Return to Other White's

Note from Mike White:|
This is a Detailed Study of William White of Union County South Carolina
we have not made a connection to our White's of Union Co. However,
their is a life time of Research here, and some of these White's mentioned
may be ours, such as Samuel White... Franklin and Hart Co GA.  Some
of the Research is in error, I believe, and debatable for sure. But definitely,
worth posting here, for its detail, and possibilities of helping our White line
,
and future reserach, and offering theories into the many unknown's...

Many other items appraised. William Philips, John ?, Abel White
May 9, 1809 Court ordered that Mary White have Letter of Administration on the estate of William White.

It is believed that this William descends from the Whites that were from Ireland. The following info was found in book entitled "Ancestral Records and Portraits - Colonial Dames of America, Chapter 1, Vol. 1.

"The Colonists, Moses White, Mary Campbell his wife and their son William came from the North of Ireland to Lancaster County, PA and were the progenitors of the White family of Lancaster County, S.C. Originally from the west of Scotland, the family was one of many with similar descent who came to America not far from the middle of the eighteenth century. They were all strict Presbyterians. Moses White had a patent of land in Lancaster County, PA in 1741.

As Early as 1722 one Hugh White lived in Lancaster County and was a man of note. There were also Moses, John, and Alexander White. Other White families moved south about 1750; some remained in North Carolina, and others passed over into South Carolina. Lancaster County, in this State, received its name because of the many settlers who came from the same county in Pennsylvania. The upper part of this southern state owed much to the White family, who were most active in regard to its settlement and who proved to be excellent men of affairs and noteworthy in their day. (this found in William and Mary College Quar., Vol. VI, p52).

So far as is known, there were six children of Moses White, all sons, William, Joseph, Moses, Henry, Hugh, and Stephen, the youngest, who went to the western part of North Carolina and had a large family.

The eldest child of the family, William White, had a grant to land in Lancaster County, which he sold in 1749. He then moved to the Waxhaws, S.C. and died there (later Lancaster County, S.C.). He married Sarah ?. Ramsey's History of South Carolina says she died in 1806 at the age of ninety. But Governor Stephen Decatur Miller, who was born in 1788(grandson) says that she lived until he was about ten years of age. Issue:

Jean, married Major Robert Crawford of Revolutionary fame.
Hugh married Mary, the daughter of Joseph White.
Margaret married Jesse Miller and they were the parents of Governor Stephen
Decatur Miller.
Isabella married Andrew Foster
Christiana married James Crawford, Jr. a first cousin of Andrew Jackson who persuaded them to move to Tennessee where they left a large family.
John married first Nancy Ann Foster, second Margaret Harper
Moses married Jane Miller
???daughter married Captain John McClure killed at Hanging Rock, 178076

HISTORY OF WHITE NAME:
The White line is well known back to the first century in Wales. It is believed that the name of White was first given to a Robert White, born abt.1215 A.D. He was so named because of the color of his skin or hair. The Whites began a migration from Wales to Scotland, Ireland, and England in the early 13th century. Our possible ancestry is as follows:

Urban
There is no record of any birth parents.
Born abt.55 Wales
Died abt. 101 Wales
There is no record of any marriage
Tehvant ap Urban
There is no record of any birth mother. This continues on in Wales until we meet Sir Walter White, first known person to bear the name of White. He was knighted by Henry II abt. 1245. There is no record of his mother. Next we find Thomas White, b. abt. 1240 Wales, then Robertus White b. abt. 1290 - next Willemus White, b. abt. 1290 England. Jonannes White, b. abt. 1338 England, Johannes White, b. abt. 1368 England, Robert White b. abt. 1390 England, John White b. abt. 1422 England. At some point in time some of the Whites migrated to Scotland and Ireland.

Your compiler paid Professional Genealogist Brent Holcomb of S.C. to help find the parents of this William White. After several hours of research, Brent stated he could not identify William's parents but he believes his ancestor John White is a brother of our William White. There is a good possibility that they descend from the Pennsylvania Whites who moved to the WaxHaw Dist. of S.C. and settled Lancaster, S.C.

