Marriage Record of Lois Claire White and Dr Samuel Robert Patton:

Hart County Marriages.....White, Lois Claire - Patton, Samuel Robert October 31, 1909

File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Harris Hill http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00011.html#0002514 July 4, 2006, 4:16 pm The Schley County News Friday, Nov. 5, 1909 No. 43 WHITE-PATTON

Early Sunday morning at the home of the bride's parents on Benson Street, Miss Lois Claire White and Dr. Robert Patton were united in marriage, Rev. O.L. Kelly officiating.

The parlor was artistically decorated with cut flowers which added a dainty note of color to the back ground of ferns and palms.

Owing to the recent bereavement of the bride's family, the ceremony was a very quiet one, only the relatives and a few chosen friends were present.

The bride is the cultured daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.H. White and has endeared herself to hosts of friends all over the state as well as here in Hartwell where she has won an envied place in the esteem of all by her charming traits of character.

She is a graduate of the State Normal School at Athens and for two years was a valuable teacher of the Hartwell Institute.

Dr. Patton is a well known young business man of our town and has numbers of friends who wish for him and his bride all happiness in their new life.

Dr. and Mrs. Patton left on the six o'clock train for South Georgia, where they will be for a short while, after which they will be at home to their friends at their new home on Benson Street.---The Hartwell Sun.

Additional Comments: (Transcriber's Note: Dr. Robert Patton was Samuel Robert Patton, son of Samuel Asa Patton and Mary Ella Woodall of Concord. Dr. Patton was a dentist.)

Census Records:

NOTES:
The 1830 census reveals, in the household of SARAH White, there is a lady 50-60 yrs old, this has to Elizabeth Boatman White wife of Wm White, who died in 1829, on either side of Sarah are relatives of Elizabeth White, and Sarah. Also, indicates that Wm & Elizabeth's children are living in the household of Samuel White.

Next door to Elias White is a Elizabeth Murrell, this probably the mother of
Samuel White's wife, Nancy, whose husband David was deceased, in 1822.

SAMUEL WHITE 1840 1100010000000 1000010000000

On the 1830 the 2 males and 5 females are probably his Brother & Sisters, he cared for after their fathers death, mother is living with Sarah in 1830, by 1840 all would have been of age to live on there own. Some even in 1830. It is obvious in 1830 that Samuel is to young to have most of these children, some older than he, Jane for one, however, the one female 40-50 presents a problem, it is not mother Elizabeth, she was born 1778, older.

**Notes on Household 29 - 29 above:
This James W White is the son of a James W White on
the 1860 Census, as Wm F White was living next door
in 1870, there is a possibility that the James W White on
the 1860 is the Son of Robert White Jr. This James was
said to have died in 1843, he was dismissed from the
Cedar Springs Baptist Church in Spartanburg in 1841.
Bible records are well known for there mistakes, the age
in 1860 matches that age of James W White son of Robt.
I post it here for the Records, though it may not be ours:

  "Pleasant Grove Baptist Church"

(Cemetery Located right outside the limits of Lavonia GA right on the
County line between Franklin & Hart Counties, but still within
the limits of Franklin County, Lavonia GA.)

From the " History of Franklin Co GA:
From Judy Winn

According to History of Franklin County, Georgia, they show Nancy H. White as being born 20 years after she died which doesn't sound good.  They do have the same death date that you have.  It shows Martha A. E. White b. 6 Dec 1836 d. 9 Apr 1900; Rebecca White b. 1876 d. 1970; and T. Watson White b.1853 d. 1925.  note: at this time we do not know about the Nancy H White born 20 yrs after Samuels wife nor Rebecca White.

The book in another section has a short history for Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church was constituted on the 16th day of May, 1856, by a presbytery composed of the following Brethren: John G. York and Samuel B. sanders, ministers; and Joseph Jackson, George Reed, John McFarland, Lewis Childs and Robert Tribble, deacons.  the number of members who entered into this organization was 13, whose names are as follows: Lemuel N. Tribble, Elvany J. Tribble, Reuben D. Adams (deacon), Margaret Adams, Mary Adams,  A. F. Walters, Mary Walters, Samuel White, Nancy White, Thomas P. Jones, Margaret A. Jones, Abner Burgess and Vina Walters.

Samuel B. Sanders preached at a brush arbor not far from where the meeting house now stands, during the summer months for two years before the church was constituted.

