HISTORICAL NOTES:

11th MS Infantry Regiment

11th in Battle

This regiment was ordered to Corinth in April, 1861, and the regiment was organized May 4. Being transported to Lynchburg, Va., the regiment was there mustered in the provisional army for one year by Major Clay May 13, and on the 19th they arrived at Harper's Ferry.

The Inspector-General reported from Harper's Ferry May 23 that the Mississippians were clamoring for rifles in place of the old muskets they had. The Eleventh, he said, took pride in its appearance and was soldierly.

In the organization of the Army of the Shenandoah, under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, the Eleventh and Second, with the Fourth Alabama and First Tennessee, constituted Gen. B. E. Bee's brigade, the other brigades being commanded by Thomas J. Jackson, of Virginia, Barrow of Georgia and Elzey of Maryland. With the army they fell back to Winchester June 15, when Patterson's Federal army crossed the Potomac from Pennsylvania, and on July 18 began the movement to Manassas to support Beauregard against the Federal army advancing from Washington. Two companies of the Eleventh, A and F, under Lieutenant-Colonel Liddell, arrived at Manassas with General Johnston, about noon of the 20th, and on the next morning they were ordered out, with the Second and other regiments, under General Bee, the first to advance to the relief of the left flank of the army, which was being demoralized by an unexpected attack from the Federal army. They went into battle gallantly, but were also overwhelmed by great odds, after a heroic struggle, and forced to fall back behind the line established in their rear by General Jackson. Casualties -- killed, 7; wounded, 21.

Subsequently Liddell was in command of the regiment and the brigade was commanded by General Whiting. General Lee wrote July 25, 1861, that he regarded the brigade as a Mississippi brigade, commanded by a Mississippian.

The six miles march from Winchester at double quick that the regiment made to reach the field of Manassas disabled many. The winter was spent in camp near Dumfries, a few miles from the Evansport batteries on the Potomac. In February the men began enlisting for the war and taking furloughs. They moved to Fredericksburg March 8, and thence to the vicinity of Yorktown, where the regiment was reorganized and officers elected. They left the Yorktown lines May 4, and next day Whiting's division, including his brigade and Hood's Texans, marched thirty-five miles to oppose Franklin's corps, which Hood and Stuart drove back and prevented from interfering with the withdrawal of Johnston's army. There are no official reports covering the action of the regiment at Seven Pines, May 31 and June 1. They supported the Third Alabama in an attack on the Fifty-second New York June 1, and finally took the front line and suffered a heavy loss, which does not appear in the reports. Company E had 2 killed and 8 wounded, 2 of whom were captured. Company K had 3 killed, 11 wounded.

In June they accompanied Whiting's division in the movement to Staunton to reinforce Jackson in the valley, soon returning with Jackson to Ashland to attack McClellan.

In the seven days' battles before Richmond the brigade, under Col. E. M. Law, was in Whiting's division with Hood's Texas brigade. The division marched as the advance of Jackson's army (see Second Regiment) and later in the evening of June 27, in the battle of Gaines' Mill, made the famous charge across the ravine held by the Federal infantry and artillery, sweeping the enemy away and winning the victory. (No regimental reports, see Second Regiment for synopsis of Whiting's report.) "Colonel Liddell led his distinguished regiment to the close of the action," Whiting wrote. The loss of the Eleventh was 18 killed, 142 wounded, 3 missing, the most severe of any in the division except the Fourth Texas. The retreating Federal army was overtaken at White Oak swamp June 30, where the regiment was under fire. At Malvern Hill, July 1, under artillery fire, they lost 1 killed and 20 wounded.

In the second Manassas campaign Hood marched his division to Freeman's ford, August 22, driving a Federal force across the Rappahannock, next to Waterloo ford, and then with the main body of Longstreet's army through Thoroughfare gap to the relief of Jackson's army in battle with Pope. The Eleventh was in the charge at sunset August 29, when the brigade captured one piece of artillery, three stands of colors and 100 prisoners. Next day, in the battle of Manassas Plains, the brigade advanced to Groveton in support of a battery, under heavy artillery fire, and afterwards took part in the fight near Chinn's house, "fighting gallantly and incurring heavy loss and at night resting on our most advanced line." The regimental casualties of the two days were 22 killed and 87 wounded, the heaviest of the brigade. In the march through Maryland, September, 1862, Hood's division turned about and countermarched to meet the pursuing enemy at Boonsboro gap in the mountains. Hood ordered his Texas brigade and Law's brigade "to move forward with bayonets fixed, which they did with their accustomed gallantry, driving the enemy and regaining all our lost ground." As the rear guard of the army they marched thence to Sharpsburg and were stationed near the Dunker church, where Hood was attacked on the evening of the 16th, but repulsed the enemy. "During the engagement the brave and efficient Col. P. F. Liddell fell, mortally wounded." After this fight the men had their first meal for three days, except that they had a half ration of beef one day and the green corn along the road. Next morning (17th) Hood was called early into the battle. He wrote: "I soon became engaged with an immense force of the enemy, consisting of not less than two corps of their army. It was here that I witnessed the most terrible clash of arms, by far, that has occurred during the war. The two little giant brigades of this division wrestled with this mighty force, losing hundreds of their gallant officers and men, but driving the enemy from his position and forcing him to abandon his guns on our left." They were fighting at right angles to the general line of battle, and Law was so exposed that the division was retired to the church, which they held until relieved by McLaws.

Lieutenant-Colonel S. F. Butler was wounded and Major T. S. Evans killed in command of the regiment. Total casualties of the regiment: 8 killed, 96 wounded. The color bearer was killed and the regimental flag, which had been presented by the government November 6, was lost.