Indian War Records: Widow's pension claimant Jerusha Chandler age 94, widow of Ambrose Chandler, P.O. Box Carrollton, Carroll Co., Ga. alleged that Ambrose was a Private in Capt. Cleveland's Company and that he voluntered to assist in the removal of the Cherokee Indians. Jerusha's file submited November 16, 1884 was rejected Jan. 14, 1885. Widow's service pension #3551 states that Ambrose died April 9, 1868, and that he was about 60 years of age. Judge of Carroll County, Ga. states that Jerusha Chandler appeared before him and stated that her husband served in the Cherokee Indian War and enlisted at Franklin Co. Ga. Carnesville under the name Ambrose Chandler as a Private in Company commanded by Capt. Wm. Cleaveland in regiment of Ga., Militia. commanded by Col. Turk.. She thinks on or about 15 of May 1838 for term of three months, and was discharged at New Town; she thinks on 15 Sept. 1838. At the time of entering the service claimed her said husband was 20 or 25 years of age, five feet 11 inches with dark gray eyes, black hair, dark complexion, occupation a farmer. I don't know what county he was born in but he was born in North Carolina. After leaving the service he resided at Franklin Co., Ga 15 years with his father Richard, and at Carroll Co., Ga. 23 years. She married him 4 May 1827 at Franklin Co., Ga. by Charles Jenkins, JP, under the name Jerusha White. G. W. Merrell, Atty: If the above named claiment has gone to heaven from which is said no citizen of the far better land, she no longer cares for Uncle Sam's gold so it only remains for her friends to be told that her claim is rejected and filed with the Interior Bureau of Pensions, Washington, D.C. Oct. 20, 1894

Gentlemen, the above named claimant's family and friends should be advised that her husband's name could not be found on the rolls of Captain Cleveland's Company and that no further action can be taken until the correct service of Ambrose Chandler can be furnished.

William W. Chandler fought for the Confederate Army. He died in

Information from Muster Roll of Co., F, 19th REgiment Georgia Volunteer
Infantry Army of Tennessee CSA, Carroll County, Ga. Guards. He was
buried in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, Winchester, Va.
William married Lucy, daughter of Miles Holloway and Jane Cash.

Susan shows that a daughter, named Margaret, was born after William's death in 1862. She shows date of 1863 only. Of course, Lucy could have been pregnant before William left for Winchester, Va. in the Civil War. Editor's note: I show a Margaret born in 1856. Were there two Margarets?

Lucy is found living in the house of her son-in-law Thomas Patterson on the 1900 Carroll Co., Ga. census. Her age is incorrect but the census states she was born in January.

Notes for Lucy Campbell Holloway:
On the 1850 census W. W. Chandler is living next door to Lucy's parents, Solomon Holloway. Will have to prove lineage here since marriage record gives no clues to either's parentage and Lucy married before the 1850 cenus was taken. Only circumstantial evidence proves that Lucy is the daughter of Solomon Miles Holloway and Jane Cash.

Lucy died while living with daughter Margaret and son-in-law Thomas J. Patterson in the Smithfield District of Carroll Co.,Ga..

James Benjamin McClain is found on the 1900 Cleburne County, Alabama census, page 271 as follows:
He is shown on this census as being born in July 1856. Census states that Martha Ann is the mother of six children (4 living). Relatives state the son named "Penn" on this census is actually a female.

House 186/187 McLain, James W M b. July 1856 Georgia (parents born in Georgia) Married 15 years, Farmer (age 43)
Mothy(Martha) Ann, wife, W. F. b. July 1861 (age 38), born in Georgia,both parents born in Georgia

Cassie Belle, daughter, b. December 1898 (age 1)
Owens, Annie Jane Mobley, Mother-in-law, b. Aug. 1835 (age 64), born in Georgia

Benjamin's first wife, Mary "Molly" died of thyphoid fever in 1884 in Cleburne, Co., Al. (Abernathy District). She left him with 4 children under the age of six.

James Benjamin's second wife Martha Ann Mobley is found here on the 1900 census with her mother, Annie Jane first married Joseph Chapel Mobley and then married an Owens (was widowed twice). James married six times. The third wife was Sally Wiggans (mar. 5/9/1914), the fourth wife was Louisana Strength (mar. 8/20/1921), the fifth wife was Sarah Alice Weathington Boatright (mar. bef.1928). Laura Ann Yarbrough Hall) sixth wife signed his death certificate. He had children by the first two wives only.

