Note from Mike White:
Halifax was just north of CASWELL Co NC, just across the border on the VA
Side.   Our Robert White Sr was also a Blacksmith.  Robert White lived in
Caswell Co NC from 1781-1787, then moved to SC.

Note from Mike White:
John Dennis Sr married Millicent Jones, 5 May 1772 Halifax Co VA
Daughter of Richard Jones Sr - see his Deed & Will Below.

Why is John Dennis & Richard Jones important to our
Robert White Sr:

John Dennis's Will tied him to a Robert White and gives us proof
that this Robert may be ours, possibly lived in Halifax, late 1770's.

The Richard Jones of Halifax VA Deed which has Robert White and
John Dennis as Witnesses, may prove Robert's residence in VA.

The Richard Jones Will, ties John Dennis to this Jones family
as John Dennis married Richard's daughter, Millecent Jones,
    mentioned, in his Will.

New information about this family:
John Dennis has been very vague in the past. We have found information in
Virginia that may help us with his date of birth and many other facts.
We have the
Halifax County Virginia Heads of Families in 1785.
List of Joseph Haynes Dennis Estate
0 White Souls
1 Dwelling

As we have seen John Dennis in all our South Carolina records, and have
found several reports of him being in Lunenburg County Virginia.
Families that lived near John Dennis (Newberry Co. S.C.) were found in
Virginia also.

Dennes, John 1639, by John Saines, ______Co
Denine, John, 1635, by Wm. Clarke, Henrico Co.

The “Dennis Estate” date of 1785 is very important. It is the connecting
link for the Dennis family from South Carolina to Virginia. Also the fact
that John Dennis married Ann Creighton.

We found a John Dennis Sr. and John Dennis Jr. in the census of South
Carolina, 1790. Now we see the Will of John Dennis Jr. in Virginia naming
his father, John Dennis Sr. The son died before the father, giving us two
generations of our line. This will is in the early Virginia records, giving
us the reason for a “Dennis Estate”

Military Records from the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, the
William and Mary College Quarterly, and Tyler's uarterly:

23 April 1778:
John Dennis took oath as Captain in room of Capt. Munfo
rd.
Item 123 - 4/23/1778 John Dennis produced a commission from etc. appointing him Captain in room of Capt. Mumford, and took the oath.
Tennessee Records:
The Old Dennis Burial Ground is located in McMinn Co. Tenn. I have this
information from the Tennessee Archives, recorded by a group in 1946
"Two brothers, Creighton and Mark Dennis who were born in Cocke County, later moving to McMinn County, entered large boundaries of land for this cemetery. the first person buried here, was Amanda, daughter of Creighton Dennis. One acre has been deeded for the descendants of the two brothers. The location is ten miles west of Athens. Follow Athens-Decatur Road to Idlewild, turning there to Pine Hill School Road to the farm of Joel Dennis. There are fourteen unmarked graves. The cemetery has an index.

Halifax County Gunsmith's

(Source: The gunsmith in colonial Virginia)

... Giving example, the book mentions the following;

"...Wm Alexander, a gunsmith, employed an indentured silversmith in his shop.
John Dennis, a gunsmith of HALIFAX Co VA, owned "a Parcel of Silver Smiths Tools..."
(source: Halifax Co, Will Book No. I (1773-83), pp. 279-80; Geo.Weedon Acct bk.

Theory:

Many thanks to fellow researcher Deborah Parks for pulling together
the details & facts, on John Dennis from Williamsburg to Halifax,
which has made possible the following theory.

"John Dennis formerly a journeyman blacksmith/silversmith under the Tutelage of William Geddy of Williamsburg City VA, known as
the James Geddy Foundry, completes his Journeyman ship, and moves to Halifax Co VA about 1771, at some point while in Halifax
and at least by 1775, John Dennis and a Robert White (who we believe might be our Robert), meets up with John Dennis, it is obvious
from John's Will of 1779, that this Robert White was also a Blacksmith, as John Dennis, in his Will 1779, states "...my smith tools now
being cared for by Robert White now in the Carolina's...", he was Willing his smith tools to his son John Jr.  Is possible that Robert White
was in his Journeyman ship or already a Blacksmith, setout on his own, being loaned a set of Smith tools to start his own business, however
it would appear this Robert White worked for John Dennis Sr, and was well trusted by Dennis, enough that he lent him a set of smith tools,
it has also been suggested, that this gesture by John would indicate a possible family connection, theory of course...