The minutes show that they held their first conference on the 17th day of Mary, 1856, the day following their organization.  Lemuel N. Tribble was elected church clerk and Samuel B. Sanders was elected pastor.  The church joined the Baptist State Convention of August 15, 1857.

A notation found in the minute book of 1888-1896 shows "Pleasant Grove Baptist Church rebuilt 1895 and sealed in 1897..."  The present church building was completed in 1949 and additions have since been made.

Pastors who have served are: Samuel B. Sanders, James T. W. vernon, Jesse Brown, H. M. Barton, James H. Sullivan, I H. Goss, J.R. Ivie, John D. Adams, Jesse Brown, L.T. Weldon, P.F. Crawford, J.H. SAMUEL WHITE

"History of Hart County Georgia 1933"
(Hart County was formerly Franklin County - until Dec 7, 1853)

Samuel White, son of William White, was born in South Carolina,
March 2, 1808. He married Nancy Murrell, daughter of David and
Elizabeth Harlan Murrell, in 1832. Nancy Murrell was born May 12, 1804,
and died March 22, 1888.

Mr. White moved from South Carolina to Georgia and settled in Franklin
(Later Hart) County GA.

To Samuel White and wife, Nancy Murrell White, were born the follow-
ing children:
=========================
1.
Dr. William Franklin White, who married Mary A. Jackson,
          daughter of Joseph Jackson.

2. Martha A. E. White, never married.

3. Madison White, killed in the War Between the States.

4.
Dr. David Monroe White, who married ............. Gilliland.

==========================

Samuel White was the first County Treasurer of Hart County, which
office he held for six years, 1854-1859, inclusive.

He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He died September
12, 1895, and he and his wife are buried in the cemetery at Pleasant Grove.

Elizabeth Murrell, wife of David Murrell, and a daughter of George
Harlan and wife, Anna Breede Harlan, was born in 1778, and died in 1841.

George Harlan, son of Aaron Harlan, Jr., and wife, Sarah Hollingsworth
Harlan, was born in Chatham County, S. C., in 1756, and died in 1813.
George Harlan was a soldier in the War of the Revolution, serving as a
in Captain Henry Keys' Company, Chester County (Pa.), Militia
in Pennsylvania. He also served as a private in the 6th Comapny of the
8th Battalion of Chester Couinty (Pa.), Militiam under Colonel Patterson
Bell, 1778.

George Harlan was a direct descendant of Valentine Hollingsworth, Sr.,
a member of the famous Hollingsworth family, widely known and honored
in the United States.

A brief, yet interesting and highly entertianing
sketch of the Hollingsworth family history is given herewith.
==============
"Descendants of Valentine Hollingsworth, Sr."

"The Hollingsworths have held their own all along the ages. they were
an old Saxon family said to have settled in the northeastern part of Cheshire,
as early as 1022, in which year the ancestral estate, Hollingsworth Manor,
in Cheshire, was purchased. The name represents a locality, from the estate
of that name, near Mottram, in the county in question. The name comes
from the two words, 'holly' and 'worth,' a farm, meaning a farm of holly
trees. Annals dating from the Norman conquest, speak of 'The hundred
of Hamstan,' and one of the Manors mentioned in these ancient books is
that of Hollingsworth Manor, situated on the edge of the great woods of
Macclesfield. The visitation of Cheshire by the offical herald in the year
1850 includes 'John Hollingsworth, Gent.' and 'Robert Hollingsworth,'
among the gentry residing in the hundred of Macclesfield.

"A further record speaks of Robert Hollingsworth of Hollingsworth Hall,
from whom the family is descended, and who was Magistrate for the counties
of Chester and Lancaster. The church of the family and the hall, both
several centuries old, are still standing, and upon both are emblazoned the
family Coat of Arms. The late owner, Captain Robert Hollingsworth, the
last representative of the English branch of the family, died in 1865. The
estate is said to include 621 acres and to be valued at 20,000 pounds. Pic-
turesque red-berried holly trees abound upon the estate, and when one realizes
its nearness to the edge of the Macclesfield woods, the arms and crest handed
down for generations acquire a picturesque signficance. The Tinctures of
the shield are azure, suggestive of the blue sky, argent, of the silvery streams
that flow through the woodlands, and vert. of the green leafage of the
forest trees.

