Watson Family
Family of Watson's buried at the original
Tapp/Watson Cemetery site before bring relocated
to the Center Ridge Cemetery in Bowie County Texas,
however, no Watson's were relocated to the new site, in 1956,
even though, later, some Watson's of this family were buried at CRC

Watson Land Grant PDF Files >>

To Right
are 5 Land Grants 2 for James Watson and 3 for Orin Watson>>
These two neighbors, properties were next to Wm & Charles Tapp, and
they are probably the other half of the Tapp/Watson Cemetery, that
was NOT relocated from, probably the Tapp/Watson Lands in 1956, this
included 8 relocated Graves to a Section of the Center Ridge Cem
etery, in Maud, called Tapp/Watson Cemetery, a cemetery within a cemetery.
For our historical purposes, I list the 5 Watson Grant PDF files to the Right

Watson's Ferry was near the better known Epperson's Ferry
which the Watson Property was adjacent to, as we can only
find information on Epperson's Ferry, I post that here:

EPPERSON'S FERRY.

During its first session the First Congress of the Republic of Texas offered half a league of land to anyone who would operate a ferry across the Sulphur River. By April 1837 Mark Epperson had built a ferry on Trammel's Trace in Bowie County, almost due south of the location of present-day New Boston. Congress granted Epperson the half league, and the ferry was soon widely known as Epperson's Ferry. In December 1837 the legislature instructed the postmaster general to institute mail service from Nacogdoches to Epperson's Ferry, and from there to the county seat of Red River County. Although little is known about it, a small settlement apparently developed around the ferry in the early 1840s, which served as a gathering place for area settlers. The ferry was eventually replaced by a wooden bridge, and then by a bridge of more modern construction in 1924. In 1936 the Texas Centennial Commission erected a marker at the site of the old ferry.

1935 Advertisements that mentions Charles Tapp Sr's
former lands in Bastrop County Texas

More Notes from Mr. Glenn Thrapp
 of Redwater Bowie Co TX,
on the TAPP Cemetery and its residences
and some misc. census records:

Glenn Thrapp writes about the Tapp Cemetery

On the Tapps buried in Center Ridge. Dick & Minnie were Black. They are found on the 1870 Census of Cass Co.,Tx. figure they were slaves that came with Charles Y. Tapp.

Never found proof as to William Tapp, believe that he was a brother to Charles. That line died with Jenny & I have never researched it very hard. I thought that were probably more graves in the Tapp Cemetery  than they moved, ones without stones.

Tried to find the original site once with no luck. Wanted to count the depressions, was looking for John G. White, who lived close by.

The Tapps in the Center Ridge Cemetery were moved to their present location when they built Lake Wright Patman in the 1950's.

A William S. Tapp , 1846, paid tax in Bowie Co.

Charles Tapp, page 50, 1850 Bowie Co. Census, but no William. William might have been in Cass Co. which was just across the river from Charles.

Found some old notes on Center Ridge:

Tapp, Mima        Born in Person Co.,NC.  (former slave/servant of Wm Tapp)
Tapp, Dick         Born in Ky.                     (former slave/servant of Wm Tapp)
Tapp, Eliza         Born in Person Co.,NC   (wife of Wm Tapp)
Tapp, Wm         Born in AL.                     (husband of Eliza Tapp, brother of Charles Y Tapp)

Here is another tidbit:

Bowie Co.,Tx Book 18, Page 65, 1 Jun 1931, Guardianship of Henry & Lucde Tapp minors, Guardian Mattie B. Jones , land in Clarksville, Red River Co., Tx.

Not sure about the Smith's in Tapp Cemetery, part of Center Ridge, but believe he was the second husband of Susan White.

NOTE: The TAPP Cemetery was relocated from possibly
Lands once owned by the Tapp's to CRC.

WELCOME TO THE WICOCOMICO
INDIAN NATION
HISTORY SITE

The Wicocomico were first mentioned by Captain John Smith when he explored Virginia's Northern Neck in 1608.( The area between the Rappahanock and Potomac River.) Smith's maps, produced during his exploration show thirty plus Chiefdoms which controlled approximately 161 villages, many made up the Powhatan Empire. One such tribe was the "Wighcocomico"(as they were called in the early 1600s by Capt John Smith) that lived at the mouth of the mouth of the Patawomeke (Potomac) at the end of the Little Wicocomico River. The Wicocomico had two villages, one was the Weroance's main village located at the end and slightly North of the Little Wicocomico River, the other village, called Cinquack was located South East of the Weroance's village on the Great Wicocomico River. The Wicocomico had about 520 population, of these 130 were bowmen.

