It is important to note here that Person Co NC was created from Caswell Co in 1791.
This Robert White was in Caswell from 1780 to 1787 (tax polls), and before 1791 both
the tributaries & parts of the Roanoke River & Tar Rivers, touched & feed into Caswell
Co NC, Robert's Grandson Isaac Murphy, wrote in 1871, "Grandfather was born Near the
Roanoke River VA and lived a time along the Tar River NC"
, this may have been Halifax
VA & Caswell Co, area, Halifax was just across the border, north, from Caswell Co NC.

Before Caswell was split in half to form Person Co NC 1791

Granville County NC - marked to show
Country Line District with a Robert White
Robert, N. West against old Caswell Co NC pre-1791

marked Goshen District with a William Whitehead
William, near TAR river against old Caswell Co NC pre1791

The Two Above mentioned Districts existed in 1778 - during Oath of Allegiance

Notes: This theory seems logical because Robert married Wm's daughter Milly about 1775...................
from Granville evidence the only William Whitehead in the county is listed from 1769 to 1771..................
Wm Whitehead on Militia List 1771, in 1778 he leaves Granville moves to Moon's crk in Cas-.,,...................
well County NC, just west of Granville. This is the only piece of information I've seen that places Robert......
well near the our Whitehead family, in the time frame of Robt's marriage to Milly, and near the Tar River, and
just south of Halifax & Mecklenburg Co VA, where a Robert White joins 6th VA Regt 1776. Remember Soldiers
from the 6th VA were recruited from bordering counties of Mecklenburg Co VA, which included Granville NC....
Robt White of the 6th VA was on Furlough in May when Oath of Allegiance was taken in Granville May of 1778.
We can prove William Whitehead lived in Granville Co then Caswell then Laurens County SC via Documentations.

The Great Philadelphia Wagon Road          UP^
is the most likely migration path Robert
White took to get from NC to SC in 1787
It droped into SC very close to what became
Union Dist and Spartanburg Counties.  Their
is a Robert White Land Grant in the Laurens
Co area once old 96th district, and our Robt
did owned land on Cane Creek SC, next to Union.
Though this area was Bounty Grant area, I am
not sure it was our Robert.

The Trail was also called the Great Wagon Road,
The Warriors Path... and a few others.  Opened
officially by the British in 1750, used prior anyway...

If Robert Parents came down prior to his birth, it
most likely used the Fall line Road or the coast
Kings Highway, used primarily by those with money.

Caswell county was about 2 counties over to the right
of the Wagon Road, on the border with NC and VA.

UP^    Caswell Co 1777 - Caswell District upper left, note Hogan's Crk & Moons Crk - Wm Whitehead - Robert White?
UP^    Moons Crk Wm Whitehead sold his land
UP^    Remember Person Co was part of Caswell until 1791
UP^     Robert White was in Caswell from at least 1780 to 1787/88
UP^     All of this area was ORANGE Co NC until 1770's Then Split
UP^     Orange County Districts 1774 - before the county was chopped up into other counties
It is important to remember while researching the old records - Whiteheads had lived in Chatham

Why do I think this Robert White of Caswell County NC is our Robert?

Link to Robert White Sr Web Page

1.  Isaac Murphy Letter of 1871
"Grandfather was born near the Roanoke River VA and lived a time along the Tar River NC"
Both the Roanoke and Tar touched and ran through Old Caswell Co (prior to 1791), when
Person Co was created from Caswell, a Robert White and William Whitehead were there until 1788.

2.  William Whitehead, father-in-law to Robert White Sr, in his Will names his oldest child daughter, Milly
as "Milla White".  He lives in Laurens Co SC, on Cane Crk, our Robt had land on Cane Crk also, sold 1814.
Laurens and Union were Old 96th Dist where Robert arrived in 1787/88.  The counties of Laurens
and Union are next to each other, in Union's southern west corner, 1825 map of Union shows an area called
     "White"
this is after our White's who lived in this area, and most of the families. we married into are there...
Have not found a land purchase by Robt in Laurens, could be land Milly inherited from her father?
As Milly White died in 1807, Wm Whitehead her dad, in 1805, Robert would have to dispose of the land.
On This 1814 Deed sale, Wm White, son of  Robert Sr, and son-in-law, Lewis Rhodes were witnesses.
The sale was to Charter Nichols (Nickles), he was the Estate Administrator to Wm Whitehead's Estate,
William Whitehead 2nd married to Margaret (Marey) Nichols, in Laurens Co, may have been related to Charter?

3.  William Whitehead can clearly be tracked from Caswell Co NC, where most of his siblings were born,
to Granville, back to Caswell, and on to Laurens Co in 1788, via Deeds and court and tax records.

