Notes from Mike:

I believe this Elizabeth is the Daughter of Wm White,
that the Elizabeth dismissed Nov 27, 1858, from
Cedar Springs Baptist Church, Sptg, is in fact the
same Elizabeth who is Received at Goucher Creek Church by
letter, on Nov 20th, 1858, and further, after reviewing the Census
and 'Will' of Edward Lipscomb, which in fact shows his 2nd wife
as 'Elizabeth Lipscomb', in addition to the Murphy Letter , I am con-
fident we have found Elizabeth White daughter of Wm & Elizabeth
(Boatman) White, of course a marriage record would really be the ultimate...
For now the 2nd marriage of Edward Lipscomb can only be verified by his
Will and Probate File #2743.

The Evidence laid out below shows good evidence to this relationship:

TOP

Cedar Springs Baptist Church Minutes:

July 22, 1833 (Page 05)...Rec. Elizabeth White by Baptism.
Nov 27, 1858 dismissed [Elizabeth - dau of Wm & Elizabeth White]

Goucher Creek Baptist Church Minutes:

Nov 20, 1858 (Page XXX) Elizabeth Lipscomb joined by Letter.

Minutes of Goucher Creek
Provided by: Betty Dill

Notes from Mike:
From the Church minutes above, we see Elizabeth White departing Cedar Springs,
Nov 27, 1858, and received at "BY LETTER", at Goucher Creek Baptist on the
Nov 20, 1858.  I would estimate Elizabeth's marriage to Edward Lipscomb prior
to Nov 20, 1858 or there abouts...

Marriage Mentioned in Family Letter:

In a Family Letter dated March 17, 18__ (probably mid 1870's)
From Jason Wiley Murphy to his sister Edy Jackson:

"...Father White lives his upper plantation near Thompsons cross roads is well. Cousin Ginna Coggins live at the same place. Sally & Susan lives at the old place. Backael? at the Village. Betsy married Lipskum lives on Jocher Creek has no children. Wm in Georgia. Lucy dedd. Samuel in Alabama. Susan has one son married. Rachael two daughters, Lucy one. I don't know how many Ginny has married..."

Note: All of the Children mentioned above are William & Elizabeth's, though James White
the oldest son of Wm is not mentioned, he is named in Isaac P Murphy's letter.
"Betsey is Elizabeth White", married a Lipskum (Lipscomb), moved to Jocher Creek,
          (Goucher Creek).

TOP

1860 Spartanburg Census further supports our belief
of the relationship between Edward and Elizabeth:

1.  Elizabeth (Betsy) was said to have married "Lipskum (Lipscomb) and moved to Jocher Creek
     (probably Goucher Creek)."

     Found the following:

**1860 Census indicates an Elizabeth '47' years old, living with a Edward Lipscomb in
the Moultrie PO.  In 1850 this same Edward, is living with his first wife Juliet who I
now know to be Juliet Lancaster, who died in 1857.  Have studied Edward's children
the oldest was born in 1817.  Our Elizabeth White was born 1813, a perfect match in age,
compared to the 1860 census. Edward's youngest child is, Nathan Lipscomb, who is in
both the 1850 and 1860 census, living with his father, Nathan was also the Estate
administrator for both Edward and Elizabeth Lipscomb.

Frances Barnett the wife of Micajah Barnett was born the 4th Oct. 1776
ELIZABETH WHITE Born June 19th, 1813   (death is not recorded)

Note from Mike:
Javan was the husband of Elizabeth's sister Rachel who married Javan.

Note from Mike:
Elizabeth is not listed on the 1860 or 1870 census with Javan & Rachel,
if my theory is correct, I suspect the 1850 census, should it ever be found,
will show Elizabeth White living with her sister's family, Rachel Barnett.

Elizabeth White

There were three (3) Elizabeth White's at Cedar Springs, all related to each other; Elizabeth White, wife of Robt Sr., Elizabeth Boatman White, wife of Wm White, and mother to the third Elizabeth.

In the Minutes of Cedar Springs Baptist Church:

July 22, 1833 (Page 05)...Received Elizabeth White by Baptism.           dismis: Nov 27, 1858
[Elizabeth - dau of Wm & Elizabeth White]

[Elizabeth - dau of Wm & Elizabeth White]

Notes:  As you can see, Rachel and Elizabeth were received
the same day, this is what convinces me they were sisters, it appears
Elizabeth wasn't married, she departs with Javan & Rachel in 1855.
The 1850 census for Javan hasn't been found yet, I suspect Elizabeth
might be living in the same household, the dismissal date of 1858 might
be when Elizabeth White departed Cedar Springs to marry Edward
Lipscomb, as a Elizabeth Lipscomb is received at Goucher Crk Baptist,
on Nov 20th, 1858, at least it appears to be...

**There is not much information on Elizabeth, she is entered in the Micajah Barnett Bible record with sister Rachel and her husband Javan Barnett, some believe Javan had possession of this Bible, after his fathers death, as most of the entries after that death, are Javan & Rachel's family.