The Will statement "NOW IN THE CAROLINA'S", suggest this Robert White use to live in Halifax Co VA, we know our Robert White
was living in Caswell Co NC, south of Halifax Co VA, from 1781 to 1788, we also know that Robert's father in law William Whitehead
was at this time living in Granville Co NC, that was bordered with Caswell Co NC (pre-1791), as he buys land in Caswell, 1778, Robert
is serving in the Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1781, however, as many, troops were at this time, on Furlough frequently, during the war
when they were not in battle or a campaign, sent home to plant crops/harvest and protect their families from local Tories." Robert White on
being discharged from service 1781, joins his family on Hogan's creek, 342 acres of unrecorded land, mostly likely from his father in law,
Wm Whitehead, as he also gave his son Thomas land the was not recorded, however, each had to pay the taxes on the lands being worked.
When lands were inherited or given as a gift, often went unrecorded, there were no records of these lands being sold, by Robt. or Thomas.

To complete this theory, Robert may have been in Granville Co NC west of Caswell, at least by 1775'ish, as he marries Mildred Whitehead
and they have their first child William Nov 11, 1776.  In 1776 Wm Whitehead was living in Granville, near the Tar River NC, in Goshen
district 1778, up against old pre-1791, Caswell Co NC. Logic tells me this is where Robert White married Milly Whitehead, probably at her
fathers home or church. Then departed for his 6 years of service in the Rev War.  There was Robert White living in Granville, in the
upper left corner of Granville, also bordered with old Caswell, pre-1791 border, with Halifax VA just north above Granville, I believe
at the time, this was County Line District of Granville, also, named Country Line District in 1778.

Remember Robert White's grandson's letter of 1871 "old Grandfather White, was born near the Roanoke River VA, and I am informed
he also lived on the Tar River for a time..."

The Search Continues.

Colonial Williamsburg - Website

http://www.history.org/history/teaching/founder.cfm

"Diversity of work and in the labor force offered definite advantages to the colonial tradesman. William Geddy employed John Dennis as a journeyman founder. Women frequently worked alongside their husbands, especially in the country where labor was especially scarce. Raw, newly refined metal was not readily available, therefore tradesmen relied on buying up broken or worn out metal goods. These metals came from customers or from other tradesmen. One good source of brass for the Geddy foundry was Alexander Craig, a local harness maker. Brass was used to make hardware for harness. Worn or broken pieces were melted down to make new items."

The James Geddy Foundry - Williamsburg City VA

http://www.history.org/almanack/places/geddy/geddyfou.cfm

William Jr. operated foundry for 30 years

The Geddy foundry had two masters (or owners), brothers William and David, and at least two apprentices, William's son William Jr., and an orphan named Thomas Dugar. An older man, John Dennis, was employed as a journeyman. It is not known whether William Geddy used slave labor in the foundry, but William Geddy Jr., did own a slave named Charles who was a blacksmith. There may have been others present in the shop as well. William preserved and expanded his father's business and operated it successfully for more than 30 years.

(Journeyman ship status lasted about 4 years for Colonial Blacksmiths, this after 7 or 8 years as an apprentice
typically, after the Journeyman ship, one could establish his own blacksmith shop)

Richard Jones
(Son of Richard Jones)

married: Martha Erskine

John Dennis married Millicent Jones the daughter of Richard & Martha Jones Sr, May 5th, 1772 Halifax.
Millicent married 2nd: Robert Erskine Chambers May 2, 1780 of Halifax County Virginia

Notes from Deborah Parks:

According to Welford Jones (an amazing Jones researcher) Richard Jones (father of Millicent) was a member of the Loyal Land Company https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyal_Company_of_Virginia  I don’t know the details of this company – Welford has thoroughly researched it – but the company probably had some Williamsburg connections – hence John Dennis marrying one of Richard Jones’ daughters.  Also,

Loyal Company of Virginia - Wikipedia

Loyal Company of Virginia or Loyal Land Company was a land speculation company formed in Virginia in 1749 for the purpose of recruiting settlers to western Virginia. The company continued operations until May 15, 1776 when Virginia declared independence from Great Britain though litigation on behalf of and against the company continued until 1872.

After John Dennis died, Millicent married Robert Erskine Chambers.  Richard Jones' wife was Martha Erskine.

The other Richard Jones who died in  1787 was from Hanover.  There appears to have been a group of young people from Hanover who went to the Halifax/Mecklenburg area.  Did you notice that his will didn’t go through probate until 1797?