About thirty miles West of the Wicocomico were the Sekacawone, located on the Coane River with a population of about 120, 30 were bowmen.

The tribes that were located beyond the Rappahanock River were considered to be part of the Powhatan Empire, however there is some doubt as to what degree they pledged their loyalty to Powhatan.

In 1652 the Courts of Northumberland County VA directed the Sekacawone's and the Wicocomico's to merge and be moved to South East Lancaster County from their ancestral grounds. The new land ( reservation) consisted of 4400 acres and remained under the control of Northumberland County. It's believed the Cuttatawomen tribe merged with the Wicocomico around 1659 after they relocated to their new location.

From the 1650s until the death of King William Taptico, (the last Tribal Chief of the Wicocomico) in 1719, sufficient information was available to determine the life style and the customs to present a reasonable history of the tribe.

TAPTICO-TAPP

This section will detail the lineage of William Taptico through three generations.

1. WILLIAM TAPPTICO I was born about 1664 in Northumberland County VA and died about 1694 in Northumberland County VA.
WILLIAM I married Elinder Jones about 1689 in Northumberland County VA. She was born August 12, 1674 in Virginia and died about 1719 in Northumberland County VA.
They had only one proven child. William Taptico II

2. WILLIAM TAPTICO II born about 1690 in Northumberland County VA.and died about 1719 in Northumberland County VA. WILLIAM II married Elizabeth Berrick about 1706 in Richmond County VA.She was born January 1689/90 in Richmond County VA and died about 1724 in Spottsylvania County VA.
Shorly after her husbands death Elizabeth began using the surname Tapp,at this point in time the children will be referred to as Tapp.
They had three children. William Tapp III, Charity Tapp, Vincent Tapp.

3. WILLIAM TAPP III born about 1707,Richmond County VA,died January 1791 Culpeper County VA. Married Christian Bourne about 1725 in VA.She was born about 1708 in Essex County VA. and died about 1780 in Fredrick County VA.
CHARITY TAPP born about 1709, Richmond County VA, married BARTHOLEMEW WOOD,about 1724.
VINCENT TAPP born about 1714, Richmond County VA,died about 1751, Fredrick County,VA. Married Elizabeth Bourne about 1735 in VA. She was born in VA and died in VA.

If any Tapp can track their ancestors to any of the three above, they are descendants of Taptico. Our discussion page addresses the question of William I and William II, wives being English or Indian.

Other major family lines in the earlier Taptico/Tapp lineage are; Jones, Berrick,Bourne, Dogget,Fowler, Boch, Jett, and Wright.

DISCUSSION

Two items that are of particular interest to all Tapps and that is the question concerning Taptico I and Taptico II (s) marriage to Elinder and Elizabeth. The Lile's Fulcher, Tapp books states they are European, but offer no proof and after years of research I have not found proof. By the late 1600s and early 1700s, many of the Native Americans had taken english names, the Tapp, Fulcher book may have made some assumptions, not understanding the situation at that time. Until we have proof the assumption will be, the wives were english, not fact, assumption.

Another question that needs serious research. In 1705, Robert Beverley wrote "The History and Present State of Virginia", Beverley wrote; Wicocomico has but three men living, which yet keep up their Kingdom, and retain their Fashion; they live by themselves, separate from all other Indians, and from the English. This is difficult to believe for the following reasons.
APRILL the 19th 1710, William Taptico King of the Wiccocomoco Indians came before the President and Council and presented three Indian Arrows as an acknowledgement for the land he and his Nation holds in Northumberland County which at the desire of sd King is Ordered to be noted in the Council books to perpetuate the claim of the said Nation of Indians to their land.
OCTOBER 19, 1713: Complaint being made to this Board by John Vesey, Chief Man of the Wicocomico Indians that one Richard Ball of Northumberland County hath for severall years; the complaint goes on about the complaint, the important part of this complaint is, the Council directed the Attorney General to take legal action if Ball was wrong.
from "EXECUTIVE JOURNALS OF THE COUNCIL OF COLONIAL VIRGINIA"
Does this sound like a nation with only three men ? On both occasions the English backed the action, they accepted Taptico's tribute, and accepted the complaint from Vesey. This is an area that needs much more research.

