Martha 1861  Bowie C. TX
John Lee 3/6/1862 Bowie C. TX m. Emily Elizabeth Russell d. 5/6/1939 d. New Boston TX
William  b.1867 Bowie C. TX
Ida L.    b.1872   Bowie C. TX

History gleened from Leroy's obit. states that his parents and he moved to Texas in 1832, settling at Spanish Bluff. He moved to Old Boston area after parents died. My wife says when she was a child an old black man took them to a site near Maud where his grandfather had been a slave for Leroy. We visited the Creed Cemetary about 10 years ago with an Alford relative and Henry Earl Fagan.

The White site is very interesting. My wife started looking into her ancestors in 1989 and continued for a few years. My wife, Cindi, decided she needed kids so she hasn't had time to continue research. We have a few old pics of Alfords and others. Have a pic of John Lee Alford.

Original Obituary in possession of Mrs.Verzillia Nichols, Houston Texas, this was in the 1980's. (Kay's Book)

Obituary  (Transcribed)
(Newspaper name unk at this time)

Martha Ann White Alford
Died Feb 4,1903

God knows how to deliver his
children. Wednesday, February 4 Mrs. Martha Alford was found dead in bed, her eyes closed as if in sleep. About twenty-eight or thirty years ago she found the Methodist Church with her husband and two daughters and has remained in the church and lived a true Christian life from that time. She was sixty-seven years old and the mother of seven children, four of whom she has lost besides her husband. After her husband’s death Taylor Lee, her son-in-law, moved into her house to take care of her.

Last year two Mormon Elders came there and Mr. Lee allowed them to Preach in the house until he and his whole family were converted and became full-blooded Mormons. They tried to get the old lady to join them but she was to strong a Christian to be led off into heathenism. Though they told that if she would join them and be baptized they would afterward lay hands on her head and she would receive the holy ghost and would prophesy and whatever she prophesied would come to pass, also that if she would be baptized for her husband who was dead it would save him.

The good old woman would only reply: "I do not believe your docrine." They could not humbug her her. To show what kind of people they have beguiled and go into their church, they sent one of them down to the Creed Graveyard with the measure of the box. They lost it before he got their. A girl ask him if they were going to hold an inquest over Grandma; he said, ‘I guess so, if the Elders come.’ She told him it didn’t take Elders for that and asked who would hold the services at the grave. ‘If the Elders come they will, if not we won’t have any,’ he replied. About two o’clock they drove up to the graveyard with the corpse. They opened the coffin to let the people see her, then after a short while they closed and lowered it and had sang and prayed then the Elder said: ‘We have come together to pay our last respects to this woman who has lived and moral life’. Then he read the latter part the fifteenth chapter of first Corinthians and said a few words about the glory of the sun, moon and stars and then dropped everything that is pertaining to a funeral.’

Note: Martha & Leroy Alford were members of the Maud Methodist Church.

OBITUARY OF

LEROY ALFORD

Died very suddently of heart trouble at his home on Thursday at 6 0'clock a.m. July 27, 1899. Mr. L. R. Alford, aged 73 years, six months and 17 days.

Mr. Alford was born in Louisiana January 10, 1826, moved with his parents to Bowie County in 1832 and settled on the Red River at the place known then as Spanish Bluff. After reaching manhood, his parents dying, he moved to Old Boston and in 1853 was married to Miss Martha White and moved about 3 miles southeast of New Boston where he lived until his death. He was a consistant member of the M. E. Church South for nearly 40 years, And his daily walk proved himself an earnest christian, meek and lowly in his determination to serve his God. To know him was to appreciate his worth. In the house he was loving husband, a kind father and a friend of true worth. He was hospitable to all alike. A citizen and a neighbor --one was always better for knowing. He leaves a wife and many relatives and friends to mourn his lost.

END.

Obit was provided to me by Pat Stout
a descendant of this lineage.

Note:
Leroy's age is different from each census,
1860, 70, 80 the 1870 seems to be correct if the headstone is correct. This will be significant as some say Leroy is the son of Winfield Alford of Gonzalez TX, if this is to be true, then the 1860 census would be correct because it shows Leroy at 34 yrs old, if it can be proved that Winfield lived in LA, then I might agree, but at this time, I am not convinced our Leroy is Winfield's son. Leroy did not name any of his children after Winfield's lineage or his children, this will have to be investigated further...

