1779 Counties: Granville
- Edgecombe
- Bute - Halifax - N Hampton - Bertie
- Terrel
County
Formations:
-
Person County was originally included
in Caswell County and was formed in 1791.
-
Granville County was formed from
Edgecombe County in 1746.
-
Vance County was carved out of
Franklin, Granville and Warren Counties in
1881.
-
Warren County was formed in 1779
from the northern half of Bute County.
-
Franklin County was formed in 1779
when Bute County was abolished and the
counties of Franklin and Warren were formed
from it. Bute County was formed from
Granville County in 1764 and it was only in
existence for the fifteen year period
between 1764 and 1779.
-
Halifax County created from Edgecombe
County in 1758.
-
Nash County was formed in 1777 from
Edgecombe County.
-
Edgecombe Precinct (County) was first
formed about 1732 from Bertie Precinct. It
was one of seven precincts on Albemarle
County's List of Arrears of Quit Rents in
1735. However, the official beginning of the
county was 1741.
-
Wilson County became a county in 1855
from portions of Nash, Edgecombe, Johnston
and Wayne.
-
Pitt County was formed in 1760 from
Beaufort County.
-
Beaufort Precinct (County) came into
existence about 1712 when the name of
Pam(p)tecough Precinct was changed to
Beaufort Precinct. Pam(p)tecough was the
original colonial spelling of Pamlico.
Originally, the county took in only the
north side of the Pamlico River and extended
west into the area that later became Pitt
County. By 1760, it was similar in size and
shape to the modern Beaufort County,
encompassing both sides of the Pamlico.
-
Note:
Person County
formed from part of
Caswell Co 1791, Robert White may
have been
living by his father-in-law, William
Whitehead from about 1780-1788, Robert
departed
Caswell County in 1787, last tax poll he was
on, Wm Whitehead in 1788, last tax poll. Mr
Whitehead's path is clearly proven from
Granville, to Caswell, to Laurens Co SC in
1788. In
Robt's grandson's (Isaac Murphy) Letter of
1886, he says that Robert lived along the
TAR
river for a time before moving to South
Carolina. The TAR river began in old Caswell
Co NC...
Wm Whitehead came from a large family, many
of which were born in Caswell Co NC, his
Will
of 1805, Laurens Co SC, clearly mentions his
oldest child as Milly WHITE, as her sisters
were named by their married names. I
believe Robert White and Mildred Whitehead
were in Luarens County for a short period,
1787/1788, along Cane Creek, (so was Wm) as
Robert Sr sold land in 1814 along Cane Creek
in Laurens, also note, at this time 1787/88,
there was no Laurens or Union county, it was
"Old 96 District, the... deed (1814) had, Wm
White (Robt's oldest son) and son-in-law,
Lewis Rhodes as witnesses... Also note in
this period of 1780-1787, the Revolutionary
War was going on, Robert Sr was a
Blacksmith, at his time, his obituary says
he served 6 years in the War, it may have
been as a Blacksmith, a cherished trade, at
the time of the War, making weapons, etc.,
also note it took about 8 years to become a
Blacksmith......... a well respected craft,
of the day.... Laurens Co, Old 96th
district, was a Rev War Bounty Land Grant
area, and there were 2 Robt White Grants,
one may be ours...

John Marshall Jr formerly of Brunswick
Co VA
Living in Bute Co NC, with son-in-law William White, in same household
Provided by:
Jack White
(jackhwhite120@verizon.net) |
Mike,
It's been a while since we corresponded. I just wanted to add another
piece to the White family puzzle. You may recall that my 5th great
grandfather, Cajabeth White, had a brother named William White, with whom
Cajabeth was residing in 1766. After that I have not been able to identify
William among the many Whites of that name. Among the possibilities is a
William White who in 1771 was residing in the household of John Marshall Jr. of
Bute Co, NC.
This John Marshall was
originally from Brunswick Co, VA
and by the time of his
death in 1782
was a very wealthy man. The estate records show that William White had
married one of his daughters, and by the time of Marshall's death had emigrated
to Abbeville Co, SC. (Some records say Edgefield Co, SC, but I believe
that is an error.)
William White also served as the
executor of the estate of John Marshall 3, who died in 1788.
I have not been able to identify the name of William's wife, who is about the
only Marshall child not expressly named in the estate papers.
I have not been able to prove or disprove whether this William White is
Cajabeth's brother, and I've no real reason to connect him to your family.
But I know you like to keep an inventory of all the possibilities, so I thought
I would mention it.Incidentally, we were able to
persuade another fifth cousin to take the Y-DNA test. So in a couple of
months I should have a very good idea what Y-DNA strain is actually reflective
of my White family.

