List of the Colonial Soldiers of Virginia
Preface.

In August, 1755, the assembly voted $40,000 for the war, and the governor and council decided to increase the Virginia regiment to sixteen companies of 1,500 men. At the same time Washington was placed in command with ranking of colonel; his chief subordinates were Lieutenant-Colonel Adam Stephen and Major Andrew Lewis, both excellent soldiers. “Peyton Randolph raised a volunteer company of one hundred gentlemen, who, however, proved quite unfit for the frontier service.” The Virginia regiment in 1756 numbered about 1,400 men. It was composed partly of militia drafted from the eastern counties, but much more largely of the class of restless, unemployed men who hang on every advancing frontier. Bradley has seen fit to speak disparagingly of this force and of the public spirit in Virginia, but somewhat unjustly: “Washington, with a thousand raw soldiers, low-class Southern white men, to whom authority was specially odious, was struggling in defense of a frontier nearly four hundred miles in length. Virginia, it should be said, was notoriously touchy on the subject of her boundaries. Her white population at this time was larger than that of the Transvaal Boers to day, who have placed some forty or fifty thousand men in the field. It was three times that of Natal, who has sent out to war [p.8] many thousands of her best sons upon no greater provocation. Her frontier counties were swimming in blood and ringing with passionate appeals for succor. It was an occasion, one would have supposed, when the sons of her numerous aristocracy and still more numerous yeomanry would have responded in thousands to the call of their own harried people at least, if not to that of the mother country. They were an outdoor people, bread to the use of horse and gun, and cherished a sort of pride that, without the martial ingredient, seems to lack significance. The existence of slavery made even their time very much their own. The fear of a slave insurrection might influence numbers available for distant adventure; but one looks in vain among the squires and yeomanry of the Southern colonies for the faintest spark, at this burning period, of the spirit that one would particularly expect in such a class. The natural fire of youth and love of glory and adventure, to say nothing of patriotic sentiment, that was so conspicuously present with after generations of the same breed, seems in this one to have been almost an unknown quantity. Considerably less than half the officers who commanded the few hundred ill-paid mercenaries that so tortured Washington belonged to the gentry class, and represented their total contribution to the defense of the province, and the long and fierce struggle with France.