"The virtues of these colors are equally beautiful, expressing loyality, in-
nocence and love. The Crest is a stag, recalling the Saxon Earl of Cheshire
and merry hunting scenes, and three glistening holly leaves suggest Christ-
mas in merry England. Motto. 'Learn to suffer what must be borne, or,
bear patiently what must be borne.' The usurpation of that Saxon shire
by the Norman Earl, Hugh Lupus, no doubt suggested the motto. At any
rate, the records sate that these freemen of Hollingsworth and the seven
other manors that make up Macclesfield, paid their yearly tax to the usurping
Earl and held their manors in undisturbed possession.

"It is probably that the Hollingsworth went over to Ireland from Eng-
land with other planters early in the 17th Century.

"The name Hollingworth, Hollinsworth, and Hollingsworth.
The last spelling has been clung to by a large majority of the decendants
of the founder of the family in America, who was Valentine Hollingsworth,
and who came to the New World from Ireland in 1682, the year in which
William Penn arrived in the Delaware, in front of which is now the city
of Philadelphia, Pa. The Hollingsworth family was noted for its enterprise
and industry, and many of its members were largely engaged in the manu-
facture of flour, and were the owners of a number of mills on the branches
of the Elbe River in Cecil County, Md., New Castle County, Del., also in
Virginia, South Carolina, and in other states, and later of shipyards, steel
mills, etc."

Our Gratitude to Dr James Reid
for locating this family Treasure:

================================

"Our long lost Brother is finally
found, he came, he raised  his
siblings and cared for his mother ,
in time of loss, raising a family
bestowed with, equally, grand
qualities, such a person will not
be forgotten, for in his sacrifices,
he becomes the mirror, that reflects
for generations to come, a light
that shines ever brighter... in this
way he has been immortalized. So
good to know that our brother is
indeed resting in honest peace, for
all eternity."
                       White Family

Mike's Comments on the Samuel White's History:

The White's are deeply ingrained into the families
of Harlan and Breed; to name two, one via marriage
of our Elias White to Anna Gibbs, & Elias White's
daughter Susan White married Samuel Harlan Jr.
whose father was Samuel Harlan Sr.,  whose
brother was George Harlan, I believe this,
the one spoken of, in Samuel's History, as
they both share the common father, Aaron Jr.
and Sarah Hollingsworth Harlan.

Nancy's parents are from Union Co SC.

NOTES From Mike:

In the 'Warrant of Appraisement', George Harlan is
probably the brother or Elizabeth Harlan Murrell,
James M. Bagwell is the husband of Martha Murrell, the
sister of Nancy Murrell, wife of our Samuel White.
John Gibbs, probably the brother of Anna Gibbs,
wife of my Elias White... They had left for Texas in 1846.
John was a Reverend, 'Rev. John Gibbs' (1810-1880).
R. M. Robinson was married to Elizabeth Murrell, also a
sister of our Nancy.  At this time I am not sure if the others
were related to the family, Gist, Smith, Roger's.

The children's names are without coma's on the original will.
Wm White signed as witness to the 1822 Will, of David Murrell,
this most likely, Samuel White's father.
Samuel White is one of two to file a petition to sell the balance
of David's Estate, in Nov 13, 1848, the year Elizabeth Murrell
dies, mother to Nancy Murrell, wife of Samuel White.
Samuel authorized to sell the goods & chattels of David's Estate,

What solidifies Samuel and Nancy (Murrell) White's connection
to David Murrell, as a daughter is the story of their family in
1) "History of Hart County Georgia 1933", this states that
"Samuel White married Nancy Murrell, daughter of David and
Elizabeth Harlan Murrell".  I am convinced that Anne H, listed in
the Will, is Nancy.  In Census records she is listed as Nancy A, I
suggest this is Nancy (Anne) H. Murrell White.
2) In the estate
Papers, is stated, 'Nancy H. White formally, Nancy H. Murrell...
wife of the Petitioner...[referring to Saml White]".

In 1830, Elizabeth Murrell, wife of David is living next door to my
Gr...Grandfather, Elias White, Samuel White is living about six
households from Elizabeth Murrell, & dau. & future wife 'Nancy'.
Samuel and Nancy marry about 1832, they are living in Spartanburg
at the time of Nancy's mother's death.
1848 Nancy's mother dies, 1851, Samuel's mother dies, and in Oct.
of 1851, Samuel and family move to Hart County Georgia, where
they live the rest of their lives.
