Story of Wm's Head Stone

by:  Glenn E. Thrapp

We built our home in 1976 on some land that my, Grandfather Thrapp, bought in 1916. During the construction I mentioned this little Cemetery in the woods, we went over there and discovered some of the names, on the headstones, were from local families that I knew. Covered with leaves was a 10 to 12 inch rock that someone had scratched "WM" on. This rock really got my interest, who had tried so hard to leave a record of this loved one. Got to thinking about the name Thrapp. Years later I was interviewing Catherine Elliott about my brother-in-law's family, who descended from the White lineage.  She said that when she was a little girl she would go with her parents to Creed Cemetery, and they would spend all day cleaning up the grounds. She said that there was a round top rock with the initials WM scratched on it, that belonged to her Great Grandfather, William White.  The hair stood up on the back of my neck. Within 2 years Catherine had died of cancer. And that is my story.

  Journey 'West'
A Post Civil War Story

West (Wesly) Brown
(ref. household # 9's 1870 census above)

Provided by: Glenn Thrapp

.
I found the story about West Brown written by Holmes Webb & sent to me in the 1980's. Holmes died in 1997 in Williamson Co., TX.

"When Bryant Holmes rode away from his last battlefield at Bentonville, NC. behind him rode a small Mulatto boy the soldiers had found wandering around their camp during the last days before the surrender. The boy did not know his name, where he had lived nor his master's name. He stayed around the soldier's camp where the men gave him food and a place to sleep.

When the men broke camp and started back to Texas they planned to leave the boy with some family on their homeward route. When they reached a settlement on the Mississippi they spent the night on the outskirts. Next morning they told the boy that they would leave him there and that he should ask the people in the settlement for food and a place to stay, offer to "work for his keep". The boy looked at the distant houses, looked at the men who had been kind to him. He began to sob. Silently the battle weary men looked at the lonely boy. Perhaps they saw in him a symbol of the war's tragedy. None spoke. Bryant lifted the boy to back of his horse.

The men rode some distance before one broke the silence. "He'll have to have a name if he is going to Texas. Everybody in Texas has got a name." "He's headin west, so let's call him West." He's gotta have a last name," another said. "He's brown colored, let's call him West Brown." another suggested. It was agreed. The men laughed pleasantly over their solution of a problem of a name for the boy.

West Brown lived on the Holmes farm until he was grown. He was a useful worker who looked after the livestock and assumed other major responsibilities of the farm. When he was grown Bryant gave him a horse, saddle, cows and money to start him on his own. Being a mulatto he was neither white nor black. Blacks did not accept him and neither did the whites. He was a loner. About once a year  he would return to the Holmes place to visit with "Mr. Bryant" and "Miss Amanda," the only family he could call his own"

Glenn

Note from Mike:

It must be remembered that the Holmes Family,
cared for some of the family of William M White,
after his death, they took in Wm's 2nd wife Mary
and several of her children, until they could get their
lives back together.  This I blieve to be the reflection
of a great community, and good hearted folks.

TOP

By 1880, William M White's children are grown, Sarah and Martha are married,
William H White is married, John Lee and Mary Ann White were married by
1885. All had survived the trials of childhood, with the help of family and friends.

Wm's Children would become parents themselves, and some of them would help
others, in their trying times.

When William M White was killed, about 1865, the Civil War was ending, most
folks at little in the material way, hundreds of thousands of southern families were
leaving their eastern homelands for the promise of a better life in Texas.  One can't
imagine the suffering our ancestors endured.  It was they who set the stage of life
for successive generations, and molded such grand qualities, we see in our folks today.

Story tells it that William was murdered by his brother-in-law Lozen Landrum, 1865, shot as he rode a wagon of corn into the barnyard. A disagreement between them had arisen over some crops.

At the Creed Cemetery a Sandstone rock marked with the initials M.W. is believed to belong to our William M White.

Sarah's brother Lee and Seth were part of the Cullin Baker Gang
Sarah was also the sister to Mary Ann, who was William's second wife.

Note:  Lozen Landrum & brother Silas  were living in Cass Co TX, in 1850,
a Simon Rogers was assigned by the courts as their guardian, we now
know that Lozen's father's name was Jesse B. Landrum who died about
1848, leaving Lozen & his brother as orphans.  Lozen is also listed as a
civil war vet.  What happened to him after he shot Wm White is not known
and may never be known as the Bowie Co Court records were destroyed by fire.
Since we now know that Wm White was living in Cass in 1860 and was killed
by Lozen in 1865, it is conceivable that the Trial took place in Cass Co and
not Bowie?  If it was  in Cass Co it is possible there may be a record, as
Cass has one of the longest standing Court Houses in Texas... a future endeavor.