After the return to the' Shenandoah valley the Second and Eleventh were ordered to Richmond to join the Mississippi brigade under Gen. Joseph R. Davis. They arrived there in November, and in December the brigade was sent to Goldsboro, N. C., in which vicinity it operated against a Federal force; left there for Blackwater bridge in February, 1863; was in the entrenched line at Suffolk during the siege; left the Blackwater camp for Fredericksburg June 3; was attached to Heth's division, A. P. Hill's corps; started on the Pennsylvania campaign June 15.

The Eleventh did not have a part in the battle of July 1, near Gettysburg, being left as a guard for the division wagon train near Cashtown, Pa. On July 3 it participated in the famous charge up the slope of Cemetery ridge, on the extreme left of the Confederate line. The entire division, under command of Pettigrew, in which the Eleventh was included, moved steadily up the slope, closing up the ranks as they were thinned by the tremendous storm of shot and shell, and finally were at the stone wall behind which the Federal infantry was posted. But there the musketry fire was so murderous that "any further effort to carry the position was hopeless, and there was nothing left but to retire to the position originally held, which was done in more or less confusion." Two men were killed and twenty-one wounded in Davis' brigade by the Federal artillery as they stood in line before the movement was begun. In the charge all the field officers of the brigade were killed or wounded. The regimental casualties were reported as 32 killed, 170 wounded. Company histories reveal the following facts:

Company K took thirty-eight into the charge. Captain Bird was killed while cheering his men over the stone fence. Lieutenant Stanford took his place and fell wounded. Some of the men scaled the fence and were captured. At roll call that evening seven answered. Lieutenant Baker, Company C, surrendered about a dozen men at the fence. Lieutenant Baker, Company A, was wounded beyond the fence and surrendered with his squad of men. Company E took in thirty-nine men, of whom fifteen were killed and twenty-one wounded, including Captain Halbert and two Lieutenants killed and one Lieutenant wounded. Corporal Morgan was the only man able for duty after the charge. Company D took in fifty-five men and all but ten were killed or wounded and captured.

From Gettysburg they marched to Hagerstown and were in line of battle several .days, thence to Falling Waters, crossing the Potomac; Bunker Hill, Culpepper, Orange Courthouse, and from there across the Rappahannock in the campaign resulting in the battle of Bristoe Station, where the regiment had four men wounded. In December they marched to Mine Run and intrenched in line of battle. They were in winter quarters at Orange Courthouse until May 4, when they moved into the battle of the Wilderness May 5. The Eleventh led the advance of Heth's division, moving down the plank road deployed in line, pushed back the Federal cavalry for several miles, and encountered the Blue infantry toward the middle of the evening. This opened the battle of the Wilderness. Heth's division was at one time almost entirely surrounded, but Anderson's division arrived on the field and relieved the pressure. On the morning of the 6th the enemy renewed the battle, while Kershaw's division of Longstreet's corps was relieving Heth's, which was held as a reserve that day. Some confusion was caused, but the main part of Davis' brigade, under Colonel Stone, remained on the line and took a very active part in the severe battle that followed. (Sketch by D. C. Love, also see Second Regiment.)

After the movement to Spottsylvania the regiment fought at Talley's Mill May 10, where Colonel Green was mortally wounded. He died May 15. The Lamar Rifles, as brigade skirmishers, under Captain Nelms, were particularly distinguished in this battle.

At the battle of May 12, Spottsylvania Courthouse, the brigade repulsed an attack, being posted to the right of the Bloody Angle. One hundred and fifty men of the brigade were sent out in front under Captain Nelms as a skirmish line that day, and of these 120 were killed or wounded. There was considerable loss at Bethesda Church, June 2-3, on the Cold Harbor line, where the brigade remained until after the battle of the Crater, July 30, when they were moved to that part of the Petersburg line.

March 25, 1865, the skirmish line of Davis' brigade on the Petersburg line, was attacked and some of the men captured. The brigade went into the battle which lasted several hours. The Eleventh was only sixty-four strong and lost a considerable proportion of that number. LieutenantColonel Reynolds lost his right arm and Captain Nelms was severely wounded. During the night of April 1st the regiment, under command of Major Shannon, moved to the right and took position near Hatcher’s Run, where next day, the Federal army having broken the line, the remnant of the regiment was almost surrounded by vast numbers. Shannon led his men to the run and disbanded the command. Frank Hope, color bearer, tore the flag into shreds, tied them to the pole and threw it in the stream. Some escaped by swimming, among them Major J. J. Evans of the staff of General Davis, but most surrendered. (Sketch by D. C. Love.)

A Brief Overview of the 15th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment

The 15th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment mustered into Confederate service in September 1861, at Lightwood Knot Springs near Columbia. They had their baptism by fire at Fort Wagner on Hilton Head Island during the battle of Port Royal Sound on November 6, 1861.

In July 1862, the 15th South Carolina was sent to Virginia in Brigadier Thomas Drayton's Brigade. Drayton's Brigade was assigned to Major General David R. Jones' Division of Major General James Longstreet's wing of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. They fought under Drayton at Second Manassas, South Mountain and Sharpsburg.

General Robert E. Lee transferred the 15th South Carolina to Kershaw's Brigade after the battle of Sharpsburg. In Kershaw's Brigade, they fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. After the battle of Gettysburg, the 15th South Carolina and the rest of Kershaw's Brigade accompanied General James Longstreet to North Georgia and East Tennessee where they fought in the battles of Chicamauga, Knoxville, and Bean's Station.