[Caswell Co NC. - Halifax Co VA Pittsylvania Co VA]
I found a
reference to a suit against
Hampton
White, William Whitehead, and Robert
White.
The three evidently owed
William Holderness
a debt. They lost the case. I
do not think the
case file survived. I have another
place I want to check at some point.

Appears that
Mr Holderness won his case against the

who is Hamton White?

I took some
time to check
Hampton White of Halifax County
in some of the books at the library.
Found Hampton mentioned in Halifax
County in several books. Did not take
the time to copy.
Also found a
will of Jeremiah
White of Pittsylvania County
written 28 April 1788. He mentions
his son
Hamilton and son Robert.
There is a
Rev. War pension application for
Hampton White
of Halifax County.
Not sure if
we are talking about one or two Hampton
White's. However, this could be helpful
for our connection to Robert.
As an aside,
Jeremiah
White lived next door to Francis Wisdom
in the 1780's.

he later migrated down to Edgefield Co,

up in the hands of a William White --
most likely the son of Lt. Richard White

HENRY PHILLIPS WHITE
BIOGRAPHY and GENEALOGY
(1881-aft. 1911)
Perry, Jefferson and Shelby County, Alabama
HENRY PHILLIPS WHITE was a lawyer and inspector
of journals of the State senate in 1911. He was
born July 19, 1881, at Marion, Perry County the
son of GEORGE PHILLIPS and MARY ELIZABETH
(BAILEY) WHITE, the former who was born near
Uniontown, Perry County, and lived at Marion.
HENRY'S father entered the Confederate States
Army at the age of sixteen and served with
SELDEN'S battery until he was paroled at
Meridian, Mississippi, at the close of the war.
Then he became the tax collector of Perry County
for two terms. Later, he represented the county
in the State legislature for three terms.
HENRY was grandson of GEORGE M. WHITE and
NANCY McDAVID (MORGAN) WHITE, who lived at
Uniontown. GEORGE WHITE moved from Granville
County, N. C., to Perry County soon after 1830.
NANCY McDAVID (MORGAN) WHITE moved with her
parents, from Laurens District, S. C., to Perry
County. His materal grandparents were JAMES
FRANCIS and ELLEN(MOSELEY) BAILEY.
His great-grandfather was JOSHUA WHITE, of
Granville County, North Carolina and his was
also the great-grandson of WILLIAM MORGAN, and
his wife who was a CUNNINGHAM prior to her
marriage. WILLIAM MORGAN moved from Laurens
District, South Carolina to Perry County.
HENRY'S great-grandparents MIDDLETON and
ELIZABETH (COLEMAN) MOSELEY, moved from
Edgefield, South Carloina to Perry County.
HENRY'S great-great-grandfather, GEORGE WHITE
resided in Granville, North Carolina, where his
ancestors, of English descent, had moved before
the Revolution. HENRY'S great-great-grandmother
SALLIE RYAN, mother of ELIZABETH COLEMAN, then a
GALLMAN, and a niece of CAPT. JOHN RYAN, a
leader of one of the patriot bands in western
South Carolina, struggled against Tories and
British.
HENRY WHITE attended the country public schools,
and the Uniontown public school. He graduated
from Marion military institute in 1900 and from
the law department of the University of Alabama
with honors, LL. B., in 1902. He entered the
practice of law in Birmingham in 1902, and for
several years was associated with the firm of
WALKER TILLMAN, CAMPBELL & MORROW and their
successors, TILLMAN, GRUBB BRADLEY & MORROW.
From 1907-1909, he was assistant counsel for the
Carolina, Clinchneld & Ohio Railway, at Johnson
City, Tennessee, and in 1909 he practiced his
profession at Centreville. For some years he was
city attorney of Centreville, and during the
session of 1911 was inspector of journals for
the State senate. He was a Democrat, a
Presbyterian, a Mason, and a member of Kappa
Alpha college fraternity. He married LUCIA
LOUISE REYNOLDS, daughter of CAPTAIN HENRY CLAY
and MARY (BOYD) REYNOLDS and resided in
Centreville, Bibb County, Alabama.

