From Mike White:

Some of the places and names in the lineage, may someday
prove to be of our Robert White Sr's linesage, of Union Co Sc.

I've copied Faye's note (s) verbatim below.

Hi Mike,

I'm searching records as always on our White line(s) and. as always I have questions about possible connections to yours.

I think I've updated you but, if not, we've found our Vincent's father and know the name of his grandfather and at least 2 uncles & 1 aunt....AND possibly either another son or brother of his grandfather, which is the one that might interest you.

There is a William White who witnessed either the 1760 deeds in which our Robert White SR gave land to his sons Samuel & JOHN (Vincent's dad) & a son in law, John Tuten or the 1764 deed (both in Craven Co) when John sold the land that his father deeded him.  We found another land transfer to another son in law, Thomas Davis who m. Mary White (who by the way, had a daughter who had 3 out of wedlock kids by a Jacob RHODES....either of your intermarried Rhodes come from the Robeson Co, NC area because this daughter finally married an Oswald and ended up in GA).  However, we have NOT found any land transfers between Robert SR and this William White, which could mean he's a brother and not a son.

1)  The William White who d. 1807....do you have any idea when he showed up in SC?

2)  Ever heard of a John Plowman White?  I ask because he's got an interesting travel history (and you have an intermarried Plowman, I noticed).  He was the grandson of Capt John Plowman thru his daughter Mary (m. a John White, I think).  He is referred to as "infant son, John Plowman White, of Mary White" in the 1717-1721 probate records of John Plowman.

By the 1740's, he's mentioned in at least one deed as John Plowman White, trapper OF CRAVEN Co and there are several transactions for him in the early Dobbs Co, NC.  What is really interesting is that he shows up in GRANVILLE CO by at least the 1746 tax list. He also ended up in .........EDGEFIELD CO, SC.  Who knows maybe he's your Robert's dad!

Here's what I have on him, so far:

WHALTONE, THOMAS. Chowan County.

May 8, 1719. June 8, 1719. Wife: ANNE, of King and Queen County in Virginia. All estate is left to wife and seven children, not named. Executor: JOHN PLOWMAN. Witnesses: AB. COKBURNE, JOHN WHITE, MARY WHITE. Proven before Governor CHARLES EDEN. Impression of what appears to be cherub with wings on seal.

PLOWMAN, JOHN.  Chowan County.

July 1, 1721. August 4, 1721. Legatees: JOHN PLOWMAN WHITE (plantation and seven slaves), THOMAS LOVICK, MARY WHITE, JOHN PLOWMAN ASHLEY, GOVERNOR EDEN, JOHN LOVICK, NICHOLAS CRISP, ISAAC HILL (last-named three persons appointed Executors). Witnesses: JAMES CASTELLAW, JAS. WINRIGHT, J. CABB. Proven before CHARLES EDEN.

2)  Did you know that there was a Stephen White mentioned as the Dobbs Co registar as early as 1738?  I also found that there was a Stephen & William White in Granville Co but don't know if they are the same ones that I found in Dobbs Co.

I believe the elder Wm [Moseley] disappears around 1773 from Edgefield Co. at
which point he has sold his 300 ac headright on Nobles (Dry) Creek to
James Adams (see below). The 300 ac headright indicates that this Wm
had 4 children (George, Benj. Robt D and Selah) and not likely to be
his son who m. Sarah Muse and who was b. ~1753 according to his RW
record, who also qualified for a headright (see below). This is the
land that his bro Robert registered on his behalf in December 1772.
(Robt also registered on Wm Jr's behalf at the same time) The sale
is the last certain record I can find for him. His chlldren remained
in the area so he may have died but maybe not.

Mike,

I found this deed info on your website and am wondering if you think this Robert White of Dobbs Co is connected to your line?  I ask because I fairly certain that he is my Vincent White's uncle, based on additional deed (not listed on your site)info we have on Vincent's father John and his grandfather, Robert White SR.  According to his Obit, this Robert White (Jr) would have been born about 1736 and he died in the early 1800's.

Robert White JR witnessed the sale of my Vincent's father, John White's land to Jeremiah Prichard, in 1764.  The last record we have of Vincent's grandfather, Robert White SR is in 1760, when he deeded land to sons,  John White, Robert White JR and son in law, John Tuten/Tuton (daughter may be, Hannah, as that was wife's name, listed in John Tuten's Will).

The Craven Co deeds below that are dated in the 1740's would have to be Robert White Sr's, (the grandfather of my Vincent White's).  Based on birth years of his known children (1730's up to 1740's) we believe this Robert SR was likely born from 1690 up to possibly as late as 1710.  Robert White SR, Robert White JR and a William White are listed as early as in the 1750's on a militia list for Craven Co. and there are a William & Samuel White on other records in Craven Co, that are too early to be the White's that came from MD (Samuel, Benjamin & Whichcote/Whichcoat White)

Since we are fairly certain that this Robert White is our Robert White's son, Robert JR, is it possible that your Robert may come from the William White?  I suspect that William White is either a brother (along with a Samuel White) or both William & Samuel may be also sons of Robert SR (haven't found enough records to tie down their age/birth years).