Following the winter of 1864-65, Kershaw's men rejoined Lee's Army of Northern Virginia just in time to particpate in the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor and the siege of Petersburg, including the significant battle of First Deep Bottom near Richmond in late July 1864.

While at Petersburg in August 1864, Kershaw's Brigade and the 15th South Carolina was assigned to General Jubal Early's Army of the Shenandoah Valley. Here they fought against General Phillip Sheridan's army at Hupp's Hill and Cedar Creek, before returning to Petersburg in November 1864

In early January 1865, General Lee sent Kershaw's Brigade back to the Palmetto State to oppose General William Techumsah Sherman who had begun to move into South Carolina following his famous " march to the sea " from Atlanta to Savannah in late 1864. Kershaw's Brigade first met Sherman's Army on the Salkehatchie River in the South Carolina low country in late January 1865. The 15th South Carolina was one of the last Confederate units to evacuate Charleston on February 18, 1865. Along with the rest of Kershaw's Brigade, they fought Sherman's army in the last battles of the war at Averasboro and Bentonville, North Carolina under General Joseph E. Johnston in the Army of Tennessee. Before surrendering at Greensboro on april 26, 1865, the 15th South Carolina and Kershaw's Brigade under Brigadier General John Doby Kennedy, served as the last Confederate provost guard of the Army of Tennessee. They were responsible for guarding the remaining Southern munitions and food stores at the Greensboro railroad depot during the surrender process. The men of the 15th South Carolina participated in changing of the guard cermony with the 104th Ohio Infantry as they turned the remaining Confederate supplies in Greensboro over to Sherman's Army on May 3, 1863.

Following his famous "March to the Sea" in late 1864, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman turned his Union army away from Georgia and toward South Carolina where the Confederacy had been born almost exactly four years earlier. By early February 1865, having been re-supplied at Savannah by the Union Navy, General Sherman’s army successfully crossed the Savannah river from Georgia into South Carolina and was ready to once again go on the offensive. Sherman’s plan called for keeping the modest Confederates forces under Lieutenant General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard as confused as possible with regard to whether his vast army would march toward Columbia or Charleston.

Beauregard’s troops opposing Sherman in the South Carolina Low Country were under the command of Lt. General William J. Hardee who had been transferred to South Carolina from the Army of Tennessee. General Hardee, known as "Old Reliable," commanded approximately 12 thousand effectives consisting of mostly untested coastal artillerymen and garrison troops. To augment this scratch force, General Robert E. Lee, whose Army of Northern Virginia was under siege by General U. S. Grant’s forces at Petersburg, Virginia, sent Hardee a brigade of veteran South Carolina infantrymen. This veteran brigade of Lee’s Army had been known throughout the War as "Kershaw’s Brigade," in honor of its original commander, Brigadier General Joseph Brevard Kershaw from Camden, South Carolina. In 1865, Kershaw’s old brigade was commanded by Brigadier General John Doby Kennedy, also, of Camden.

Kershaw’s brigade, left Petersburg on January 4, 1865, and went first to Branchville, South Carolina and then to Charleston. This veteran brigade was made up entirely of regiments from South Carolina. These were the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 8th, 15th and 20th infantry regiments and the 3rd infantry battalion. The 15th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry regiment, until the battle of Gettysburg, was commanded by Colonel William Davie DeSaussure. The 15th SCVI regiment had first became known to Gen. Lee when Lee took command of the Confederate forces in South Carolina on December 8, 1861 immediately following the battle of Port Royal in which the 15th was engaged.

Once back in South Carolina, Kershaw’s veterans were placed under the command of Major General Lafayette McLaws. The men of Kershaw’s brigade were glad to serve once again under General McLaws who had been their commanding officer when he headed a division in General James Longstreet’s First Army Corps of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. Although Longstreet and McLaws were West Point classmates and had been good friends, they had parted ways when Longstreet had McLaws court martialed for alleged incompetence while two divisions of the First Corps were in East Tennessee. Following his court martial, General McLaws had been assigned duty with the Confederate Army in Augusta, Georgia.

Kershaw’s veteran brigade of South Carolinians had seen service in the major battles of the Army of Northern Virginia including Sharpsburg, Maryland, Fredericksburg, Virginia and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In addition, Kershaw’s South Carolina brigade had been with Lt. General James Longstreet in the battles of Chicamauga, Ga. and Knoxville, Tennessee in late 1863. Returning to Virginia following their service with the Army of Tennessee, Kershaw’s brigade was generally given credit for saving Lee’s army at the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6 and again at Spotsylvania Court House on May 8 in 1864 during Grant’s Overland campaign to capture the Confederate Capital of Richmond. After serving with Major General Jubal Early’s army in the Shenandoah Valley during the Fall of 1864, Kershaw’s brigade returned to the trenches around Petersburg.

By February 2, Sherman’s entire army of 60 thousand men had crossed the Savannah River. McLaw’s troops, including Kershaw’s brigade was driven from the Salkehatchie River on February 8. Under General Kennedy, Kershaw’s brigade returned to Charleston on the Charleston and Savannah railroad. The first night the brigade was back in the city, hundreds of barrels of whiskey were rolled out in the street. The barrel heads were knocked out and the whiskey which was not "confiscated" by the soldiers was allowed to run in the streets to keep it from falling into the hands of the enemy.

