William White of the Mayflower Short paragraphs from various sources Taken from: "Social Life in Old New England", by Mary Caroline Crawford, 1914 "William White, the Pilgrim, has recorded in the family Bible, a "Breeches Bible" of 1588 - "William White married on ye 3d day of March 1620 to Susannah Tilly. Peregrine White Born on Board Ye Mayflower... Sonne born to Susanne Whtee December 19th 1620 yt Six oclock morning. Next day we meet for prayer and Thanksgiving."... "Thus New England's most honored of all home festivals is tied up, in narrative history, with a wedding-day and birth of a first baby." The first Thanksgiving Day was observed on December 20. 1620. Taken from "The Elizabethans and America" by A. L. Rowse William White, a wool carder, came to American on the Pilgrim Ship "Speedwell," with him was his wife, Susanna, and their only child, a boy of five. She was also pregnant. The Speedwell embarked on July 20, 1620 with less that fifty "Saints." It was commanded by Captain Reynolds. The Speedwell "was in such bad disrepair that the Saints after buying her had the added expense of stepping in new masts and fitting her with a new suit of sail. "Carver and Robinson had married sisters, Catherine and Bridget White, of Sturton-le-Steeple, near Scrooby. Later 'Mrs. Susanna White was delivered of a son, who was named Peregrine who as the first of the English to be born in New England." Mr. William White died February 21st, also Christopher Martin died and on December 24th Solomon Martin died. Roger White was the brother of Bridget Robinson, the wife of the Pilgrim pastor." From the, Pilgrim Reader by George F. Willson, The Story of the Pilgrims, published by Doubleday and Co., Garden City, NY 1953. "Mrs. Catherine White, 1580-1621, of Sturton-le-Steeple, eldest sister of Bridget, John Robinson's wife, married George Leggett in 1596 - one child, Marie, who evidently died young; married Carver in 1600 and died of a broken heart soon after her husband; no children. Master William White, on of the aristocrats of the company with sufficient means to bring indentured servants - 1592-1621; a wool carder--perhaps related to the White Family of Sturton-le-Steeple." Quoting from a letter to Mrs. Anna Fore, of Corpus Christi, Texas, written by Mrs. Elizabeth E. James of Ann Arbor, Michigan; "Mr. William White - White died soon after landing, Susanna, his wife married (2) Mr. E. Winslow. Resolved White, a son, married and had five children. Peregrine White, a son born after arrival at Cape Cod, married and had two children before 1650. William White's father was probably John White of Tuxford, England--his wife Jane was a daughter of Thomas Williamson. Mary White, a daughter of John White, married (1) Mr. Rakestraw, and (2) Mr. James Crigg." Mrs. James was a DAR and had five supplements ancestors in DAR: Cuthbert Williamson, John White, James Brown, Charles Venable, and John Jeffries, Sr. From "The Pilgrim Reader" by George F. Willison Master William White was born around 1592 and died in 1621. In 1621, his "widow of three months married Edward Winslow, who lost his wife two months before, were the first married at Plymouth by Governor Bradford. Susanna had two children and the new marriage brought more. Peregrine White, a step-son of Edward Winslow, in 1648 married Sarah Bassett (see Fortune Saints), was granted 200 acres by the General Court in 1665" in respect that he was the first of the English that was born in these parts." He was a Captain of the militia in 1673. He did not join the church until 1698, in his 78th year. He died at Marshfield, just north of Duxbury, which he named Carewell for his home in England. "Daniel Webster two centuries later had a house on this estate and died and was buried there close to the grave of Winslow's erring step-son. Peregrine White, a stubborn separatist, Peregrine refused to join the church till he was almost eighty, being in the former part of his life extravagant, yet he was much reformed in his last years and 'died hopefully. ' " Master Edward Winslow (1595-1655) of Droitwich, Worchestershire; printer. He was assistant printer at Choir Alley press, 1617-19. He was a "member of parties sent out to explore Cape Cod and environs; married at Plymouth, 1621 to Mrs. Susanna (Fuller) White; diplomatic mission to Massasoit, 1621, author of 'come on' literature to attract settlers; agent to England in 1623; opened trade along Kennebec, 1625; member of General Court as governor or asst. governor, 1624-46; Purchaser, 1626; Undertaker, 1627-1641; jailed in London by Archbishop Land, 1635; removed to Marshfield, 1637; commissioner to New England Confederacy, 1643-44; sailed for London 1646, and never returned; chairman of joint English-Dutch commission to assess damage done English ships by Dutch in neutral Danish Ports; chief of three commissioners appointed by Oliver Cromwell to conquer Spanish West Indies; died of tropical fever on flagship off Jamaica; buried sea with salvo of cannon." It was stated in the Pilgrim Reader that; "records dating back to the very first child to the Pilgrims in the New World have been uncovered at Provincetown---Peregrine White was born in 1620 on the Mayflower in Provincetown Harbor." Roger White was the brother of Bridget Robinson, the wife of the Pilgrim's pastor, John Robinson, and also the brother of Catherine Carver. Bridget Robinson, the first wife of John White, died in 1643 in England. "Master John White of Dorchester, a minister and laborer in behalf of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and called one of the chief founders. His birthplace