**Elizabeth is identified as a daughter of Wm & Elizabeth, in the Isaac P Murphy letters (1886).

Death of Edward Lipscomb Verified:

Death Notice:
====================================
(Born: 31 Jul 1795 Spartanburg Co SC
Died: 7 Oct 1875 Spartanburg Co SC)

Carolina Spartan - Pacolette - October 11, 1875

Transcribed:
"Mr. Edward Lipscomb, of White Plains, ano-
ther esteemed citizen, died last week at the ad-
vanced age of near ninety years.  He was for
a long series of years a member of the Baptist
Church at Goucher Creek.  His Character as a
citizen and Christian was above reproach."
====================================

Note from Mike:
Unfortunately, it doesn't mention his current wife or
any children, hopefully, his Will or Estate is on file
at the Archives...  to be continued...

Death of Edward printed in
Article from the Spartanburg Herald:
====================================
Spartanburg Herald,

Oct. 7th 1875, "Death of Edward Lipscomb
This gentleman departed this life at his home
on Thicketty on Thursday last. Mr. Lipscomb
was quite advanced in years, being about
eighty at the time of his death. He filled his
measure of life in a quiet and unassuming way
but was a useful and influential citizen. He adds
one more to the list of our many old and valued
citizens who have gone to their long homes. He
leaves several children and many friends to
measure his loss. Spartanburg had no truer citizen."
====================================

Notes from Mike:
Notice - no mention of a wife... But Edward's
'Will' does mention his wife Elizabeth.

One lead is this, the Spartanburg Herald printed the following on Edward,
which mentions that he lived in the Thickety area, well, Goucher Creek
drains into Big Thickety, (1868 Survey map Sptg).

We now know conclusively that Edward had a second marriage,
his Will was found attached to a probate file # 2743 (3 pages).
Elizabeth his wife is mentioned.

large circle of relations and friends to mourn her loss. Mrs Lipscomb had just
entered her sixty-fourth year. Having connected herself with the Baptist
Church in about her eighteenth year, she continued a consistent member of the
church unto the day of her demise. She lived to see her immediate family all
reared and educated, and although the loss of a wife and a mother is ever to
be looked upon as a calamity, yet the goodness of Providence in prolonging her
life has greatly lightened the bereavement to which the loss of one so nearly
allied by all the ties of nature and affection must produce.

advanced age of near ninety year. He was for long years a member of the Baptist
           Church at Goucher Creek.

This gentleman departed this life at his home on Thickety on Thursday last [October 7, 1875].
Mr Lipscomb was quite advanced in years, being about eighty at the time of his death. He filled
his measure of life in a quiet and unassuming way, but was a useful and influential citizen. He
adds one more to the list of our many old and valued citizens who have gone to their long homes.
He leaves several children and many friends and relatives to mourn his loss. Spartanburg had no
truer citizen, nor one whose death will be generally and sincerely regretted throughout the county.

nephew of Elder Joroyal Barnett, one of the pioneer ministers of the Broad

"worthy deacon of Goucher Creek Church" [Edward Lipscomb]...............

He supplied many churches including Cedar Springs, his "mother church",

Philadelphia, Sulphur Springs, Gilead, Limestone, Pacolet, Shelby, and El

Bethel, and a term of only nine months at Bethel, Woodruff............

He had actually died on 20 Sep 1872, in the town of Shelby, Cleveland Co, NC at

01the age of 54...........

1842. Drury Scurggs.......constituted the presbytery.....Barnett, nephew of

Joroyal Barnett was born 20 May 1818 and departed this life 20 Sep 1872, in the

town of Shelby, NC. M C Barnett married Nazareth Lipscomb , daughter of Edward

Lipscomb, deacon of Goucher Creek Church. Barnett supplied at different time

BRIEF BAPTIST BIOGRAPHIES 1707-1982 Vol II

Elder Micajah Cicero Barnett...........................

Barnett, Elder Micajah Cicero, nephew of Elder Joroyal Barnett was born 20 May

1818, near Cedar Spring, Sptbg Co, SC. He was licensed to preach the Gospel by

the Cedar Spring Church on 27 Nov 1841......He intermarried with Miss Nazareth

Lipscomb, daughter of Edward Lipscomb, Esquire, a worthy deacon of Goucher Creek

Church........He died on the 20th (19th the marker says) of Sep 1872, in the

town of Shelby, Cleveland Co, NC in the 55th year of his age.......

The burial place of Elder Barnett, El Bethel Church, Cherokee Co, SC. El

Bethel Baptist Church is located in the southern portion of Cherokee Co, SC,

some 12 miles south of Gaffney, SC and located on HWY 54. The El Bethel

Church was constituted in 1803.

[I think it is confusing: Elder Barnett was buried in the cemetery of the

last church he served, El Bethel, in what is today Cherokee, SC...........

His wife, Nazareth, was buried 27 years later in Bethel Cemetery, Woodruff,

SC. Woodruff was near to where the Barnett family lived including their children.

I assume the children which erected her marker, see above, wanted her buried

near-by. Yes, one was El Bethel and the other Bethel