With parts of Sherman’s Army headed their way, Kershaw’s brigade took the cars of the South Carolina Railroad to George’s Station [Now St. George, SC ] and then marched toward Walterboro until they reached the bridge across the Edisto River. From there, the brigade returned to Charleston. By February 11, 1865, the Yankees had driven in the Confederate pickets on James Island, south of Charleston. An additional eighteen Union steamers were spotted off the bar at Charleston and 16 transports were seen in Bull’s Bay, north of Charleston. After 4 years of being under siege, Union sea and land forces were closing in on Charleston.

General W. J. Hardee wrote on Feb 12, "I have just returned from Orangeburg and Branchville. It is believed the enemy is in heavy force between the Capler [Cipher] and South Fork of Edisto, near Orangeburg and about it. It is not certain whether enemy intend going to Columbia or to Charleston. Enemy not in force near Branchville or below. All quiet on water front this morning."

On February 15, with Sherman’s army in heavy force near Orangeburg and concerned that the Northeastern Railroad leading from Charleston to Florence and Cheraw would be cut, Gen. Beauregard ordered Gen. Hardee to evacuate Charleston. Gen. Hardee being temporarily ill, the responsibility for evacuating what was left of the Confederate army from Charleston fell to Gen. McLaws.

On the night of the 17th and morning of the 18th, Charleston was evacuated. Gen. McLaws issued the following orders from General Beauregard: "One brigade of Wright’s Division, in St. Paul’s Parish, to move by railroad to Monk’s Corner, then march by Sandy Run to the Santee; the other portion of Wright’s Division to move by Summerville to St. Stephens. The troops in Christ Church Parish to go by steamer to St. Stephens. The troops from James Island to move out by Ashley’s Ferry and follow the Northeastern railroad, to be followed in turn by all the troops in the city. McLaws was to withdraw from Sherman’s front at Branchville and follow on to St. Stephens."

It was during the last phases of the evacuation of the Confederate Army from Charleston, that a terrible tragedy befell the civilian population. Lt. Moses Lipscomb Wood, (see image at left) of Company F, the 15th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry regiment, "The Thicketty Rifles" reported in his "War Record": "I was in Charleston on the night before and the morning it was evacuated, and was put in charge of a detail of about 75 men to load what cars [of the Northeastern Railroad] we could ahead of us. We had not been out of the depot long before the women and children rushed in to see what they could get. The depot was filled with powder and explosives and caught on fire and was blown up"causing the most pitiful sight I saw during the war. Women and children, about 250 , were killed and wounded, and some were carried out by where [we]were in line on the streets, with their clothing burned off and badly mutilated."

A week later, The Fayetteville Telegraph stated that "an officer who arrived here direct from SC last night gives us some interesting items concerning the evacuation of Charleston. The evacuation took place on Friday night [February 17], and the city was occupied by about 500 Yankees who landed in small boats about 12 o’clock on Saturday. All the cotton (some 6,000 bales) and the shipping was destroyed, and the guns spiked by the military authorities. The city is now but little more than a heap of ruins. When the Yankees entered, nearly half of it [Charleston] was in ashes and a terrible fire was still raging. The fire originated in two ways. A quantity of damaged powder had been left at the depot of the Northeastern Railroad Company, among a number of other articles. A crowd of negroes and citizens of the lower class had assembled for the purpose of pillage. While there, a boy in sport fired a small quantity of loose powder, which, communicating with that in the boxes, ignited the whole, causing a terrible explosion, with considerable loss of life. The immense depot building was blown to atoms, and the fire spread rapidly to the adjoining houses. It burned with great rapidity, and extended as far up on King street as the Soldiers Home. About the same time a fire broke out in another portion of the city, caused by the burning of the Savannah bridge [over the Ashley River]. This fire was also very destructive, and the two combined extended from river to river. Numerous other fires also occurred in different parts of the city, said to have been the work of the citizens themselves. All this occurred before the occupation of the city by the Yankees. Our forces under Gen. Hardee have gone in the right direction. It is not permissible to state where they are, but they will be found where they are most needed."

General Hardee reported on Sunday, Feb 19 from Kingstree that "Charleston was successfully evacuated Friday night and Saturday morning."

All the troops under Gen. McLaws, at Four Hole Swamp, and along the coast were to rendezvous at St. Stephen’s on the Santee. Although some of Hardee’s troops got to ride the trains out of Charleston, most of them had to march 40 miles to St. Stephen’s Depot. With feet hurting, the exhausted soldiers began arriving at St. Stephen’s on February 20. Lt. Col. Thomas B. Roy, Gen. Hardee’s adjutant, noted "a great many desertions from the command on the march from Charleston. Some artillery companies almost disbanded by desertions." The hope was that Hardee’s small army could make a junction with the Army of Tennessee in front of Sherman at Chester, SC, or, if that was not possible, to continue to Chesterfield or Cheraw.

The first trainload of Hardee’s troops of McLaws’ division, arrived at Kingstree in Williamsburg County on the afternoon of February 21. The temptation to desert the Confederate army as they neared their homes must have been particularly great for the men of the 15th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment’s Company G, the "Williamsburg Rifles." This company had been originally organized by Captain Joseph B. Chandler at Indian Town in Williamsburg County in the early Fall of 1861.

President Jefferson Davis wrote the following to Gen. Beauregard (Image - right) on February 22: "I have directed Gen. J. E. Johnston to assume command of the Southern Army and you to duty with him. Together, I feel assured you will beat back Sherman." That same day, McLaws’ troops took the cars of the Northeastern Railroad as far as Florence, and arrived at Cheraw the following day. The trains carrying McLaws’ troops were crowded to overflowing, and some of the men from Kershaw’s old brigade "spent a miserable night riding on top of the cars in a driving rain."

