Here they were placed in a camp of instruction, at Lightwoodknot Springs, about five miles from Columbia, and allowed to arrange themselves in regiments of ten companies and elect field-officers. The second regiment so formed was numbered as the Thirteenth South Carolina volunteers, and elected the following officers;
Calhoun, P. L., Colonel Farrow, T. Stobo, Major After a period of about three months' instruction at Lightwoodknot Springs, it was ordered to the southern coast of South Carolina, it was ordered to the southern coast of South Carolina, near Pocotaligo, where it was brigaded with the Twelfth and Fourteenth regiments, as before stated. In the autumn of 1861 they were ordered to the coast where they served until April 1862 when they were ordered to Virginia to serve in the Army of Northern Virginia for the remainder of the war. During that time they were in Maxcy Gregg's Brigade until he was killed at Fredericksburg. Then Samuel McGowan was placed in command of the brigade where the name changed to McGowan's Brigade. The 13th Regiment remained a part of the army of northern Virginia until the conclusion of the war. The 13th Regiment was present at the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. Captain John Wilson Carlisle of Company C later recalled General Custer of the Federal Army passing in front of the 13th waving a white flag as it was getting ready to go into engagement. Of the 13th Regiment, 220 men were killed in battle or died of wounds. 262 died of disease and 678 men received wounds in combat. In