White Family of
Chatham County NC
Bible of John White, Jr - Hester Brantley
Author: P. Pepple
Date: 23 Nov 2001
3:39 AM GMT
Surnames: White, Brantley
I found this bible record in Southern Bible Records, Vol. 5, by Lester,
pages 89, 90. It was owned by a lady in Wilmington, NC. It had no
locations with it but I believe it is a family that was in Chatham Co.
NC. You decide.
Listed with month- day- year.
John WHITE, Jr. born 5-11-1770
married 1792
Hester Brantley born 5-8-1774
Sallie born 5-11-1793
Zachariah born 4-9-1797
Nancy born 11-13-1798
Elizabeth born 4-18-1800
James born 8-5-1801
John 111 born 1-13-1802
William born 3-14-1803
Anna Mariah born 12-4-1805
Patsy born 5-2-1807
Polly Bradford born 8-1-1808
Sherwood born 8-29-1810
Simeon 4-5-1812
John Brantley 1816
The bible does not state that these are all children of John and Hester
but the dates run consistent with that idea.
Keep in mind that Sallie would probably be Sarah, Patsy would probably be
Martha and Polly Bradford would probably be Mary Bradford White.
I am not related as far as I know but I don't know who my Whites are. |

president of the Knoxville branch of the Bank of Tennessee.
An ardent strict constructionist and
lifelong states' rights advocate, White was one of President
Jackson's most trusted allies in Congress in the late 1820s and
early 1830s. White fought against the national bank, tariffs, and
the use of federal funds for internal improvements, and led efforts
in the Senate to pass the Indian Removal Act of 1830.[2]:153 In
1833, at the height of the Nullification Crisis, White, as the
Senate's president pro tempore, coordinated negotiations over the
Clay compromise.
Suspicious of the growing power of
the presidency, White began to distance himself from Jackson in the
mid-1830s, and realigned himself with Henry Clay and the burgeoning
Whig Party. He was eventually forced out of the Senate when
Jackson's allies, led by James K. Polk, gained control of the
Tennessee state legislature and demanded his resignation.
White was born in what is now Iredell County, North
Carolina (but then part of Rowan County, the eldest son of James White and Mary
Lawson White. James, a Revolutionary War veteran, moved his family to the
Tennessee frontier in the 1780s, and played an active role in the failed State
of Franklin. In 1786, he constructed White's Fort, which would eventually
develop into Knoxville, Tennessee. Young Hugh was a sentinel at the fort, and
helped manage its small gristmill.
In 1791, White's Fort was chosen as the capital of the
newly created Southwest Territory, and James White's friend, William Blount, was
appointed governor of the territory. Hugh Lawson White worked as Blount's
personal secretary, and was tutored by early Knoxville minister and educator,
Samuel Carrick. In 1793, he fought in the territorial militia under John Sevier
during the Chickamauga Wars. Historian J. G. M. Ramsey credited Hugh Lawson
White's company with the killing of the Cherokee chief, King Fisher, and White's
granddaughter and biographer, Nancy Scott, stated that White fired the fatal
shot.
White studied law in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, under
James Hopkins, and was admitted to the bar in 1796. Two years later, he married
Elizabeth Carrick, the daughter of his mentor, Samuel.
White's father, James White (1747-1820), was the
founder of Knoxville, Tennessee. His brothers-in-law included surveyor Charles
McClung (1761-1835), who platted Knoxville in 1791, Judge John Overton
(1766-1833), the co-founder of Memphis, Tennessee, and Senator John Williams
(1778-1837). White and his first wife, Elizabeth Carrick, had 12 children, two
of whom died in infancy. Between 1825 and 1831, eight of their surviving ten
children died of tuberculosis Their lone surviving son, Samuel (1825-1860),
served as mayor of Knoxville in 1857.
White's farm lay just west of Second Creek in
Knoxville. In the late 19th century, this became a land development area known
as "White's Addition." The area is now part of the University of Tennessee
campus and the Fort Sanders neighborhood. White County, Arkansas was also named
in his honor.