From Cheraw, South Carolina, Kershaw’s men marched into North Carolina where they fought with Sherman’s army at Averysboro and Bentonville. Kershaw’s old brigade was surrendered as part of the Army of Tennessee by General Joseph E. Johnston to General William Tecumseh Sherman on April 26, 1865 at Bennett’s farm house near Durham, North Carolina.

Private in Turners Battery of Smith's Regiment of Artillery
Wife Mary filed several Civil War Widows applications in Alabama:
# 688, 10121, 1281, 1097, 1059, 759 (filed under Turner's Battery)

"The Southern Cross of Honor"

Smith’s-Turner’s artillery battery operated for the entire war. The unit, raised in Clarke County, Mississippi, was originally intended to be an infantry company, but was consolidated with another company and turned into artillery. The two amalgamated units were commanded by Captain Melancthon Smith, a native of Alabama who had served in the United States army and attended West Point.

The artillery battery served with Leonidas Polk’s Army of the Mississippi , which operated along the Mississippi River. By 1862, Polk’s army, including Smith’s-Turner’s Battery, was called upon for every major Civil War campaign in the west, including the battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Stone’s River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Atlanta, and Mobile. Captain Smith prior to the 1862 Kentucky Campaign was promoted to chief of artillery for the division, and William B. Turner became acting battery commander. Smith later became the chief of artillery for Hardee’s Corps during the Atlanta Campaign, with the rank of Colonel. Smith’s-Turner’s Artillery Battery ended the war in Alabama, with Smith as overall artillery commander, and Turner in command of the battery.

Some Regiment History Battle Reports

Stone's River after battle report:

Reports of Lieut. William B. Turner, Smith's Mississippi battery.

  SHELBYVILLE, TENN., January 14, 1863.
MAJ.: In accordance with Special Orders, No. 2, issued from
headquarters artillery, Polk's corps, Army of Tennessee, I have the
honor to report that at the battle of Stone's River the company sustained
a loss of 1 private killed (Henry Sellers) and 1 sergeant, 1 corporal, and
2 privates wounded, 4 horses killed and 6 wounded. No damage done
  to carriages or caissons.

The battery was engaged four different times on Wednesday, 31st
ultimo, with the batteries of the enemy and firing on their infantry,
averaging about half an hour to each engagement.

We were engaged some six times on Friday, 2d instant. We drove back
a line of infantry on Wednesday, and on Friday, in conjunction with
Carnes' and Stanford's batteries, were engaged with several of the
enemy's batteries, and drove back a column of their infantry. The effect
of our two light 12-pounders was particularly noticeable. That evening
after sundown, Capt. Stanford, acting chief of artillery, seeing a line
of the enemy's infantry approaching, ordered me to open fire, which I
did upon them with my two light 12-pounder guns, firing several round
and repulsing the enemy. We fired during the two days we were
engaged some 800 rounds, composed of solid shot, shell, spherical case,
and canister. We noticed nothing inefficient in regard to the projectiles
of the Bormann fuses. We were compelled to use a few of the paper
fuses. They proved inefficient, not preserving the range. We never used
our adjustable sights, it not being necessary.

  Very respectfully,

  WM. B. TURNER,
  Lieut., Cmdg. Light Battery.

  Maj. M. SMITH,
Chief of Artillery, 1st Div., Polk's Corps, Army of Tennessee.

  -----

  JANUARY 29, 1863.
In accordance with special orders issued from headquarters, I have the
honor to submit the following report of the action of Smith's battery
during the engagements before Murfreesborough, Tenn., from
  December 29, 1862, to January 3, 1863, both inclusive:

On the 29th, the battery was ordered to take a position on Stone's River,
about 2 1/2 miles from Murfreesborough, on the left wing, and lay in
position until late in the evening, when it was ordered to take another
position about three-fourths of a mile farther down on the left. In that
position it remained until about sunset, when I was ordered to return and
part my battery for the night near the first-named position. The battery
was not engaged during the day, and did not fire a single shot.

On the 30th, I was ordered to cross Stone's River and take a position in
rear of your brigade, which I did. During this day the battery was not
engaged, though exposed to heavy shelling from the enemy's guns. In
this position the battery remained until late in the evening, when I was
ordered to return and park my battery for the night in the same place it
occupied on the night of December 29.

On the 31st, I was ordered to cross Stone's River and take a position
about half a mile from said river, which was done, and the battery went
into action, firing a few rounds. From thence I was ordered about half
a mile farther onward, to take another position. At this point the battery
went into action a second time, firing upon one of the enemy's
batteries, as well as upon their infantry. In this second engagement the
  battery fired about 200 rounds, and was engaged about forty minutes;
succeeded in silencing the enemy's battery, as well as driving back their
infantry. The enemy's battery having ceased firing, and their infantry
having fallen back, I was ordered to advance farther onward and take
a position near the one occupied by the enemy's battery, which had been
captured during the second engagement. In this position the battery
remained until late in the evening, when I was ordered to another
position to the right of the one last occupied, and at this point the
battery was engaged about twenty minutes, firing several rounds. I then
parked it near by for the night.

On the morning of January 1, I was ordered with my battery to take a
position near the one last held the evening before, which was done. The
battery lay in this position during the whole day without being engaged.
On the night of January 1, it was parked in the same place, and the
men, according to orders, went to building fortifications, which
occupied them until a late hour.

