Hi Mike,

Thanks for getting in touch.  I am researching the White family of Edgefield
Dist, in hopes to find out info. on a *William White marriage to one Syntha ?
who has a female Susannah Coursey living in the HH.  in 1850 & 1860.  My
grandfather was Odell Coursey of Johnston, Edgefield Co, SC and I am working on
his line.  Circumstancial evidence leads me to believe that he is connected to
the Hill/White/McFatrick line thru his g-grandfather Uel Coursey b. 1818.  I
cannot prove the parents of Uel, but the name is a Hill family name, and one
Susannah Hill m. William Coursey per her father's will.  I find them in the
minutes of the Red Bank Baptist Church, (now in Saluda Co., SC) in 1820, when
William is expelled from the church for refusing to come before the church and
confessing the sin of having a dance.  I lose him after an 1824 deed, but find
Susannah as head of HH in 1830. 1840 then with the White family in 1850 & 1960.

The Whites that I have amassed in the search so far are:

Many of these connections are made based on various wills I have collected, and
I will be glad to send a genealogy report with notes and sources as an
attachment if you would like.  [We update our Norton anti-virus every Sat. am]

Blumer White, gen 1 above may be desc from:

Descendants of [John White]

 1   [John WHITE]   d: January 26, 1726/27 in VA
.  +[ELIZABETH]
..... 2   [Valentine White] [ Daniel WHITE]

Notes for John:  Isle of Wight County, VA:  "Wills and Administrations of Isle
of Wight County, VA, 1647-1800"

"WHITE, John: Leg. Son VALENTINE WHITE; wife Elizabeth WHITE, to John
CARPENTER; daughter Millicent; daughter Jane; daughter Mary; son William WHITE;
son Jonathan. Exs: wife and son Valentine WHITE. d. January 23, 1726/27."

Dates don't really work for this to be a true linage.  If Blumer White of
Edgefield Dist. SC was born ca 1760 (know before 1765 per 1810 census - over
45)
His Father (Valentine) would be born ca 25 years before that - assume that
Valentine is oldest since he was Co. ex. with mother Elizabeth)
So we place Valentine being born ca 1735. - can't be the son of the John who
died 1726.
If connected directly, we have a generation missing, or Blumer was a good bit
older that born ca 1760.

Notes for Valentine/Daniel :

Isle of Wight County, VA: "Wills and Administrations of Isle of Wight County,
VA, 1647-1800"
"WHITE, John: Leg. Son VALENTINE WHITE; wife Elizabeth WHITE, to John
CARPENTER; daughter Millicent; daughter Jane; daughter Mary; son William WHITE;
son Jonathan. Exs: wife and son Valentine WHITE. D. January 23, 1726/27."

Do not have any idea if this is the Valentine linage that connects to Blumer.
William White could be the connection and he named a son Valentine.  So this is
pure speculation until we get to Blumer's connections.

Audrey Pool writes: It looks to me like Blumer WHITE was the s/o Daniel WHITE,
with a brother Valentine WHITE.
Will Book 6, Brunswick County, VA: By: Dr. Stephen E. Bradley, Jr
"Account 1794:  1798 for the estate of Daniel WHITE, dec'd.
Named: John H. BASS, William BETTY, John DRUMMOND, Jr, John DRUMMOND, Sr, Levi

John WHITE, Sarah WHITE, Stephen WHITE, Valentine WHITE, William WHITE, Ludwell
WORSHAM."

------ this is just info. that I have downloaded and not followed up on.

Do you see any connection to your Union Co. Whites.  Other Edgefield families
were found in Spartenburg & Union co. before they are in Edgefield, having
floated down the Saluda River or followed trails down.

I don't know where the Coursey's came from, but possibly connect to the line in
MD than came to America in 1653.  But I am a long way from working on that
connetion.  I need to find the missing connection between Uel/Ewell born in
1818 and one of the 4 Coursey heads of HH in the 1790 census.  One of them, I
figure is probably the grandfather of Uel, and several are Rev. War Vets, plus
a deceased brother William Coursey whose brother Capt. James received his
indent for his deceased brother on February 09, 1786.  I don't know anything
about him.

