Letter from Glenn
Thrapp of Redwater TX |
Mike,
This is from a copy of a letter I sent Kay several years before she published
the White Family book. My copy is not dated.
About Benjamin's land;
1. 1852 to 1858 payed taxes on 320 acres that later became known as the
Nathan Proctor Headright. [See Map Below]
2. 1859 to 1864 John G. White payed tax on Ben's estate, same acres.
[Note: This John G White being Ben's brother]
3.1865-1868 John's widow Mary payed tax on Ben's estate, same acres.
[Note: John G White's wife was Mary Whitus]
4. 1869-1870 W.P. White payed tax on this land.
[Notes: This is William Pinkney White son of Ben & Polly]
Notes from Glenn;
Ben White - Most of the 320 acres is in 2 creek bottoms. The hightest land in this
Headright shows signs of a old home site. The area is covered in white
narciss flowers, the same as found at the Tapp home site & Elias's home site.
John G. White - There are two possibles for his home sites. The site on the
west side is my guess. There is a house there now & I can't search the area
with a metal detector. Has the same white flowers.
Tapp home site - The graves of the Tapp & Ben & Polly White were located west
of this place. Unable to find. Believe John & Mary White could be buried
there yet. Found home made bricks & several metal objects indicating a home
for many many years. Dorothy Pullen gave me directions to this site. She
passed away a couple years ago.
Glenn
Mike's Notes: Kay's book was published in 1989, I would guess the letter was written in late 1970's or very early in 1980's. Mr. Glenn Thrapp of Redwater Texas was very instrumental in the success of the White story, in Bowie County Tx., and provided much of his research and time to the success of our family book. Even today, Glenn is still helping us expand on our family History. A true Neighbor, Resident and Local historian, his accomplishments and discoveries will never go unrecognized. Many of our descendants have been taken on tours of the old Creed Cemetery, and former lands of Elias White and his childrens, compliments of Glenn, myself included. Without his guidance, some of us, would still be wondering the woods, trying to find our ancestors resting place. Not enough can be said... |
Ben's land is below brother John
G White's
Ben paid tax on this land from 1852 to 1858, was continued by his
brother John after 1858... |
UP^
Ben claimed his 320 acres of land via a
old homestead Texas law called Pre-emption. From 1845 to 1854, individuals could claim 320 acres of land from the unappropriated public domain. The amount was reduced to 160 acres in 1854 and the grant program was cancelled in 1856. Preemption grants of 160 acres were reinstituted in 1866 and continued until 1898. To qualify for a preemption grant settlers were required to live on the land for three years and make improvements. |

Tapp / Center Ridge
Cemeteries The 8 Stones bottom Center comprises the Tapp Cemetery Lies within the Center Ridge Cemetery, Maud Bowie Co TX |
Grave Stones of Ben & Polly |
Benjamin White died 1858 Aged 55 Note: 55 yrs is incorrect - he was 38 yrs old |
Polly (Nix) White died 1855 Aged 48 Years old Note: 48 yrs old is incorrect, she was 37 yrs old. |
Note: Some of the eight Grave Stones were probably created in 1956, when the Tapp Cemetery, was relocated into the Center Ridge Cemetery, I suspect a descendant was using his best memory when he had the Dates applied, as they are incorrect. The former location, I am told, by Glenn Thrapp of Redwater Texas, and a local historian, belonged to the Tapp's, which Elias's daughter Mary White Tapp, was a part of, via her married to Charles Y Tapp. |
Glenn
Thrapp writes about the Tapp Cemetery
On the Tapps buried in Center Ridge. Dick & Minnie were Black. They are found on the 1870 Census of Cass Co.,Tx. figure they were slaves that came with Charles Y. Tapp. Never found proof as to William Tapp, believe that he was a brother to Charles. That line died with Jenny & I have never researched it very hard. I thought that were probably more graves in the Tapp Cemetery than they moved, ones without stones. [Wm is the brother of Charles per Wm's Will] Tried to find the original site once with no luck. Wanted to count the depressions, was looking for John G. White, who lived close by. The Tapps in the Center Ridge Cemetery were moved to their present location when they built Lake Wright Patman in the 1956. [It is not known for sure if the Tapp land is now in the lake?] A William S. Tapp , 1846, paid tax in Bowie Co. Charles Tapp, page 50, 1850 Bowie Co. Census, but no William. William might have been in Cass Co. which was just across the river from Charles. [Wm buried at Tapp/Watson cemetery in CRC] Found some old notes on
Center Ridge: NOTE: The TAPP Cemetery was
relocated from 1856 **[Green inserts are by Mike White from what we learned later...] |
