered at Provincetown---Peregrine White was born in 1620 on the Mayflower in Provincetown Harbor." Roger White was the brother of Bridget Robinson, the wife of the Pilgrim's pastor, John Robinson, and also the brother of Catherine Carver. Bridget Robinson, the first wife of John White, died in 1643 in England. "Master John White of Dorchester, a minister and laborer in behalf of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and called one of the chief founders. His birthplace was at Stanton Street in 1575, his home in England. Thomas White, was the warden of New College, Oxford 1553-1573 and no doubt through his influence that John White's father became lessee to the Manor Farm at Stanton,m St. John. The boy was well educated and in 1606 installed rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity at Dorchester in Wessex. He was know everywhere as the shepherd of his flock." Roanoke Island VA The Lost Colony on Roanoke Island VA John White was appointed by Sir Walter Raleigh to be Governor of the Colony with twelve assistants. They arrived off Cape Hatteras in July, 1657 with a charter for the City of Raleigh in Virginia. Soon after their arrival, Virginia Dare, granddaughter of Governor White, was born. She was the daughter of Ananias and Eleanor [White] Dare. John White returned to England for supplies for the colony , and, when he returned, the colony was gone. John White was engaged in mapping the coasts and sounds and also painted water colors of the plants, fish, and the natives they found there. Many of these maps and papers were lost in the sea. After a hurricane the colony decided to leave, and, when they transferred their goods to Drake's ships, many of White's papers left on Roanoke Island and spoiled by the indians, The papers which still remain are a valued record of the natural conditions and resources of North America at the time the Englishmen first found them. Working with John White was Thomas Hariot, According to the Elizabethians and American by A. L. Rowse, their "cartographic work was incomparably the best yet done on any part of North America by any Europeans. White's depiction of the Indian figures, through their reproduction in Debry, became the regular conventional representation of the Indian to the European eye for more than a century. " According to Virginia Magazine, Vol. 35, October 1927, 05iv, John White, an English artist, Visited America and made many water colors and drawings of life interest. There are 1,585 original sketches in the British Museum which in 1891 were photographed for the U.S. National Museum, Washington, D. C. White was a member of the second Raleigh Expedition to Roanoke, Virginia in 1687. From The White Family - Data compiled by Mr. W. A Grozier The White Family of America, as given in Richmond Times Dispatch of 9-4-1804, desends from William White, on of the Pilgrim Fathers who came over in the Mayflower; bt a descendant of the Whites of Virgina sent the following claim; That they are through John White, who brought the colonists to Roanoke in 1687 and was appointed Governor of all Virginia, which event antedates the landing of the Pilgrims. Could the William White who came with Capt. John Smith in 1607 be the son of the above John White? The following desent is shown of the English Family as early as can be traced, which tallies with the record in Burke's peerage and others; Thomas White: Loard Mayor of
London 1553-1559 - Time of Queen Mary In 1654 a will is recorded of William White, I, brother of John White II of England, He was first pastor of the Counties York, and Lancaster, possibly the same who came in 1607 wich Capt. John Smith as a "Laberie." He was twice married and his second wife was Martha Brice. She willed 1000 acres of land to Margaret and Jermiah White (then in London). Recorded in York. JAMESTOWN MASSACRE: Surviving the Jamestown Massacre in 1622 were John, Thomas, William, Leonard and James White. (Smithers Lyon Tyler Histories). In 1643 John White III, son of Rev. William White, took out a land patent in Jamestown. He died in 1698. The Wills of Thomas White and Henry White were recorded in Yorktown. They mention several children but for some reason are not given in "Coloniel Wills." Henry White names his uncle John White as executor. About 1760 Thomas Willis White of Yorktown marries Miss Sykes, daughter of Col. Tatton Sykes of the British Army. In 1787 Thomas, two Johns, William, James White, etc. applied for payment for services in the Revolutionary Army. The Children of Thomas and Miss Sykes White were; Lucy White, who married Samuel Taylor ca. 1787 of Yorktown; John White emigrated to Canton Mississippi; Ann or Margaret White, who married Mr. Freeman of Norfolk, she died in 1860 at about 100 years old; and a son William White, whose sons William and Arthur White lived in Norfolk. In 1789 a Thomas White married Sallie Davis of Yorktown and left four children. |