Mike,

I have been to Creed Cemetery with Glenn Thrapp. He was kind enough to
show us the way and I took lots of pictures. It was so exciting.
William married Sarah Louisa Rames in 1852, daughter of Howard
Rames (Reams, Rhems) and Harriet Morris. He married Mary A. Rames abt.
1864, a sister of Sarah.

Children of William and Sarah are: 1) Sarah Jane White b. October 5,
1854 , d. Feb. 7, 1915, Red Lick Cemetery, Bowie Co., Texas. 2)
Martha Evaline White b. Feb. 26, 1856, d. Feb. 2, 1815, Red Lick Cem.
m. Jacob C. Roy abt. 1877, 3) William Howard White b. Nov. 28, 1857
d. Feb. 9, 1934 Red Lick Cem. 4) John Lee White b. Dec. 1859, d.
Aug. 1886.

Child of William White and Mary is Mary Allie White, b. May 2, 1866,
Texarkana, Tx. d. Aug. 22, 1896, Queen City, Texas. I was in Queen
City today and was unable to locate her grave. She married Sidney J.
Mapp December 1, 1885 in Cass County, Hebron Community, Queen City,
Texas. He was the son of William Mapp and Elizabeth Hataway.

Notes:

See the Census above Rames are included among Wm White's
and wives, to make it easier to see the different connections.

Not much is known about the Rames at this time, Sarah and
Mary married Wm M White, the brothers Lee and John (Seth)
were members of the Cullen Baker Gang.  After the death of
Harriet's 1st husband, James Rames, also the mother of Sarah
and Mary, she was said to have married Moses Day.

When the family arrived in TX, is not known.  In Bowie Co they
lived a few doors from Ben White, son of Elias White in 1850.
I would speculate that Wm & Sarah struck up a relationship,
during their childhood's, at this location, that culminated in their
marriage some years later.

Glenn Thrapp of Redwater has said that John (Seth) Rames was
beaten to death by a local mob of folks, in Cass Co attempting
to find out where Cullen Baker was hiding, Glenn further states
that Seth's, sister Mary had him buried, at the Antioch Cemetery
not far from where Wm M White lived in 1860, at the Courtland PO.

The Famous 'six' as they were referred to in the book below sized
Seth, determined to make him tell them where Cullen Baker was
hiding, Seth, was 18 at the time, their names were; Jackson, John
Williams, Bill Dunlap, Green Allen, Peyton Murph, and John Solman.
It is aledged that Lee, Seth's older brother hunted down and
murdered five of the six, responsible to Seth's death.

For those that do not know Cullen Baker, he was a dangerous
criminal who killed numerous people, he formed his gang during or
after the Civil.  Some believed he was a hero, and tried to keep the
War going, most however, saw him as a cold-blooded killer, it
depends on your perpective, lots of articles on this person... his
story is on the
Family History Web Page

Reconstruction Desperado",
by Barry A. Crouch & Donaly E. Brice

William White & Wife Sarah are mentioned in this book
on page 150, says of William White, "...A South Carolina
native had been able to acquire some land and
personal property in Cass County".
.. Mentions only Lee M
as living with Wm & sister, but John (Seth) was also there in
1860 census, they were listed as Lee & Jno Raines.

Extracts from Glenn Thrapp
Rames connection to Cullen Baker,
Mary White is also mentioned:

The Borderlands and Cullen Baker by Yvonne Vestal, page 74 "While Baker lay wounded in his father-in-law's home in the community not far from the Smith home, Preston Scott and Green Allen of present day Queen City-Atlanta area organized a posse and rode to the Smith home on Saturday afternoon December 28, 1867. They were seen in Bright Star by many of Baker's friends and one of them, 15 year old Seth Rames, darted through the woods To the Foster home to warn Baker the soldiers were coming."

"...page 76, Seth had not gone into hiding with his brother and Baker but instead swam the Cypress and went to his sister's house (in present day Queen City area. Six men were appointed to make the boy talk, and they rode to Seth's sister's house, called the boy out and told his sister that not a hair on his head would be harmed. The men appointed to make the boy talk were John Williams, John Jackson, Bill Dunlap, Green Allen, Peyton Murph and one other. Near sunset, the six men and Seth stopped on the side of the road east of present day Texas and Pacific Railroad tracks that run through Atlanta and Queen City and about ten miles north of Atlanta. The boy was shot in the face and breast and left lying in the woods for the vultures and wild hogs.