Information obtained June 30, 2003 in an interview with Cousin Estelle Boatright Messer, age 94 (a granddaughter of J. B. McClain) is as follows: She states that one of her grandfather's wives was her widowed Grandmother Boatright whose name was Sarah Alice Weathington She said that her grandfather McClain married sisters, but that she did not know their names. After the first sister died, he then married her older sister (90 years old and ailing) who was living with them because he could not live with her and take care of her without gossip. She had nobody to take care of her and no place to move to, so he married her. More research will have to be done to put the wives in the correct order of marriage. She stated that he was a smart, kind old man. He always had a garden and planted fruit and nut trees(as well as grape vines) every place he lived.

James Benjaman was the son of Josiah Marion McClain, b. 1840 DeKalb Co., Ga. and Julia Ann America King, b, 17 Mar. 1841, Carroll County, Ga. married 1857 in Carroll County, Ga.

In 1914 James, a farmer, was a registered voter in the Turkey Creek Dist. 1240, Carroll County, Ga. James fathered four children by his first wife and seven by his second wife and ended up marrying six times. He was widowed four times, divorced once, and left the last wife a widow. His first wife was Mary "Molly"Chandler (died), 2nd was Martha Ann Mobley (died), (proven). The dates of the other marriages not known for sure nor the order. 3rd, was Sally Wiggans (died)?, 4th was Louisanna Strength (died)?, fifth was Boatright lady (divorced), and sixth was Laura Jane Yarbrough.

Sources: 1. James Benjamin McClain family info & copy of bible info - contributed to the Neva Lomason Library Special Collections,Carrollton, GA by John W. Reese, Jr. and Virginia Tuttle. 2. "Our Smith/King Families" book by McBride, censuses and marriage records. No mention of more than the first two wives in this bible.

Your compiler remembers her great grandfather McClain. She was nine years old when he died. He bought a small farm (about 100 acres with a house on it) in the Ridgegrove Community in Lee County, AL. near his daughter Laura, her grandmother. He sold this house and land to his daughter Laura Clements in 1934. He and his daughter lived about 1/3 mile apart when he bought the farm. Laura and her husband were renting their land from the Sanford family of Opelika. The cause of death of his wives varied. His first wife died of typhoid fever leaving four little children, the oldest was Laura, about six years of age. James Benjamin (called Jim) was about 6' tall, brown eyes, (brown curly hair before it turned gray), olive complexion), large bone structure but thin. He was probably quite handsome in his youth. His daughter Laura, my grandmother, looked a lot like him, with olive complexion, dark wavy hair, and brown eyes (she was about 5'7" tall) with nice facial features.

The following letter was written to John Reese of Utah in 1976 by Enoch Smith, Rt. 4, Box 155, Heflin, Ala. It seems John had asked for some church records and Enoch was researching for John. I cite this information because it definitely ties in our James Benjamin McClain to the McLain/McClains of Acworth, and Cobb County, Ga. Records of Harmony Primitive Baptist Church, Cleburne Co., Al (formerly Carroll Co): "James McClaine joined Nov. 28, 1879; Julia Ann McClain joined 1894; John Free joined Aug. 10, 1885; sister M. J. Free by acceptance of grace; receivied J. J. McClaine by letter; received brother J. H. McClain by acceptance of grace (baptized July 18, 1895). Brother J. B. McClaine served as a delegate to our sister church at (Mars Hill, Acworth, Ga. in 1896.
(Note: Jim's grandfather Josiah McLain and many other McLains are buried at this Mars Hill cemetery located in Cobb County between Acworth and Marietta.)

Dear Brother Reese sorry I have not found more on these names you requested information on but our old Records Book is in bad shape from 1860 to 1920. It has faded out until I just cannot read it............You might find more information at Poplar Springs Church in Carroll Co., Ga. that might be your best bet, so I will hush by asking you say pray for me and mine. My wife and myself has retired and we are 70 years old and enjoying life pretty good. Good night. My membership is at Harmony Church."

