Notes for JOSEPH ROGERS:

Per Files by Clarence in Linda Grinnell letter to me :

"Spence's " The Congregation on Rocky River" is the standard history of the church.  . . . . Joseph, Moses and Seth Rodgers are listed together.  Another early history of the church, entitled, " A Historical Sketch of Rocky River Church from 1775 to 1875" by Rev. Jos. B. Mack, D. D., states that Joseph Rogers was the first child born in the Rocky River settlement, and that he was the son of JOHN ROGERS, the first settler.  Every historian who has ever written about this section also states that, and there is nothing to dispute it, there is no documentary evidence.  There is, however, strong circumstantial evidence.   When John Rogers died without leaving a will in Mecklenburg County in 1781 or 1782 . . Joseph Rogers was appointed his administrator.  That is logical, since the oldest son seems to have usually filled the role.  Cabarrus County was a part of Mecklenburg at that time, not being established til 1792."

Per Tina Rogers Beller Files :  Old Bethpage Cemetery list I  found in Stanly Co. NC library under Rogers files :

The will of son Joseph White Rogers dated July 27, 1842 is the source of much of the connections of the children of Joseph Rogers and Isabell White. In this will he names his sister "Fan (Fanny) McKinley".

Joseph deeds property to sons Moses and John in 1789 and refered to them as his sons. Their property joined his, and was on both sides of three Mile Branch, which is the northern part of Cabarrus County. Three Mile Branch flowed into Great Cold Water Creek and then into Rocky River. Joseph also deeded property to Joseph, Jr.

Joseph died in 1829 leaving a will which was destroyed in a courthouse fire but court minutes indicate that Joseph Rogers (Jr.) was the executor fo the will. William and Moses had already died by this time and John had moved to TN. In deed Book 15, page 458 in the Cabarrus County Registry.. a reference to the property of Jos. Rogers, deceasd, which was ?conveyed by the last will & Testament of the said Joseph Rogers dec?d to the lawful heirs of William O. Rogers dec?d.?

Joseph owned approximately 1000 acres of property in Township 4, Cabarrus co. NC where Kannapolis and Cannon Mills are located according to notes of Clarence in a letter to a descendant of Jospeh's daughter Isabella who married an Anderson. (I suspect this is Clarence Horton who wrote many books about Cabarrus co. NC)

Source of Joseph's birth and death dates and burial location are from "Heritage of Rowan County North Carolina" Cemetery Book, Vol. IV1989 by Genealogy Society of North Carolina (Age 94 years, 7 months).

I find a John W. Rogers who married Margaret Albright Aug. 14, 1832 in Rowan co. NC and a Joseph Rogers was the bondsman. I would imagine that this is a grandson of the elder Joseph who died in 1829. Is the bondsman our Joseph White Rogers son of Joseph?

Notes for JOHN ROGERS:

Per Tina Rogers Beller Files :

1840 BEDFORD CO. TN CENSUS :   ( 3 John Rogers are listed but the closest to JOHN ROGERS age is this one ) :

JOHN ROGERS     0101000010   0001011

1 male age of 5 and under 10   ( b. bet. 1830 and 1835 )

1 male age of 15 and under 20  ( b. bet. 1820 and 1825 )

1 male age of 60 and under 70 ( John Rogers b. bet. 1770-1780 by this census )

1 female age 10 and under 15  ( b. bet. 1825 - 1830 )

1 female age 30 and under 40   ( b. bet. 1800-1810 )

1 female age 40 and under 50 ( Margaret Russell b. bet. 1790- 1800 by this census )

On same census and next to JOHN ROGERS is a THOMAS COOK age of 30 and under 40 with two sons of age under 5; and one female of age 5 and under 10 ; and one female of age 20 and under 30 ( Mrs. Thomas Cook ? ).

John Rogers and Margareth were found in the 1850 Bedford County, TN census. He was age 83 (born NC)and Margaret was 57 (born NC). Also in the household was Effy Anderson, age 46 (born NC)and Susan J. Rogers, age 6/12.

Comment by Clarence on the will of Joseph Rogers b. 1735 who d. 1829 NC, - "  However, the court minutes indicate that Joseph Rogers was the executor of the will.  That would be consistant, since Moses and John, the older brothers, were already dead in the case of Moses or gone to Tennessee in the case of JOHN "

1850 BEDFORD CO. TN Census showed that other families perhaps associated with JOHN ROGERS were living nearby such as in HH 89 are WILLIAM and ELDENDER BEATY and family and living in HH 91 is JESSE MORRIS age 45 born NC and wife VIOLET;  and living in HH 92 is SIDNEY ROGERS ( male ) age 25 born TN and wife SARAH J. age 25 born TN, along with their children listed who are :   WILLIAM W. ROGERS age 6 , b. TN;  MARGARET E. ROGERS age 5 born TN;  Sarah Ann Rogers age 3 born TN;  Zella Jane Rogers age 1 month born TN;  and living in same ROGERS 92 household is a ZELLA A. PEARSON age 19 born TN; and baby EFFY COOK age 1 born TN.  Could the COOK family be related in some way to the JOHN ROGERS family of Bedford Co. TN ?