TAPP PLANTATION IS MENTIONED IN A STORY OF Trammel's Trace:

Trammel’s Trace was a trade strictly for pack horses. In the year 1824, Andrew Davis helped Nicholas Trammel cut the trail for wagons. This trail began in St. Luis, came down to Fulton, Ark. Trammel’s Trace ran southwestly, crossing from Arkansas into Texas between mounds #102 and #103. According to surveyor notes and description of headright surveys of Texas it continued southwestly crossing U.S. Highway #82, at present day Nash where Nick Trammel once held a camp and stockade corral. Continuing on its southwestly course it bypassed towns of Redwater and Maud (Redwater and Maud had not been settled). It intersected State Highway #8 about one and half miles south of Maud. From present Highway #8 down a country lane and Sam Dicken’s home on by Uray Capps home, the Parker home and the old L. E. Fischer’s home, a very old place, then by the former Tapp Plantation, the Vanderburg home and a grandual curve to Sulphur River, the trace went to Epperson’s Ferry, where in 1936 a monument was erected by the State of Texas, bearing the inscription, "Site of Epperson’s Ferry", "At this crossing, constructed by nature and used by the Caddo Indians, early French and Spanish explorers, and travelers over Trammel’s Trace, 1815, and 1839, mark Epperson, before 1837, established a ferry, used until the construction of wooden bridges. This trace brought in great numbers of pioneers, among who were Stephen F. Austin, James Bowie, David Crockett, and others who died in the Texas Revolution.

Maud Methodist Church writes about Jennie Tapp:

Book: The History of Maud United Methodist Church 1874-1974
Written by:  Joey Clouse - Pastor and F. E. Cooley

"Miss Jenny Tapp and her brother, Mr Lewis Tapp, were born in the 1850's and were brought up on their plantation
with their families. She attended school in Douglasville Texas.  Dorothy Fischer Pullan's grandfather and grandmother
Hunt went to school with Miss Jenny.  She related this information many years later to Mrs. Pullan.   Douglasville had
much culture and refinement as did Jefferson, Texas and Old Boston, Texas.  Later years Miss Jenny moved to New Boston,
Texas along in the 1890's or early 1900's.  Her brother remained on the plantation where he lived until he died.  He and Miss
Jenny are buried in the Reed Cemetery near New Boston.  Both were great benefactorys to many people, the rich and the poor.
At Miss Jenny's death May 19, 1932 she bequeathed the Maud Methodist Church $10,000.00.

Mr. Louis Tapp made a fortune from his $500 worth of stock in Groves Chill Tonic, he bought.  Many thought he had lost
his money, but instead he must multiplied it many times over.  Miss Jennie was his heir.  Both had inherited their father's large estate.

JENNY TAPP

Born 2/23/1858.  Died 5/19/1932

"I, Jennie Tapp, of the County of Bowie, State
of Texas, being of sound mind do hereby write
this my last will and testament.

I will the Methodist Church at Maud, Texas,
$10,000.00 to be used for church and to be
under the direction of the Stewards and

by W. D. Berry and Louise A. Berry. Filed
May 23, 1932 by Roy L. Arnold, County Clerk.
Will was written and signed August 5, 1931 by

Glenn Thrapp writes about the Tapp Cemetery

On the Tapps buried in Center Ridge. Dick & Minnie were Black. They are found on the 1870 Census of Cass Co.,Tx. figure they were slaves that came with Charles Y. Tapp.

Never found proof as to William Tapp, believe that he was a brother to Charles. That line died with Jenny & I have never researched it very hard. I thought that were probably more graves in the Tapp Cemetery  than they moved, ones without stones. [Wm is the brother of Charles per Wm's Will]

Tried to find the original site once with no luck. Wanted to count the depressions, was looking for John G. White, who lived close by.

The Tapps in the Center Ridge Cemetery were moved to their present location when they built Lake Wright Patman in the 1956.  [It is not known for sure if the Tapp land is now in the lake?]

A William S. Tapp , 1846, paid tax in Bowie Co.