At 2 o'clock in the morning of January 2, the battery was ordered to the
right of the Nashville pike, to take a position on Stone's River, which
was done, and during the day it was engaged six times, averaging about
a half hour to each engagement. In the action of this day the battery
succeeded twice (in connection with those of Carnes, Stanford, and
Scott) in driving back a column of the enemy's infantry. The effect of
our two 12-pounder Napoleon guns was noticed particularly during the
whole day, and late in the evening they succeeded of themselves in
driving back a column of the enemy's infantry. Some time after dark I
was ordered back across the pike, and parked my battery for the night.

On January 3, I was ordered with my battery to the left on the
Wilkinson pike, and lay in position during the whole day without being
engaged. In the evening of this day I was ordered to camp about 2 miles
from Murfreesborough, on the Shelbyville pike, and there parked my
battery until the evening of the 4th, when I was ordered to proceed on
  toward Shelbyville.

The commander takes great pleasure to include in this report that his
men remained steadily at their posts, filling their respective duties
during the hottest part of the engagement, and acted in every respect
  commendable as soldiers.

The list of casualties were 1 killed and 4 slightly wounded; also 8 horses
  killed and lost.

  Respectfully submitted.

  WM. B. TURNER,
Lieut., Cmdg. Smith's Battery Light Artillery.

  Capt. THOMAS H. MALONE,
  A. A. G., Maney's Brig., Cheatham's Div., Polk's Corps, Army of Tenn.

Chickamagua after battle report:

Report of Lieut. William B. Turner, Smith's (Mississippi) battery.

  HDQRS. SMITH'S BATTERY.
  October 3, 1863.
CAPT.: I have the honor to submit the following report of the
action of Smith's battery during the engagement at the battle of
  Chickamauga:

On September 17, I was ordered to have my battery in readiness
to move with the brigade, which was done, and in the evening
my battery moved forward in the direction of Chickamauga.

On the 18th, the march was resumed in the same direction, no
engagement having occurred during either day.

On the 19th, the march was continued. Chickamauga was
crossed, and my battery was halted for a time in reach of the enemy's
guns. In the evening of this day I followed on in rear of the
brigade, when I received orders from Gen. G. Maney to leave
one piece of my battery and fall back about 300 yards with the
remaining three pieces. I left one piece in charge of Lieut. C. S.
Smith, which commenced firing, and continued to do so until
Lieut. Smith was wounded, and it was forced to fall back on
account of the advancing line of the enemy. It thus rejoined the
battery, which was lying in position on the ridge. I then placed
Lieut. C. Le B. Ingraham in charge of the section hitherto
commanded by Lieut. Smith. About this time I perceived the
enemy advancing steadily in line of battle, when I ordered firing
to commence, which was done, and resulted in repulsing the
  enemy three different times.

Early in the engagement Lieut. C. Le B. Ingraham was killed.
My battery fired during the engagement (which lasted about an
hour) 220 rounds, composed of solid shot, shell, spherical case,
and canister. The repulse of the enemy was effected by my
battery alone as there was only an occasional shot fired by a few
sharpshooters who had remained to support it.

I remained at this position all night, and on the morning of the
20th I was ordered to report to the brigade, which was then
about a mile to my left. I did so, and remained with the brigade
all day, being exposed to the enemy's fire all the time. Late in
the evening I was ordered to put my battery in position, which
was done. During this day I did not fire a gun.

On the 21st, my battery resumed the march with the brigade in
  the direction of Chattanooga.

On the 22d, the march was continued, and late in the evening
one section of my battery was ordered forward and took position,
under charge of Lieut. W. W. Henry, on the side of ridge
(Missionary Ridge). Late in the evening the remaining section
was ordered forward, and the section on the ridge joined in,
when the entire battery moved forward over the ridge.

On the night of the 22d, I parked my battery to the right of the
brigade in line of battle, and have remained in line ever since,
with the exception of change of camp twice.

During the march and while engaged, I take great pleasure in
saying that the officers and men performed all the duties assigned
them without reluctance, and although exposed to very heavy
firing, they remained at their posts and fought with courage
  becoming soldiers.

The casualties during the entire engagement were 2 killed
  and 4 wounded.

The above brief report is respectfully submitted.

  Very respectfully,

  WM. B. TURNER,
  Lieut., Comdg. Battery.

  Capt. A. J. PORTER,
  Assistant Adjutant-Gen.

On The Trail of Tilman W Bobo

May 1, 2004

[Below are, in progress, research notes from Betty placed here for record and subject to change...]

We have made some headway on the Tilman W. Bobo dilemma.  We seached for the two boys that we had found in Bartow Co., 1870 living with a Mary E. Bobo.  Not knowing if this was our Maryann Eveline Bishop Bobo or not..but decided maybe we could find these children.  Sure enough, found the Augustus K. Bobo living in Cherokee Co ALABAMA in 1930...... which is just across the Georgia Alabama line about 30 minutes.  After that my friend in Cherokee Co. GEORGIA said she knew someone that lived over that way and contacted them and they got us a page from the telephone book...  So one night, I picked a name and called it.  Lo and behold, turns out the lady I reached said her husband is Augustus K's grandchild.  And she knew of the other child, Andrew Hamilton, who also lived in that same county.  And the good news is that she knew of Maryanne Eveline (they called her Grandmother Eveline) and also of Tilman W. Bobo.  Seems the story goes that Eveline lived over there until she died and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.  The Mary E. we found in 1870 was Maryann Eveline.... This lady has a letter with the information supposedly from Mary E's. Pension Application  and it is dated 3 April 1894. It says that Mary E. Bobo, who being duly sworn, upon oath, says that her husband Tilman W. Bobo served in the Civil War and was a Private in Turners Battery of Smith's Regiment of Artillery and that his death came from disease contracted in the service of the Confederate States, and that his death occurred during the late war, that she has not since re-married; that she was a resident of Alabama on the 13th day of Feb. 1891 and is a resident at the date of this application and that her taxable property does not exceed four hundred dollars in value.  It says that this application is signed Mary E. Bobo.

