RETURN TO ^ Wounded at the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern Mar 8th, 1862 Provided
by: Confederate Pension # 22870 (1913)
Henry joined the Texas Confederate Army in the fall of 1861. He had been in Texas 8 years, was unmarried and 25 years old. He was in Company E, Crumps Battalion-Calvary. He was wounded in the Boston Mountains, Ark while retreating from the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern, also known as the Battle of Pea Ridge. This was considered the biggest battle west of the Mississippi. The battle lasted three days-Thursday, Friday and Saturday-March 6,7 & 8, 1862. The Confederates were led by Gen Earl Van Dorn and Stering "Pap" Price against Federal troops led by Gen. Samuel Curtis. During the battle, the Confederates lost both Brig. Generals Benjamin McCulloch and James McQueen McIntosh. It was the last major offensive of the South in the Trans-Mississippi until 1864. Out of 14,000 Confederate troops, 600 were killed or wounded. Henry was one of the wounded. [on the following day, Mar. 9,
1862, The Monitor and Merrimack fought its battle]. Because of his wound (?), Henry remained at Sulphur Springs, Ark. for about four months and was discharged sometime in July, 1862. He married his wife Julia a year and a half later in January, 1864. Fifty-one years afer being discharged, he applied for his pension in August of 1913 and was allowed a pension starting in December, 1913 at the age of 76. This was two years after his wife's death in 1911. He died at the age of 84, so he only drew his pension for eight years. At his pension hearing, the State and County Assessor, R.M. Johnson, assessed Henry's property as being a homestead worth $890 and other property, personal or real of both at $330. |
|||
On the night of March 6, Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn set out to outflank the Union position near Pea Ridge, dividing his army into two columns. Learning of Van Dorn's approach, the Federals marched north to meet his advance on March 7. This movement--compounded by the killing of two generals, Brig. Gen. Ben McCulloch and Brig. Gen. James McQueen McIntosh, and the capture of their ranking colonel--halted the Rebel attack. Van Dorn led a second column to meet the Federals in the Elkhorn Tavern and Tanyard area. By nightfall, the Confederates controlled Elkhorn Tavern and Telegraph Road. The next day, Maj. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis, having regrouped and consolidated his army, counterattacked near the tavern and, by successfully employing his artillery, slowly forced the Rebels back. Running short of ammunition, Van Dorn abandoned the battlefield. The Union controlled Missouri for the next two years. |