James B. McClain is found on the 1880 Cleburne Co., Al. census (Abernathy Dist.), NA Film 1254008, Film T9-0008, Page 190D as follows:

James B. McClain, age 22, b. Ga.
Mary F. G. McClain, wife, age 27, b. Ga
Laura J. E. McClain, dau. age 2, b. Ga.
Lucy A. A., dau. age 3 months, b. AL.

In the same area is Mary "Molly" Chandler McClain's sister Margaret who is married to Thomas J. Patison (or Patterson). Many of the Chandlers moved to Cleburne County, Al. before 1880.

Note: Life was very hard for my gr. granfather McClain. First, his father goes off to the Civil War then he deserts his first wife and four children. Both his grandfather Benjamin King and William Chandler died in the Civil War. The families had to struggle to survive. Neither of the grandfathers were wealthy. There are no records of them owning slaves. It is thought that Benjamin was a "tanner" as well as farmer. Records show they were religious people and attended church. Only one of every 10 families in the South owned slaves.

He married, and for a few years was happy it seems. The wife died leaving him with 4 small children to care for. Naturally, he found another wife as quickly as possible. By the second wife he had nine more children. These also probably were happy years; then the second wife died and he was left with minor children to raise again, but the older children evidently helped him. We do not know the dates of his other marriages.

Your compiler has not tried to research the ancestors of any of James B. McClain's wives except his first, great grandmother of this compiler (Mary F.J. Chandler McClain).. She has sent many hours trying to find the immigrant ancestor this J. B.McClain.

He appears on a receipt roll for clothing all the way through Jan. 31, 1864. He was wounded at Malvern Hill on July 1, 1862. Hospital records state that he was wounded in the side. Notes for William Pattterson Coffey:
According to "The Heritage of Cleburne County, Alabama" (Page 187-188), he worked for Southern Railroad doing rockwork on tunnels between Birmingham,AL and Atlanta, GA. While working at a Saw Mill, a boiler exploded that broke his leg and blinded him in one eye, therefore rendering him incapicated for general labor, When Will and Georgia married, they started out with only a sick of Cornmeal and Salt. The only farming implement they had was a socbohoe (used for cookign hoe cakes or gradening). They lived primitively for several months until they built their first log cabin with a chimney made from sticks and mud. The furniture was handmade. The cabin later burned and they built another one. (Submitted by Junior Shealy of Waco, GA).

According to Jack Coffey, John's son, he was officially a farmer, but also had dealings with moonshiners.

Notes for Thomas Hiram King:
Thomas was the son of Benjamin King and Mary Burson.
Thomas Hiram King enlisted on March 4, 1862 in Carrollton, GA, as a Private in Co. "H", 41st Reg. GA, Volunteer Infantry, also known as "The Wool Hat Boys" with his father Benjamin King. He was wounded, permanently disabled and captured at Vicksburg, MS, on 4 Jul 1863, paroled there July 16, 1863. Roll for 31 December 1863, last on file, shows him absent and sick. Pension records show he contracted rhematism July 1863 and was furloughed for thirty days which extended until the close of the war. An affidavit submitted by William McMichale as a witness for Matilda contained the data that he served with Thomas and that Thomas did not come back into service after Vicksburg fell. He stayed at home because he was disabled from rheumatism and that when he had seen Thomas, he was on crutches. He never recovered. On June 15 1900, they were enumerated in Smithfield, Carroll County, Ga. Thomas died in 1904 and his wife Matilda died in 1910.

Matilda's pension application (dated March 2, 1904) stated that she lived in Barge, Carroll County, Ga. and that she had a weak heart, rheumatism, general disability and feebleness. She lived with her children who were supporting her. Her only property was household goods worth about $30-$40. It was signed March 2, 1904. Her witnesses were: William McMichael and her physicians W.W. and W. L. Fitts.

The Pension records show that Matilda was to get a pension of $60 per year, from 1906 to 1910 Carroll County Cemetery records show her death as August 18, 1905. The 1900 census records list 10 of 12 children, all born in Carroll County.
Charity Matilda Chandler was the daughter of Ambrose and Jerusha White Chandler and the sister of William W. Chandler who died in the Civil War in Winchester, Virginia. She also lost her father-in-law, Benjamin King, in the war. The Chandlers and Kings of Carroll County, Ga. were hit hard by the Civil War.