Notes from Mike:

There is some evidence that 'A' JOHN DENNIS lived in CASWELL County NC,
with this said, it is conceivable John Dennis moved from Caswell north across the
border into HALIFAX, and that Robert White of Caswell never lived in Halifax.
Thoughts we should remember if pursuing this theory...

Many folks from Halifax and other counties of VA moved into Caswell Co NC just
across the border. During and after the Revolutionary War.

I thought I would add these few pieces of evidence that a Robert White lived in Halifax,
as someday it may turn out to be our Robert.

A deep and serious look into the Records of Halifax and Caswell is required at some
point to see if Robert left Deeds etc behind.  We know that Robert White Sr was a
Blacksmith, and farmer in SC, my feeling is, he may have been just a Blacksmith in
VA and NC and not a land owner, which may explain the sparse land records.

However, if son Ben White was correct on Robt's Obituary, that he served in the Rev War,
there may be a Bounty Grant of sorts that he sold at some point in VA or NC... "Born
Near the Roanoke River VA in 1743", according to grandson Isaac Murphy, places our
Robert squarely in the above described areas, and makes this Robert a Candidate for ours...

The Will of Mr Dennis written in 1779, suggest that the said Robert White, in this theory,
may have moved across the border into Caswell Co NC prior to 1779, or it suggest that
John Dennis may have moved from Caswell to Halifax or had property on both sides.

Do not find a Whitehead in Halifax, my further theory is, Robert did not know Wm
Whitehead of Caswell until about this time, may have married Milly Whitehead, in Caswell,
prior to 1779.  My personal belief at this time is Robert White's KNOWN First Son,
William White (b.1776), was not the child of Milly, but of a unknown 1st wife of Robt Sr.
further that the marriage of Robt & Milly took place after 1776. See the above discussion
on this thinking ...

If a deed in Halifax and Caswell can be located for this said Robt White, it may show
his Wife in Halifax & Milly in Caswell, releasing dower... wouldn't that be perfect...

What we do know for sure is Wm Whitehead lived in Granville, Caswell NC and Laurens
Co SC and that he had a daughter named Milla White, born about 1763, which from
Robert White Sr's of Union Co SC, on the 1800 Census, shows Milly's age 26-45, which
places her in Wm Whitehead's daughter Milla's age bracket.

We further know that a Robert White had land in Laurens Co SC along Cane Creek, the
same area as Wm Whitehead, and sold this land in 1814 with Wm White and son in law,
Lewis Rhodes as Witness, sold to Charter Nichols, administrator to the Estate of William
Whitehead, I have not found a PURCHASE of this land by Robt White, was this land
Milly's given to her after her father's death???   Grant lands?  I have searched the available
deed books at the Laurens Library, and have never found a purchase of this land, which
in turn leaves me favoring the belief that this land was Milly's.

To date, this theory, is the best I can find and offer some support... Hopefully, in the future
I will be able to locate documents in Caswell or formerly Orange Co NC and Halifax formerly,
Old Brunswick Co VA, and documents showing Robert White Sr lived a time in Lauren's,
formerly, Old 96th District,  or that the land he sold in 1814, belonged to Milly... to make the
final link, in he Search for Robert White prior to 1788.

IN ALL FAIRNESS:

I must state that "all of the above could be COMPLETELY UNRELATED!

Miscellaneous Notes from the Past:

Notes from Ann Hilke: July 20, 2005
jlhilke@mindspring.com

[Caswell Co NC. - Halifax Co VA Pittsylvania Co VA]

I found a reference to a suit against Hampton White, William Whitehead, and Robert White
The three evidently owed William Holderness a debt.  They lost the case.  I do not think the
case file survived.  I have another place I want to check at some point.

I took some time to check Hampton White of Halifax County in some of the books at the library.
Found Hampton mentioned in Halifax County in several books.  Did not take the time to copy.

Also found a will of Jeremiah White of Pittsylvania County written 28 April 1788.  He mentions
his son
Hamilton and son Robert.

There is a Rev. War pension application for Hampton White of Halifax County.

Found an Epaphroditus White being the father of Hampton White
Did not find a will for Epaphroditus.

Not sure if we are talking about one or two Hampton White's.  However, this could be helpful for
our connection to Robert.

As an aside, Jeremiah White lived next door to Francis Wisdom in the 1780's.

This will probably related to the Epaphroditus mentioned above^