4.  Robert White of Caswell, was on the Tax records there from 1780 to 1787, and so was our Wm Whitehead.

5.  Robert White is witness on Wm Whitehead deed formerly of Caswell Co. However, the Deed transaction was 1791
but Ref Wm Whitehead now of Lawrence Co SC (they meant Laurens), with Wm Morgan and Robt White wit.
so Robert is already in SC as is Wm Whitehead, Wm still had land holdings in Caswell, after he moved to Laurens.
**important to note here that Old Caswell was up against Granville, before Person Co was formed from Caswell.
**Note Wm Morgan - there was another Wm Morgan in Laurens arrived after ours, ours also moved to Union Co.

6.  Other Caswell Families migrated to Laurens Co SC, some probably with our group, such as Hudson Berry
Family. If you wanted to stay alive in those days, you did 'not' venture into the wilderness alone with your family...

7.  Some of the Families of Caswell, also had lived in Hanover Co VA, just a note here, I tested my DNA and
we connect to many other surnames and Hanover VA seems to be the common denominator....Future study!

8.  I am finding that other families of Union Co SC had also come this same path... Murphy's, Jacksons, Gibson,
Browning's, and others, families our White's married into, in Union Co SC.

This mainly, circumstantial evidence, has lead me to formulate the THEORY of Robert White of Caswell being ours...

DNA - we need many more White's on our lineage and other branches to test, thus far, I must be the only
White of Robert White Sr to have tested.   I matched with other White's, that are stuck on their research
as I am, and we cannot make that connection, I feel, they may be from a sibling of Robert's etc.
DNA - Many other Surnames match with our DNA, raising many questions, hopefully, that can be answered in
my lifetime, but the New Genetic Genealogy is just getting started and hopefully will help us in the future.

Below is a extract from STEPHEN WHITE's web page
In the process of tracking Stephen through Georgia
researchers have found interactions, from other families
who have roots in CASWELL CO NC, that may help
our research to prove Robert White Sr had also had once
lived in Caswell Co, along with Milly Whitehead's family.

In reply to the above Deeds, provided by LueAnne,
Kathleen Mays writes:

I’ve read through the great information and a couple of names jumped out.  Deed Book F p. 431 has Samuel Fielder buying land on Hard Labor waters.  It is witnessed by Stephen White and the J.P., Levi Renalds.  He is also the J.P. on Deed book G, p.90 (again Stephen witness) written as Levi Reynolds.  He is Levi Runnels (later changed to Reynolds) of the Runnels clan that I am familiar with.  His parents are Dudley and Fannie Herbert Runnels, formerly of Caswell NC.  There is another Dudley Runnels of Caswell that is either his father or his uncle, no one is quite sure.  On the White side he stands out because if you look on Mike’s website you will find Dudley Runnels mentioned in a land transaction of Robert White of Caswell.  That’s a heck of a coincidence and seems to support Mike’s theory that this is our Robert.  You will find Samuel Fielder listed on p.122 on the 1817 Morgan tax list along with Stephen.

The Fielders and Runnels are part of a large group that migrated together.  I read about them at this website
(Link no longer valid) =>
http://www.eaglequestpro.com/ray/FindingAncestors.htm

Levi Runnels aka William Levi Runnels aka Levi Reynolds, was born in 1785, about the time his parents moved to Wilkes co GA.  He wound up in Morgan Ga where his first child was born in 1814.  He was in the Claiborne LA 1840 census and had a daughter who married in Union co Arkansas in 1844.  (Union co Arkansas being of interest that some of Vincent White’s family was there about that time.)  He died in Claiborne in 1851.

Note injected by Mike White (7/30/2011)

Found an online article about Sam Houston that included Caswell Co NC Connections
thought it interesting enough to post it here:

Runnels

...Houston then set his sights on the governorship, and declared himself a candidate. In 1857 he was stunned in defeat by
Harden R. Runnels. The Runnels family was thriving. The Harden name was also from the Dan River, with industrialists, bankers, and connections still from the mill people of England even today. Two years later Sam Houston won in a landslide. Shortly, the Civil War erupted, and in 1861 Houston is deposed when he refused to swear allegiance to the Confederate States. Houston's first son, Sam Houston, Jr., was badly wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, and Sam Houston (the "Raven") died the next year (1863). Temple Lea Houston, the youngest son of Sam Houston, continued the saga. The Runnels family of Caswell County, North Carolina is only one of many families to migrate south and west. Historian, Jon Kukla, author of "A Wilderness So Immense," told the story very well, and included names. He said, that he discovered that all the people who established the country from Jamestowne to Texas were all kin!! Yes, and many of them came through the Dan River area of Caswell County, and dotted the landscape with Baptist churches....