"Rufus Day heard the shots and suspecting what was the matter, went that night, found the body, dug a grave, wrapped the body in a blanket and there, alone and unaided, buried the boy who gave up his life rather than betray a friend. Word was quietly sent to Mrs. Mary White, the sister of Seth and in about ten days Mrs. White, Rufus Day and Jim Clements went to the temporary gravesite carrying a coffin with them. They exhumed the body and  bore it to old Courtland Church where it received the rites of a Christian burial, surrounded by friends and neighbors who ran the risk of incurring the enmity of the vigilantes by very act of being present at the boy's funeral."

This is almost word for word for what T. U. Taylor wrote in 1926. Taylor says he was 14 years old (none of the authors ever looked at a census) 'Seth Rames' father was half Indain and Seth was quarter Indian but he inherited all the Indian fidelity to his tribe and his stoicism under punishment.

"The writer recently visited the scene of this tragedy of tragedy. He stood on the side of the temporary grave of Seth Rames in company with Jim Clements who were with the sister of Seth Rames, Mrs. Mary White, ten days after he was killed to re-bury the boy at Courtland."

Glenn Thrapp Writes:

"I believe that T. U. Taylor is the best account of what
happened in any matters concerning Cullen Baker."

"Page 67, Chapter VII
59.  Forks of the Road.
The parting of
Lee Rames and Cullen Baker December 10, 1868."

"...It is conceded by all that Lee Rames acted as a balance wheel or as a restraining influence on Baker on many occasions. The boy, Seth Rames, a brother of Lee, had been killed without a chance for his life. When Tom Orr was hung, it was Lee Rames who, noticing a sign of life, threw a coat over his face with the reason to keep the buzzards from picking out his eyes. Again, at The Scarborough place in the early morning raid, Baker would not let Lee Rames wreak his vengeance on Frank Scarborough for his participation in the killing of Seth Rames. These two circumstances are recalled by old timers. Also it is said that Lee Rames was not in the original party that went to the home of Howell Smith on Christmas night, 1867, but was met on the road and persuaded to go over to Smith's home. He went under the impression that the object was to whip some negroes for some loose talk."

"Matters had reached such a stage in the early days of December, 1868, that the time for a break between Baker and Rames was ripe. An open quarrel ensued December 10, 1868, and it is said that with many oaths Lee Rames invited Baker then and there to " shoot it out" and stage an impromptu duel. For some reason Baker declined and he (Lee Rames) became very bitter and offered to exchange guns with Baker and give him every advantage.

Friends intervened and prevented hostilities by suggesting that the two men separate. They were approaching the forks of the road near the present town of Queen City and it was agreed that they would separate, one taking one road and one the other and that their men should follow either one as each might elect. All the crowd followed Lee Rames with the exception of "Dummy" Kirby who went to his death with Baker about one month later. Lee Rames advised his crowd to disband and leave the country. Lee Rames proceeded to wind up his affairs and took the supposed trip to Mississippi in the hunt for Jackson and later, on a good horse, headed through northwest for California. This is the last ever heard of him. The writer has talked to his relatives and not one of them has heard anything further."

Glenn Thrapp

Notes: Dated Nov 30, 2016 - From: Glenn Thrapp

Subject: William White's (son of Elias) land near Mush Island

"...The Texarkana survey shows Mush Island. Some where I read that Cullen Baker hid-out there, at one time.

Also, the 206 acres that William White had on the Sulphur River, was close to this location. The 1860 census has William living in Cass Co.,
believe that he was on the high bluff across Sulphur River.

Mush Island was formed by Elliott's Creek & Sulphur River. I remember before the dam was built there was a long section on both sides of
the hwy that the land was low & had water on it..."

9. Swamp Fox Of The Sulphur or Life And Times of Cullen Montgomery Baker by
    T.U. Taylor(hand written-Written 1932

Here is part of an interesting letter written by A.L. Burford, attorney at
     law,Oct.18,1965:

"Dean T. U. Taylor for some forty years head of the Engineering School at the
University of Texas, was also interested in Texas history and some of the
state's noted desperadoes. In the 1920's he spent part of two summer
vacations in this area interviewing old settlers who knew Baker and secured
data on Baker's life and activities. He finally located an old book published
in 1870 written by the man who claimed to have killed Baker and this book is
in the Texas Archives at Austin. In addition he purchased the entire file of
the old Jefferson Jimplicute which contained some stories about Baker. Dean
Taylor, after accumulating these facts, wrote his own life of Baker which
seemed to be full and complete but he died before he had revised it so that
      the attached contains some duplications."
10. There is a book by Ed Bartholmew that I have read, but don't have a copy.
11. Book writtem by (Thomas) Orr that is/was in the Texarkana Public Library.
Baker hanged Orr over a woman, Lee Rames needed the rope & cut Orr down
before he died. Orr didn't think highly of Baker.

All these books differ some, but you can get a pretty good picture of the times.