Robert SR's children were born in the 1730-1740's, however, if William is a brother, he could be your Robert's father....which might account for why we seem to always run into our two families, a lot!

Do you think this William Whitehead might be yours, as well?
Faye

Note added 10/22/2013:

note on John Plowman White by Jack White:
jackhwhite120@verizon.net

"I had researched John Plowman White of Bute Co, who migrated there from Chowan and Craven County around 1746. Turns out he later migrated down to Edgefield Co, SC. Much of his Bute Co plantation ended up in the hands of a William White -- most likely the son of Lt. Richard White who died at the Battle of the Monangahela during the French and Indian War. That William is one of my possible candidates as the father of Cajabeth White, although not the most likely one."

******************************************
ROBERT WHITE, FATHER OF CAJABETH?

Theory proposed by: Jack White
jackhwhite120@verizon.net

A review of the available records in Mecklenburg Co, VA and Granville, Bute and Warren Co, NC, indicates that it is plausible that the father of Cajabeth (aka Cadbreth, Cade or Cader) White, may have been Robert White of Granville and Mecklenburg Counties.

Cajabeth first appears in the old Bute Co tax list of 1766, residing with his brother William.  No father is listed, perhaps because the father was already exempt from poll taxes due to age.  Throughout the 1770s and 1780s Cajabeth is shown in numerous Bute Co documents, apparently as head of his own household, living along the northern edge of modern day Warren Co in the vicinity of the Bush, Jackson and Mothershead families.  He signs the 1776 Oath of Allegiance for Bute Co and the 1779 petition to form Warren Co.  By 1790, he is listed in the census as head of household, with one additional male over 16, one male under 16, eight females and three slaves.  I believe these additional males are the oldest son, Robert, and his younger son, John.  One of the women counted is most likely Ann Bush White, Robert’s wife.  (No Robert White is shown as head of his own household in this geographic area, supporting the view that he was living with his father.)

The records for Granville Co prior to 1766 – when Cajabeth was living in Bute Co – are spotty;  but among the records available I have not found a Robert White.  Thus, it is possible that he was living in Bute Co with his sons, Cajabeth and William.  By 1778, however, a Robert White is found in Granville Co taking the Oath of Allegiance, residing in the Country Line District, which abutted Mecklenburg Co, VA.  (There is also an Isaac White – a name that reappears several generations later in our White line.)  There is no Robert listed in the 1790 census for Granville Co.  I believe it is possible that sometime between 1778 and 1790, this Robert moved out of the county.

In fact, beginning in 1782, a Robert White can be found living in adjacent Mecklenburg Co, VA.  He appears regularly in the tax records through 1790, residing in the lower district of Mecklenburg Co (in those years in which there are two districts).  From 1786 through 1791 there is a second Robert White as well, residing in the upper district.  After 1791, no Robert White is found in either district of Mecklenburg Co.  But in 1795 – and only in that year – Cajabeth is listed in the lower district of Mecklenburg Co.  In that same year, Cajabeth purchases land in Rockingham Co and resides there until his death around 1800, when he bequeaths his farm to Robert (presumably the eldest son).

It is worth noting as well that in 1782 there are several families with the last name Culbreath or Cutbreath.  Could this surname have been adopted as a first name for our man Cadbreth?  And could it provide further evidence of Mecklenburg Co roots?

Can we make a case from this record that Cajabeth’s father was Robert?  It certainly seems plausible.  We can start with the fact that Cajabeth named his oldest son Robert.  Second, we know that a Robert was living in the northern part of Granville Co in 1778, while Cajabeth was living to the east along Six Pound Creek in the northern part of adjacent Bute (later Warren) Co.  (Vance County was formed much later from parts of Granville and Warren Counties.  At this point it isn’t clear to me where in present-day Granville or Vance Counties the “Country Line District” would have fallen.)  A Robert is living in the southern part of Mecklenburg Co by 1782, the earliest tax list that I have, in the company of several families named Culbreath or Cutbreath.  Finally, Cajabeth briefly moves into the southern half of Mecklenburg Co in 1795, several years after Robert ceases to appear in the county’s records.  The delay in arriving in the county may have been due to the probate process for Robert’s estate.  Unfortunately, no wills, estate papers, or deeds for Robert have been located in the records of Mecklenburg Co.

If this conjecture is correct, then we can track Robert living in Bute County in 1766, moving to Granville Co by 1778, and then north into Mecklenburg Co by 1782.  Cajabeth would have been living along Six Pound Creek until he moved to Mecklenburg in 1795 and then on to Rockingham Co.  Cajabeth’s sons, Robert and John, may have followed him briefly into Mecklenburg Co, but in any event appear to have been living in Rockingham and Caswell Co at Cajabeth’s death.

One final note.  After 1766 it is very difficult to locate Cajabeth’s brother, William.  It was a very common name among the Whites (notably, Robert much less so).  On the other hand, there is a William White residing in Mecklenburg Co from 1784 until his apparent death in 1804.  (A  William White Jr. appears in 1789.)  Could this have been Cajabeth’s brother, William? We know only that he had at least two other sons, Larkin and Edward, and that he owned from three to six slaves during these years.