1850 Bedford Co. TN Census :   Civil Dist. 11 enumerated on 14th day of Dec. 1850 :

HH 90-90   JOHN ROGERS age 80 M  Farmer   Born NC

Margaret            age 57 F                 Born NC

Effie Anderson   age 46 F                 Born NC

Effie Anderson was referred to possibly as "LAME EFFIE" and mentioned in the statement by Clarence below :

"To return to JOSEPH ROGERS, eldest son of John Rogers, the first settler:  We know that he had sons Moses and John, because he deeded property to them in 1789, and referred to them as his sons.   Their property joined his, and was on both sides of three Mile Branch, which is the northern part of Cabarrus County.  Three Mile Branch flowed into Great Cold Water Creek and then into Rocky River.  Joseph also deeded property to Joseph, Jr. and later this turns out to be JOSEPH WHITE ROGERS.   Joseph Rogers, the elder, died in 1829, leaving a will.  Unfortunately this was destroyed when . . courthouse burned.  However, the court minutes indicate that Joseph Rogers was the executor of the will.  That would be consistant, since Moses and John, the older brothers, were already dead in the case of Moses or gone to Tennessee in the case of JOHN.  Joseph W ( hite ) Rogers, apparently the son of JOSEPH ROGERS, son of JOHN ROGERS the first settler, died in 1843 and is buried at Bethpage Methodist along with his mother and father, and brother Moses.  Fortunately, his will dated July 27, 1842, was not lost in the fire. . . Two bequests of particular interest . . . giving to his " brother JOHN ROGERS fifty dollars also to his lame daughter EFFY I give fifty dollars to them . . . "  . . ." Eighthly,  he gives to his sister Isabella Anderson ten dollars to her, . . ."  In Cabarrus deed Book 15 at page 286, we find a power of attorney from BEDFORD COUNTY, TENNESSEE, appointing JOHN RUSSELL attorney-in-fact for JOHN ROGERS , EFFY ( E. ROGERS, DAVID ( + ) ANDERSON, and ISABELLA ( X ) ANDERSON, to "receive from us from one JNO. ROGERS & JAMES GRAHAM or any other person having possession of or liable for the same a Legacy bequeathed to us by JOS. W. ROGERS now deceased late of the County of Cabarrus & State of North Carolina.  "    The document is dated November 2, 1844.   . . . in same Book at page 282, is a document from Hickman County, Tennssee appointing ABNER HIGGINS guardian for JOSEPH H. HIGGINS, date September 2, 1844, apparently so that he could receive his bequest from JOSEPH W. ROGERS. DAVID ANDERSON was on the bond with one MICHAEL HIGGINS.   . . .In the 1850 Bedford County Census, I find JOHN ROGERS ( 90/90 ) aged 83, having been born in NORTH CAROLINA, with MARGARET aged 57, and EFFIE ANDERSON aged 46.  that is bound to be same EFFY of the Will.  Not far away is DAVID ANDERSON ( 77/77) aged 79, with property worth $2000, having been born in North Carolina.   Next to him ( 76/76 ) is JOSEPH ANDERSON, aged 45, and his wife, Lucinda, aged 40, both born in NORTH CAROLINA.  Surely he is a son of ISABELLA ?  I don't have any idea what happened to the ANDERSONS then, . . . I notice how close the ROGERS and ANDERSON families were during all the time in NORTH CAROLINA.   We may find some connection in PENNSYLVANIA.   . . "  - CLARENCE.

Per a letter sent to me by Linda Grinnell and with excerpts by a man named Clarence who stated following on David Anderson :

In Cabarrus Deed Book 15 at page 286, we find a power of attorney from Bedford County, Tennessee, appointing John Russell attorney-in-fact9 for John Rogers, Effy (E) Rogers, David (+) Anderson, and Isabella (x) Anderson, to "receive for us from one Jno Rogers & James Graham or any other person having possession of or liable for the same a Legacy bequeathed to us by Jos. W. Rogers now deceased late of the County of Cabarrus & State of North Carolina."  The document is dated November 2, 1844.  Interestingly enough, in the same Book at page 282, is a document from Hickman County, Tennessee, appointing Abner Higgins guardian for Joseph H. Higgins, dated September 2, 1844, apparently so that he could receive his bequest from Joseph W. Rogers.  David Anderson was on the bond with one Michael Higgins.

**************************************

Per data on files by Les Tate David Anderson b. 29 Dec. 1772 would be age 48 in 1820 Census

Williams.  Heirs named were Mary (Polly) Anderson, Robert's widow; his children: Robert B., William C., Joseph. C. in 1790 offers little help.  Richard Anderson lived along the border of Maury and  Hickman County; David in Bedford Count.  My great grandmother's name was Isabella White Anderson; she inherited property in Maury County  from Richard Anderson via the terms of his will dated in the 1850's from memory her parents William and Jane Anderson lived near his parents in Bedford County and are buried in the Crowell-Anderson Cemetery near Halls' Mill in that county."
