Biography of Charlie and Addie

Written by: Jerry Matheson (2002)

Charles Thomas (Charlie) & Elizabeth Azeline (Addie) Holley White

Charlie was born in Maud, Texas, January 3, 1878.  His father, Thomas Monroe White, had come to Texas as a young man from South Carolina.  Charlie’s mother was Martha Olivia Harris, born April 11, 1852 in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia.  Charlie was born about three miles northwest of Maud.  When he was a teenager, he planted a tree down the lane from his family home and said that someday he would build him a house and live there.  He eventually did.

Addie was born December 25, 1882, in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama.  She was the daughter of William Marion (Bill) and Julia Emma Cochran Holley.  Bill and Emma moved to Maud in 1899 when their youngest daughter, Ilie, was about 7 years old and Addie was about 17 years old.  Addie was the only child out of their 8 children that never dipped snuff.  The others were dipping by the time they were “knee high to a grasshopper.”  Addie was asked why she abstained and she said, “I don’t know.  I just never wanted to.  After I was a big kid, I did try it one time and it made me so deathly sick, I never tried that again.”  She was always different in many ways from the others, not as “high strung,” not as easily angered, and had a lot of pride and poise in dealing with other people.

Charlie and Addie met in Maud, courted, and were married by Henry Rachel, a Baptist Minister on March 15, 1903.  They lived on Charlie’s father’s place when they first got married.  They were both hard working and ambitious.  They moved north of Maud (north of the Methodist Church, across the highway) where Emma Lee was born on December 30, 1903.  Mattie Carrie (Skeet) was born there also on August 24, 1905.  They moved soon after her birth to Sand Hill where Willie Nell (Boot) was born October 3, 1907.

In 1908, Charlie’s sister, Inez, died at age 21.  When she became ill, she went to her sister Lola, whose husband was a doctor, and he diagnosed it as typhoid fever.  In those early years, there wasn’t much to be done for it.  They brought her body back to Maud by train for burial.  It was dark before the burial was completed and they had to use lanterns to finish.  She was a beautiful, young woman.  She was engaged to be married and they buried her in her wedding dress.

From Sand Hill, Charlie and Addie moved their girls to New Boston, just a few miles away, then back to a beautiful spot southeast of Maud where Lucille (Tod) was born January 8, 1911.  She was their redhead.  They now had their family of four cute and charming daughters.

In 1912, they bought 100 acres of land three miles northwest of Maud near Charlie’s parents’ home, and worked their “fingers to the bone” to pay for it.  There was a four room house on the property and they lived there while Charlie, his brother Marion, and a Mr. Hubbard built a new four-room bungalow in 1913.  Charlie bought a 75 acre piece of land about one mile closer to town down the road in 1919.  They moved there for a while until a storm came and destroyed the house, so they sold that property and moved back to the original home.

Tod tells of remembering even at age 2 her mother calling her Papa and she would try to mimic her.  “Char-lee, dinner,” she’d call.  (Tod could still remember the tone of the yell which was from an F above middle C to E above.)

When Tod was about 6 years old (the older sisters were in school), she liked to go to the field with her Papa and watch him plow.  One morning after watching him plow for a while, she started back to the house.  She was leaning against the wood fence watching the piglets nurse when she heard her Mama start screaming.  Addie’s clothes were on fire from the open flame under the wash pot.  She had on a new apron made of schiaveats (like denim) and couldn’t get it off.  Tod thought her mother was after her and she started running to her dad.  Charlie heard her screaming and came running across the field.  He tried to get the apron off and couldn’t.  Finally, he threw Addie down and dumped the wash pot on her – clothes and all.  Addie was burned to the “hollow” on her stomach on her right lower side, the doctor said.

After Charlie and Addie had Emma Lee, their greatest desire was to see that their children were good, honest citizens, and to see that they were educated.  That they did as far as the girls would take advantage of it.  Emma Lee was the only one who received a college degree, but the other three went to college a short time – all at East Texas State Teacher’s College in Commerce, Texas.

A letter was written on the back of this picture, and mentions Berlie Mae Ratliff to the left,
I believe Aunt Azeline is Julia Emma Cochran Holley's Sister Thurssie Azeline Ratliff.

"Grandma,
This picture of Aunt Azeline was in a letter dated May 19th, 1936, written by Berlie Mae Ratliff.  The baby is her great, great grandchild.  Berlie Mae's Aunt Lucy's grandchild. The picture of the lady wearing the hat is Berlie Mae Ratliff."