The Obituary of Leroy, says, 'his family arrived in Spanish Bluff 1832', Spanish Bluff is in the North-East of Texas, south of the Red River, of course, this is also the general area Leroy settled...

So, we have him possibly in Gonzalez TX, near Austin in 1832'ish and also Spanish Bluff, 1832? If this can be sorted out, we may be able to place Leroy into the Alford family tree he belongs to. (On going reserach...)

UPDATE:
Many thanks to Pat Stout for provding us with a copy of
Leroy's Obituary, it does confirm that he first settled at Spanish Bluff in 1832, and that he moved to the Old Boston area of Bowie Co in 1853, after his parents death.  The Winfield of Gonzalez may be  related, but doesn't appear to be his father, that is still an unknown, at this time.

Spanish Bluff

Article

"Leroy's Parents settled here in 1832"
Leroy's Obituary mentions this fact

SPANISH BLUFF

Spanish Bluff is a landmark about six miles northeast of New Boston on the Texas side of the Red River in Bowie County (at 33°31' N, 94°24' W). The name originated with traders or early settlers. Here in 1806 President Thomas Jefferson's Red River expeditionqv was blocked by a Spanish army commanded by Francisco Vianaqv and forced to abort its exploration of the Southwest. Spanish Bluff, an imposing bluff 100 feet high, vegetated with large oaks and pines, stretches nearly half a mile along the south bank before the river swings away from it; it was a well-known landmark on the Red River long before the coming of Europeans. J. R. Swanton believed it was the location of one of the Nanatsoho Caddo divisions during the late precontact and early contact periods. The Nanatsohos were among the most westerly of the Red River Caddos. When the French officer Jean Baptiste Bénard de La Harpeqv raised the French flag over these villages in 1719, he considered locating his post on the bluff before deciding on a location downriver, within the Kadohadacho-Nasonnite nucleus of villages. Viana's selection of the bluff as a defensive position was based upon military considerations and upon the premise that it marked the Caddo perimeter and therefore the French one. Spanish Bluff became a landmark of importance to the settlers of Northeast Texas. The name was used in boundary descriptions for Clay Township, Hempstead County, Arkansas, in 1819. In 1827 Edmund Pendleton Gainesqv suggested it as the northern point of a temporary eastern boundary of Texas. It became a place for the rendezvous of parties in search of renegade Indians, and Peter Ellis Beanqv reported Shawnees living near the bluff in 1830. Spanish Bluff was proposed as a postal station on the route from Washington, Texas, to Jonesboro, Arkansas, in 1835. The bluff became incorporated in the headright land of Texas patriot Richard Ellisqv in 1838. Today it is associated with Ellis but rarely remembered for the role it played in the early imperial struggle for Texas.

Possible Father of Leroy Alford?

So Far this is the closest I've gotten to a Candidate for Leroy's father,
this Roy Alford, lived in Red River then old Boston Texas, in Bowie Co.

In a Texas Supreme County Case involving Roy's land in later years,
his name is spelled ROY ALFORD, and referenced, but did not involve
him, the Roy Alford Survey of his land in Hill Co TX. This serves as proof
his name was Roy Alford, not Alfred, as was used on some documents.
The Case: Bonner, Associate Justice - The Texas Reports: Cases adjudged
in the Supreme Court, Volume 50.   Page 313

Roy Alford (Alfred)
who may be the father of our Leroy Alford
Received 1280 Acres of land for his emigration
to Texas, Red River Co (later Bowie County TX)
recorded as Mar 1836, the confirmation of this was
signed in old Boston Texas Sep 6, 1841 and issued
Nov 1, 1838. The land for this headright was taken
in Navarro County TX, So. Fork Richland Creek.

That s where I stopped reading.

The fact that Leroy's obit said they came to TX in 1832 and that was the year Needham Judge Alford was a minister in Sabine Co., TX. Coincidence?

I have three Allen Alfords in my data, but all I know about two of them is their approximate birth date in NC. Do you know who the tax payer above could belong to? He seems to have disappeared from the rolls about the right time (1845-6) to be father of Leroy P.?

I have some document copies in my files where James P. Alford was a county official in south Texas counties in 1830s including a bond signed by Sam Houston as president of he Republic. Then he just disappeared! So apparently he went to Bowie County about 1845, to get on the 1846 tax list.