So.... that the who and why of my interest in the White family.  Hopefully you
might have some answers for me

Again, thanks for replying.  Look forward to hearing from you.

1743-1843, they arrived in SC about 1787 in Old 96th, settling in Union Co SC
1788.  Robert's 1st wife was Mildred Whitehead.  I only have theories as to
where they came from in NC, from old family letters.  I pretty much have most
of his 12 children of Robert & Milly mapped out to some extent. They lived in
Union and Spartanburg SC.  Would be interested in hearing about your possible
connection to the White line.

Part Two:

I am copying several generations into this email.  It includes all my notes and
sources, and the first several generation are notes that I have saved, and
connections are purely speculative.  It is very possible that Blumer White, b.
1765 could be a brother or cousin of your William b. 1762.  But of course, with
William as a name, that is difficult to prove, esp. when there is another or
several others close to the same age.  Researching famlies with common names,
A white is pretty common is almost as difficult as my Smith and Jones lines.  I
was a Smith, married a Jones and am researching both lines!

Anyway, here is what I have.  If you see someone interesting, let me know.  I
have more desc., but of those in SC.

Do NOT have any idea if this is the Valentine linage that connects to Blumer.

Notes for SARAH JANE BROOKS:

Notes for SARA JANE BROOKS from the file of LaMarr Quarles Brooks
<lbrooks@innova.net>, March 2002

1804 Sarah White was listed in her father's-Robert Brooks, Sr.- will in
Mecklenberg County, VA

1807, Jan. 1: Heirs of Sarah White, deceased were involved in a Chancery Suit
in Mecklenburg County, VA concerning the division of slaves in the estate of
Robert Brooks, Sr. Sarah left children

1809, Oct. 9 the children of Blumer White, who married another daughter of now
deceased, was involved in a second Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg, VA.

Robert Brooks' second wife-Agigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit against her
step-children for allotment of her widow's dower.

Helen Harrell sent the following info. from the web site
<http://www.rcasey.net/brooks/brostart.htm>

SARAH BROOKS (1.6) is the daughter of Robert Brooks, Sr. and Brambly Brooks. In
1804, Sarah White was listed in her father's will in Mecklenburg County,
Virginia. On January 1, 1807, "the heirs of Sarah White, deceased" were
involved in a Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County, Virginia concerning the
division of slaves in the estate of Robert Brooks, Sr., Mary's father. On
October 9, 1809, "the children of Blumer White who married another daughter of
now deceased" were involved in a second Chancery Suit in Mecklenburg County,
Virginia. Robert's second wife, Abigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit
against her step-children for allotment of her widow's dower. According to
these suits, it is obvious that Sarah (Brooks) White died between 1804 and 1807
and left children.

There are many references to Blumer White's who lived in Edgefield County,
South Carolina which are very likely the husband of Sarah (Brooks) White. The
1810 and 1820 census records enumerate Blumer White in Edgefield County, South
Carolina. A will of Blumer White was signed on October 28, 1824 and was
probated on March 14, 1825 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. The will lists
wife: Joannah; sons: Blumer, Daniel, Abner, Jonathan; daughters: Rebecca,
Sarah, Tabitha, Martha; heirs of deceased children: Stephen White, John White,
Dolanlum (?) White, Elizabeth Harrison (all deceased). In 1840, another will of
a Blumer White was probated in Edgfield County, South Carolina. It is likely
that this was the son of Blumer White whose will was probated in 1825 listing a
son: Blumer.

Notes for JOANNA [BROOKS]:

The Notes for SARA JANE BROOKS from the file of LaMarr Quarles Brooks
<lbrooks@innova.net>, March 2002, seem to indicate that Blumer White married
second, another daughter of deceased father, Robert Brooks Sr.