Charles Tapp, page 50, 1850 Bowie Co. Census, but no William. William might have been in Cass Co. which was just across the river from Charles. [Wm buried at Tapp/Watson cemetery in CRC]

Found some old notes on Center Ridge:

Tapp, Mima       Born in Person Co.,NC.  (black)
[former slave of Wm Tapp, Will'd to Charles]
Tapp, Dick         Born in Ky.                    (black)
[former slave of Wm Tapp, Will'd to Charles]
Tapp, Eliza         Born in Person Co.,NC   (wife of Wm Tapp)
Tapp, Wm          Born in AL.                    (brother of Charles Y Tapp)

[he was the 2nd hub of Mary White Tapp]

NOTE: The TAPP Cemetery was relocated from 1856
Lands once owned by the Tapp's to Center Ridge Cemetery in Maud TX [CRC].

Where did the WATSON name on the
Tapp/Watson Cemetery come from?

What brought this up?
David Arthur White married Myrtle Watson, after 1930,
I traced her from her parents back to Rhoda Watson.  &
then put the Tapp/Watson cemetery into the mix...
David White is the great grandson of Elias & Anne White.
Grandson of William M White, son of John Lee White.

Rhoda (Rhodia) [Barfield] Watson
was the next door neighbor of  the Tapps in 1850, and very
close to Elias White and his son Benjamin & Polly White, Ben
and Polly and some Tapp's, were relocated from the old Tapp/
Watson cemetery into the Center Ridge Cemetery.  When the
old Tapp/Watson flooded and became part of Wright Patman Lake.

This Watson family arrived in Texas in 1839, Rhoda was the wife
of James Watson, who died in 1842. Rhoda was
born in SC, and 2 children in MS & one in Texas in 1839. Their
Son Cary Watson married Emily Elizabeth Watson Aug 9, 1847,
in Bowie County Texas. He was born 1820 Marion Co SC.  Cary
named a son James, after his father, and Oran, after his uncle Oran.

James Watson born: 1782, married Rhoda Barfield abt. 1817, possibly
in Marion Co SC. James father was a Thomas Watson, mother unknown,
James Watson died Jul 1842, Bowie Co TX.

Rhoda was the daugher of Barrett Barfield and Nancy ???, Rhoda was
born about 1793, Liberty District, Marion Co SC.

Rhoda is on the 1850, 1860 census of Bowie County, her son John
Watson on the 1870, 1880 census, his daughter Mertle on the 1910.

1842 James Watson, husband of Rhoda died July 1842.
1850 Census Rhoda on Farm & next door to Charles & Mary Tapp
1860 Census Rhoda on Farm & next door to Mark Epperson.
Mark's property was adjacent to Rhoda's. Rhoda on the census
has real estate of 3360 valued at 7830, 63yrs born SC.

27. EMILY ELIZABETH8 WATSON (COLEMAN7, LUCINDA "LUCY"6 COLEMAN, JAMES5, ANNE MOURNING4 CHRISTIAN, REBECCA3 NEW, EDMUND2, RICHARD1) was born November 09, 1825 in Warren County, Kentucky, and died December 26, 1908 in Ranger, Eastland County, Texas. She married CARY WATSON August 09, 1847 in Bowie County, Texas, son of JAMES WATSON and RHODA BARFIELD. He was born October 30, 1820 in Marion County, South Carolina, and died December 13, 1904 in Grayson or Eastland County, Texas.

This confirms that the Rhoda Watson on the 1850, and 1860 census
was the wife of the DECEASED, James Watson, the Tapp neighbor.
Appears James Watson Jul 1842 Bowie Co TX.

On the petition to sell the land (as well a s other pages) it lists all of Lewis's children and state s the number of children is 11. William Tapp's will is attached to Second Class Headright c ertificate # 62 issued in 1838 to William Tapp (Red River C o, later Bowie Co.) In the will, dated Nov. 1846, this Will iam gives the land to his "brother Charles Tapp" along wit h some slaves, cows and hogs and "also all the money that f ell to me by heirship that is in North Carolina, Person Cou nty of Lewis Tapp my father deceased." The land certifica te indicates that William came to Texas in April 1836. Th e will also mentions Nancy Hamrick, the wife of Joseph Hamr ick - could that be a sister? (The will does not leave anyt hing to a wife or children, which leads me to believe thi s William was not married?) The will was filed March 1847 a nd probated May 1847.

The death of Miss. Jennie Tapp brought to an end
a family that gave so much back to their community,
that they sprang forth from. Their legacy and deeds
have left a lingering glow upon those communities,
an inspiration to us all, a realization of a higher
purpose of our being, 'Gone but not forgotten'.