This letter also says that there is a second application dated 24 Feb. 1897 and that one gives her post office address as Leonard.  And this application is signed with her mark.

This lady in Alabama, had done some research on this line and sent me her family group sheets along with this letter and a group picture that had Augustus K and his family in it.  She didn't say who the others were, so I foresee another phone call.

The coincidence involved with this is..... You may remember I descend from Kindred Bishop, son of Mary Bobo and Benjamin Bishop.  Mary Ann Eveline is also their daughter and brother to Kindred.  Benjamin and Mary Bobo Bishop had two other sons... Samuel B. Bishop and Solomon J. Bishop.  Samuel B. was not a problem to find...he lived right along in the same area as Kindred and Mother Mary Bobo Bishop lived with Samuel B.  Now Solomon J. was another story.... We searched high and low... and one day hit upon a email address that ended up being one of Solomon J's descendants.  After corresponding with her, we find that Solomon J. served in the civil war and was buried in Mt. Pleasant cemetery in Cherokee Co., ALABAMA.

As I was looking at the census in the past week searching for the family of Andrew Hamilton....On the same road (Blue Pond Road) lived the children of Solomon Bishop....only a number of houses from the children of Augustus K. Bobo.

Solomon J. Bishop was in Bartow Co., in 1870....Mary E.Bobo was in Bartow Co. in 1870.... Tilman had died as result of the Civil War sometime between 1861 (Augustus's birth date) and 1870.   Solomon J. moves to Cherokee Co., Alabama and my guess is that MaryAnn Eveline with her two boys went right along with him.

We still haven't located them in 1860..... They about had to be in Georgia.... I will need to find out where that unit he served in was from.   This lady said that,  Augustus K. and his youngest son, Ernest went to Ga. and when they came back, they said, "We couldn't even find his grave".

So I am guessing he died in Georgia and is buried somewhere in Bartow Co.  Probably never will know where.

And she is buried in Mt. Pleasant Cem.  This lady said that all the grandchildren got together and put a marker on her grave years ago.  So she said she could show exactly where it is.

I want a copy of the original pension papers just to prove this info.  The info was in a typewritten letter from another lady (and I don't know who that is)....  Also I need to find out where she got Maryann E.'s death date.

Anyway, I just had to share this with you.....Seems as this blood hound has found a trail.... and it seems to have a good smell to it....

=============

March 27th, 2004

[Below are, in progress, research notes from Betty placed here for record and subject to change...]

...I went into Yahoo search...put in Tilman Bobo and found one listed in Alabama... Turns out that this one is
PVT Tilman Bobo, of the 43rd Reg. Ala. Infantry, company I. After searching out the 43rd Reg..I found this;
Pvt. Tilman Bobo Oct 29, 1864...Blandford Church Cemetery, VA.

Could this possibly be the one elusive Tilman W. Bobo that disappeared after the 1850 census? That was married to Jane Evaline Bobo and #2 Maryanne Evaline Bishop?

I have not found Maryanne Evaline Bishop Bobo either, unless she is the one I found in the 1870 Bartow Co., Ga. census Now for my theory, if this happens to be the one, He and Maryanne were traveling westward (so many Bobo's ended up in Texas), they got as far as Alabama... the war came along, he enlisted. He was killed and buried in VA... Maryanne came back to Bartow Co., Georgia to be near her relatives.. (Her brothers Kindred, Samuel B. and Solomon Bishop all was there in 1860... Solomon was in Alabama in 1880.. AND three of Tilman's brothers, Elijah Monroe, Hiram and Manley were all in and around Bartow & Cherokee Co., about that time. Bartow and Cherokee are side by side counties)... don't know what part of Alabama but the Alabama line is only about an hour or more from Bartow Co., Ga. It looks as if I could find them in the 1860 census (so far no luck), but they could have been traveling and missed that census...

It appears also, these names are of Jeremiah Bobo's family, Mary Jane Bobo's, his 1st cousin's father's family, Wm, Lewis, Mary, Ann.
You can tell they were very careful or mindful in their naming convention, making sure those special in their lives, were remembered.

6th Texas Cavalry Battalion
(Gould's Battalion; 3d Battalion, Cavalry)
Fought with 13th Texas Cavalry

"The Southern Cross of Honor"

Gould’s Battalion (6th Texas Cavalry Battalion)

Gould's Battalion was organized in May 1862 at Porter Springs, Houston County, Texas by Robert S. Gould of Leon County. The men in Gould’s Battalion were from Houston, Leon, Madison and Trinity counties. This battalion numbered about 525 men and was first attached to the 13th Texas Cavalry, but became an independent battalion. Afterwards, it was placed in General Horace Randal's, 2nd Brigade, Walker's Division. On November 12, 1864, Major Gould was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and Captain William Viser was promoted to Major. Major Brannan died in October of 1866 from wounds suffered at Battle of Mansfield. and is buried in the Viser Cemetery in Midway, Madison County, Texas. Gould’s battalion participated in the battles of Mansfield and Pleasant Hill, Louisiana Names of the Officers of Gould's Battalion were Colonel Robert S. Gould, Surgeon W.E. Saunders, Quartermaster Henry D. Patrick, Adjutant Thomas Carson Brannan, Captain P.I. Holly of Company A, Captain William W. Veser of Company B, Captain James McClean of Company C, Captain Thomas J. Thorn of Company D and Captain A.G. Rogers of Company E.