Virginia,
I have studied your White genealogy and mostly what I’m looking for is a connection to Georgia.

The estate papers I have on Simpson’s out of Union County, SC are:

William T. Simpson, Esq. estate settled 1814, Legatees:

Mary Davidson, late wife of Thomas Davidson, her issue: Margaret S. Harris wife of Pleasant Harris and Mary Patton, wife of George Patton. Paid Christopher Golightly as guardian of Miss Davidson.
Isabella Means wife of James Means, Sr.
Nancy Mayes, wife of Joseph Mayes (Mays)

No will in this estate. No White’s at the estate sale. There is mention of tax paid on land in Georgia.
A note I have in my files and I didn’t write down where I copied it from (but it was a book and not the internet). March 1815, Court of Equity at Union Court House for Pinckney Equity District, Mary L. Davison Petition ordered Josh (Joseph?) Mays be apptd guardian to care and manage property from death of Uncle, William T. Simpson, Esq. From the estate papers it appears that Mr. Simpson was an attorney and did business in Spartanburg County as well.

Estate of Edmond/Edward Simpson, Sr. 1835
Will names: my four youngest children: Samuel, William, Edmond Simpson, Jr., (who died 1836) and Polly Campbell (James). Appraisers: Joel Dean, Jesse Dodd, Jason Norman. My child Bird Simpson’s two eldest sons. Samuel Simpson, Executor. He (Edmond/Edward) to be buried in family graveyard.

Samuel Simpson deceased 1797. This is Simpson who intermarried with Nancy Bobo. A Robert White was an appraiser for this estate. 1799 accounts against estate: Samuel Farror fee against Docr White. Notes due Thomas White. Rec’d of John Murrell for rent 1799. Due from Estate of Samuel Simpson and paid off: Drury Murrell, John Jackson, Ralph Jackson, and Joseph Jackson. Estate closed in 1815. He was a blacksmith. His children: Delilah Simpson Bobo Willis, Susanna Simpson, Sophia Simpson Richardson Powers, Barrum Bobo, guardian to John and Samuel Simpson. Paid Elizabeth Ray for clothing legatees, Paid to Hosea Holcomb for schooling John Simpson. Administration Bonds for Wm Alexander, George Gordon and John Bogan.

Chester County wills 1802
Mary McClure—I give and bequeath to my grand daughter Mary White daughter to my son James McClure one Negro girl named Fanny.

Will of William Simpson Camden District 1784
Wife: Mary
Children:
James Simpson, his son William, and James’ daughters Mary Simpson, Jane Simpson, Elizabeth Simpson
William Simpson, his daughter Sarah Simpson
Grand Daughter Martha Adams, daughter of Thomas Adams
Grand son John Simpson
To my grandson William Simpson son of James Simpson, I give and bequeath a track of land containing two hundred acres situate on Rocky Creek on the East side of the Cuttaba River. The Camden District covered a large area in 1784.

Are you aware that the SC Dept of Archives and History has put on line images of deeds and wills for the early years? A great source.

For me, I’m wondering how my William Simpson’s daughter, Mary J.(this may be Jane) Mariah Simpson, married William Martin Graham from Forsyth County, Georgia. William’s father is David and his mother, Sarah (LNU). William M. and Mary married February 23, 1871. David Graham and a Martin Graham are found in 1840 and 1850 Hall County, GA censuses. David Graham is in Floyd County in 1860 and Forsyth County in 1870. Martin Graham had a son named James David Graham who married Georgia Chandler (second wife) and she may have been married previously. His first wife was Virginia Nuckolls of Whitfield County, Georgia. James D. Graham and Georgia are both buried in Whitfield County and they were in this county from 1901 until their deaths. My Grgrgrandfather and his son, Richard A. Simpson were in Whitfield County in 1900. So, it makes you think that there were Simpson relatives in Georgia or Graham relatives in South Carolina.

At any rate, I’ll keep looking. It just may be that we are connected and just haven’t found it yet. Your Mary Simpson could be my William Simpson’s aunt. I will keep your information and follow up if I ever find anything and I hope you will do the same.