Robert Brooks' second wife-Agigail (Ellis) Brooks, had brought suit against her
step-children for allotment of her widow's dower.

CENSUS: 1830 Edgefield Co. p. 218 White, Stephen age 30<40 with 1 female aged
30<40 and 1f 5<10. ASSUMPTION that this is the same as the Stephen, son of
Blumer White. They are on the same page in the census.

The way I read the will of Blumer White, Stephen was listed as deceased.
However, there is one Stephen White in the 1850 census who's age seems to fit
here. Who is he?

this to be Margaret McFatrick Welsh White's son by her first marriage.]

Living next door is William White and Cyntha with Susan Coursey (62), Uel (10)
and Catherine Coursey (9)

Richard Fischer states that William White is a son of Abner White, and connects
them back to Blumer White, therefore the Blumer White next door is his brother,
since their father died in 1824.

Deed of gift from John McFatrick to John M. White and Abner V. White occurred
in 1824. He deeded them items purchased from a sale of Abner White. However,
Abner is still shown in the 1850 census. Why the sale, or is there another
Abner White?

WORK ON THE MCFATRICK WILLS MAY CHANGE SOME OF THE ABOVE. CHECK ON THIS ONGOING

The following deed posted on SC-Genealogy site: Note the names Bloomer White
and Benjamin Tutt. Does this connected the Tutt/Coursey marriage to the
White/Coursey line. They seem to all have been in the same area. John Lyon was
a neighbor of Jesse Hill, who was the father of Susannah Hill Coursey....Am I
just reaching for straws??? Elizabeth Coursey widow of Captain James Coursey
(d. 1799) married James Tutt, son of Benjamin Tutt ca 1803. James and Elizabeth
had a son William who brought a suit against estate of James Tutt in 1824.

Notes for SYNTHIA [COURSEY]:

Parentage of Syntha as a Coursey is SPECULATION, based on the1830 -
1860 census, relationships with the White/Coursey/Hill family lines. Synthia
then possibly d/o Susannah and William Coursey and the Susan living with she
and her husband work for this to be Susannah Coursey, wife/widow of William
Coursey, and possibly the two youngest children or maybe 2 grandchildren. Or
Could Synthia possibly be the mother of the children in the household and
previouly married to a Coursey, and Susannah is her former mother-in-law?

Richard Fischer who is researching the Hill/White connections supports my
assumptions that Susannah Coursey is the mother of Syntha White based on the
relationships he has found in the White family and information from
Revolutionary War records of John McFatrick and widow pension of his widow
Elizabeth Sullivan. Their daughter married Abner White and their daughter
married 2) Col. John Hill. The Abner White, William White, Susannah Coursey,
Wiley Coursey families are found living near each other in the 1840-1850
census. William White married to Syntha is living next door to Col. John Hill
and Elizabeth White Welch Hill. Just seems too much circumstancial evidence to
ignore the very stong possiblity that these families are connected.

Notes for ABNER V. WHITE:

Deed of gift from John McFatrick to John M. White and Abner V. White occurred
in 1824. It states "....in consideration of the natural love and affection
which he hath and beareth unto his two Grandsons John McFatrick White and Abney
V. White..." proving the relationship between the young men and their
grandfather. However, w/o the birthdate of this Abner V. white, I cannot be
sure this is the right one.

cemetery and a description of the stone. He sites McCormick County Cemeteries,
prepared by the McCormick Co. Historical Society, 1987.

Location: From highway 378, turn right on S-33-42 traveling east from
McCormick. Follow this road. The cemetery is located to the left near the power
line just before the White Town Road is reached.

A large flat stone bears the name of Blumer White, died Dec. 1839, and Margaret
Y. Tellis White, died May 1, 1826. Married March 1812.

There are indications of other graves. It is known that Blumer White married a
2nd time, Oct 10, 1826, Elizabeth Evans. There were children by both wives.
Family placed a stone there, but it was removed by vandals.