Gould's Battalion: Sketch of Its History by a Member
From the Houston County Courier Vol.2 Number 25, July 24, 1891

Gould's Battalion which meets in Crockett , July 22 and 23 was organized and mustered into the Confederate service in May 1862 at Porter Springs, Houston County, Texas, and consisted of five companies as follows:

Company A, Captain Tullis, of Trinity County

Company B, Captain Viser, of Madison County

Company C, Captain James McLean of Houston County

Company D, Captain W. D. Wood of Leon County

Company E., Captain J. T. Heflin of Houston County

The rank and file numbered about 525 men. R.S. Gould of Leon County was elected Major of the Battalion. This Battalion was first attached to the 13th (Burnett's) Texas Cavalry, but remained with it only a short time when it was withdrawn and became an independent organization. Afterwards, it was placed in Randal's Brigade, Walker's Division, where it remained during the rest of the war.

The service of this command was in the Trans-Mississippi Department and extended from the Northern part of Arkansas to Berwick Bay, Louisiana. It was engaged in the following battles, meeting and opposing Banks army in his march from Atchafalaya to Mansfield.

The first general battle in which it was engaged was the battle of Mansfield, Louisiana, which was followed closely by the battle of Pleasant Hill where Bank's army was routed and retreated to their transports at Atchafalaya.

Walkers's Division, of which this battalion was a part, was then ordered on a forced march to meet Steele's army then advancing on Shreveport from Little Rock, Arkansas. Steele having heard of Bank's defeat began a retreat towards Little Rock and was overtaken by Walker's division at Jenkin's Ferry on Sabine River where they engaged in battle under unfavorable circumstances, resulting in the loss of many men. Steele succeeded in crossing the river with his army in a demoralized condition and continued his retreat to Little Rock.

Walker's Division was then ordered back to Alexandria on the Red River after a hard campaign of several weeks' duration marching and fighting, the men being very exhausted. This division was in many small battles including "Nigger Hill," Poison Springs, and others not remembered, and was marched during hard weather to the relief of Arkansas Post, arriving just too late to render assistance.

This Battalion suffered untold hardships, living in swamps winter and summer. Their number was greatly depleted by sickness and diseases incident to camp life.

At their reunion there will be perhaps not more than one hundred of the original members present.

Of the original commissioned officers, only Gould, Viser, Wood, Nixon, and Heflin are living. We understand that this Battalion will probably have their reunion next year in joyous greeting wherever they may meet. We should be delighted to chronicle their harrowing experiences if space permitted. May all our good people join in honoring these old defenders of our liberties!

    HISTORICAL NOTES:

The 7th Georgia along with the 8th, 9th, 11th, and 59th made up Gen. 'Tige' Anderson's Brigade in Hood's Division of Longstreet's Corps.

The GA 7th Infantry Regiment was formed in May, 1861, at Atlanta, Georgia, and in June moved to Harper’s Ferry,Virginia. Assigned to Colonel F. S. Bartow’s Brigade, Army of the Shenandoah, it was active in the fight at First Manassas. In April 1861, the regiment had 611 effectives and served under the command of General G. T. Anderson until the end of the war. It participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Day’s Battles to Cold Harbor, except when it was detached with Longstreet at Suffolk, in Georgia, and at Knoxville. The 7th was not involved in the Battle of Chickamauga. It was active in the long Petersburg siege south and north of the James River and later the Appomattox Campaign.  It reported 153 casualties at First Manassas, 147 during the Seven Days' Battles, and 120 at Second Manassas. Losses were light at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, but from April 14 to May 6 there were 98 disabled, and from August 1 to December 31, 1864, the unit had 56 killed or wounded. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 24 officers and 164 men. The field officers were Colonels George H. Carmical, Lucius J. Gartrell, William W. White, and William T. Wilson; Lieutenant Colonels Moses T. Almon, James F. Cooper, and John Dunwoody; and Majors

"The Southern Cross of Honor
"

  Unit History:
13th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry

13th Infantry Regiment was organized in July, 1861, at Lightwoodknot Springs, near Columbia, South Carolina. Many of the men were recruited in Greenville, Newberry, Abbeville, and Spartanburg counties. After three months of instruction at Lightwoodknot Springs the unit moved to the coast of South Carolina near Pocotaligo.

In April, 1862, it was ordered to Virginia and assigned to General Gregg's and McGowan's Brigade. The 13th was prominent in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then continued the fight in the Petersburg trenches and around Appomattox. It took 413 effectives to Gaines' Mill and 342 to Frayser's Farm, lost 26 killed and 118 wounded at Second Manassas, had 5 killed and 24 wounded at Ox Hill, and lost 3 killed and 52 wounded at Fredericksburg. The unit sustained 91 casualties at Chancellorsville, 130 of 390 at Gettysburg, 63 at The Wilderness, 86 at Spotsylvania, 49 from May 12 to July 1, 1864, 42 at Deep Bottom, 32 at Fussell¿s Mill, and 34 at Poplar Springs Church.

It surrendered 13 officers and 183 men. The field officers were Colonels Benjamin T. Brockman, Oliver E. Edwards, and Isaac F. Hunt; Lieutenant Colonels P. Ludlow Calhoun, T. Stabo Farrow, and William Lester; and Majors David R. Duncan and Joseph L. Wofford.

Note from Mike:
Currently, I do not know which battles Robert was wounded in,
or if the injuries removed him from service, thus listing all the
battles the unit was engaged.