was at Stanton Street in 1575, his home in England. Thomas White, was the warden of New College, Oxford 1553-1573 and no doubt through his influence that John White's father became lessee to the Manor Farm at Stanton,m St. John. The boy was well educated and in 1606 installed rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity at Dorchester in Wessex. He was know everywhere as the shepherd of his flock." White's - Lost Colony Roanoke Island VA The Lost Colony on Roanoke Island VA John White was appointed by Sir Walter Raleigh to be Governor of the Colony with twelve assistants. They arrived off Cape Hatteras in July, 1657 with a charter for the City of Raleigh in Virginia. Soon after their arrival, Virginia Dare, granddaughter of Governor White, was born. She was the daughter of Ananias and Eleanor [White] Dare. John White returned to England for supplies for the colony , and, when he returned, the colony was gone. John White was engaged in mapping the coasts and sounds and also painted water colors of the plants, fish, and the natives they found there. Many of these maps and papers were lost in the sea. After a hurricane the colony decided to leave, and, when they transferred their goods to Drake's ships, many of White's papers left on Roanoke Island and spoiled by the indians, The papers which still remain are a valued record of the natural conditions and resources of North America at the time the Englishmen first found them. Working with John White was Thomas Hariot, According to the Elizabethians and American by A. L. Rowse, their "cartographic work was incomparably the best yet done on any part of North America by any Europeans. White's depiction of the Indian figures, through their reproduction in Debry, became the regular conventional representation of the Indian to the European eye for more than a century. " According to Virginia Magazine, Vol. 35, October 1927, 05iv, John White, an English artist, Visited America and made many water colors and drawings of life interest. There are 1,585 original sketches in the British Museum which in 1891 were photographed for the U.S. National Museum, Washington, D. C. White was a member of the second Raleigh Expedition to Roanoke, Virginia in 1687. TOP The White Family of America, as given in Richmond Times Dispatch of 9-4-1804, desends from William White, one of the Pilgrim Fathers who came over in the Mayflower; bt a descendant of the Whites of Virgina sent the following claim; That they are through John White, who brought the colonists to Roanoke in 1687 and was appointed Governor of all Virginia, which event antedates the landing of the Pilgrims. Could the William White who came with Capt. John Smith in 1607 be the son of the above John White? |

The White's of Lancaster County
Virginia: Richard White of Lancaster County, Virginia had a grant of 500 acres of land west of Rappahannock River in 1657 and an additional 500 acres. In 1658 this land fell in the boundaries of Rappahannock County, later Richmond County. He also owned 1198 acres of land in Lancaster County purchased from Thomas Madison, his will dated 7-31-1706 was proved in Richmond County 7-7-1709. It names children; John, William, and Susanna White. Richard White married (1) Audrey _____ who signed the deed of her husband Richard White of north Farnum Parish, Rappahannock County (Later Richmond) to John Wagner on 11-2-1670. He married (2) Sarah _____, who survived him and was named in the will. His son William White lived in Richmond County. His wife Katherine joined him in 1725 in a deed to Anthony Sydnor. Susanna White married a Mr. Hobson. Thomas White married (1) Eleanor Rogers. She married (2) Edwin Conway. Thomas White was named second in his father's will ; he was executor although he lived in Lancaster County. His will dated 10-3-1706, proved 7-7-1708, mentions his wife and names brother William White, sons Richard, Isaac, both under 21 at the time of the will. (From Vol 7, Richmond County.) Isaac White second son of Thomas White, was under age on 2-4-1721 when John Rogers was appointed his guardian on 6-1-1724. Isaac White of Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County sold to Robert Mitchell 150 acres of land, part of tract of 1198 acres granted to Thomas Madison and by him conveyed to Isaac White who inherited through his father Thomas White. At this time he had no wife living. Isaac White married (1) Mary Ann Ewell 10-11-1723, who died prior to 1734. Isaac White most likely had issue by his first wife Mary Ann and among their children was probably Elisha White, later of St. Paul's Parish, Hanover County, whose sons were William, John, and Samuel White of Lunenburg. (More later about Elisha White.) One of these was doubtless the father of John White who was married in Charlotte County on Oct. 1, 1790 to Elizabeth Mosely, and died prior to Dec 12, 1825 leaving Elizabeth, wife, and chidlren: Rawley, Francis, Mary, Martha, Samuel, Julie(s), Lucy, John Barrett Elizabeth (wife of Thomas B. Marshall) and Anne (wife of Richard Gaines) White. Isaac White married (2) Catherine Lawson. In 1754 Isaact White and wife Catherine of Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County sold part of the Madison land to the same Robert Mitchell. Isaac White removed his family from Lancaster to Cumberland, or some other County, south of the James (perhaps Henrico) about the time his brother-in-law Adcock Hobson moved with his family to Cumberland in 1760. The children of Isaac White and Catherine (who married Hale), Eleanor (who married Nash.) and another daughter who married a Mr. West. |
