Obituary of Ramona [Roberts] Segrest

SHREVEPORT, LA - Ramona Segrest went home to be with her Savior on November 30, 2011. She had a beautiful life with her family, her many friends and her students throughout the years in education. She was a best friend to many, a favorite teacher <http://www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/teachers/?personid=154845003&affiliateID=1762> to numerous students and a stranger to none.

Ramona was a high school teacher of History, a Special Education teacher, A University teacher of Deaf Education, a GED teacher at a correctional facility and a Principal at a special needs school over a fifty year span in three different states.

Ramona was born in Houston, TX on January 23, 1932 to Floyd and Roma Roberts. She and her brother Cyril were children of deaf parents. Ramona became an advocate for the deaf at an early age. She was a deaf interpreter for the Billy Graham Crusades at the age of 17. She continued the work with the deaf by starting the Deaf Action Center in Monroe, LA and being an interpreter for deaf in many churches and courts.

She is survived by 4 children: son, Jake Segrest and wife A.J., daughter, Darra and husband Wayne Marionneaux, son, Kinley Segrest and wife Judy and daughter, Janna Segrest. 7 grandchildren: Amie, Leigh, Nicole, James, Chanel, Tyler and Sierra; 2 great grandchildren: Jack and James.

Memorial services will be held at Haynes Avenue Baptist Church in Shreveport, LA on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at 10:30 AM. Dr. Mike Anderson will officiate. Always the teacher, Ramona chose to donate her body to science for further educational purposes. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Hunt, Dr. Massingill and the staff at the Christus Schumpert Cancer Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christus Schumpert Cancer Center.
