<<<  This picture hangs in the Padgett's creek Baptish church in
Union Co SC, allegedly is Robert White and Wife, now is
it Jr? or Sr?, Robt Jr left UC in 1819 for Spartanburg, and
a member of the Cedar Springs Baptist Church, also, there
were NO Camera's until 1838, and they were the Wet Plate
type invented in France.  So in fact, this photo may be our Robt
White Sr and 2nd wife Elizabeth who was much younger than Sr.
Did a relative give this to the church? remember Robt Sr died 1843,
this face in the Picture is classic White look, matches Elias, and Ben
White and others several generations down Elias's lineage, I am posting
this picture on Jr's page, as the ole-relative-gave-the pict-theory may be?
Note also, that Robt Jr,  maintaining tradition, also married a much younger wives.

May 13, 1875, Page 3:

Our esteemed fellow-citizen, T. Warren White, stopped a few minutes to chat with us, on Monday last. He informed us that he had just received a
letter from his father, who lives near Spartanburg, S. C., and who is now beyond his ninety-first year. The late cyclone in that section of country struck the old gentleman's place and did considerable damage. It blew down
two very large trees upon his house, crushing and destroying it.

His barn was completely demolished, his carriage and buggy were broken
so as to be useless. The old gentleman says he cannot work as well as he
could some thirty years ago, and feels the loss of the property ruined by
the wind. When he was ninety-one years old he laid the worm of a rail fence
some several hundred yards long.

Mr. White's grandfather was also a vigorous veteran. He was a blacksmith, and on his 100th birthday took a pick in his hand, walked a mile to a shop
and worked a piece of steel on its point. He returned home (on foot) with
the pick, and throwing it upon the groundremarked "there, who of you can
do that when you are a century old?" We doubt if there are many as vigorous
old gentlemen.

Note:
This newspaper 'Standard and Express" came into Business Dec 1871, and
was sold, Dec 1875, to become 'Cartersville Express', under owner
C.H.C. Willingham.
There is no copy available at the Cartersville Libraries. The actual Tapes are located at the
  Athens University Archives, Athens GA.

Notes from Mike White:

Of course the article is a gold mine, from a researchers point of view I see the following:

1. It confirms that Robert Jr and Sr are who we think they are...
2. This Warren of Bartow Co GA is definitely part of our family (with other evidence)
3. Confirms their home residence of Spartanburg.
4. It offers additional support that Robert White Sr was a VETERAN  'of the Revolutionary War'.
5. Confirms his trade as a Blacksmith.
6. Confirms he was still physically and mentally together at 100 years old.
7. It hints that Robert White Sr. may have been living in Spartanburg at least at 100 (1843), but was said to
have died on a journey to Union Co SC, where his two daughters, Elizabeth and Susan still lived,
and son Elias, who left for Texas in 1845.  Not to mention the many Grand and Great Grand children.
I suspect but cannot prove that Robert Sr was living with Robert Jr., for a time, we have never found them
on the 1840 census, which would have answered that question...  Sr died 1843.

John Willis White's father was Robert White Jr, who married 1st Mary Polly Cooper brother of James William Cooper above.

Robert White Sr., DNA pool based on Mike White Y-DNA test, indicates we are somehow connected to Hanover Co VA White's

Tillah White King - was the daughter of a John White of Louisa/Hanover Co Va

Mike's DNA test doesn't tell us exactly which White family of the Hanover Co VA
White's we are directly related to, that may be determined in the furture if more
White's are tested, but this does expanded our Family migration further north
from the Roanoke River VA, where Robert White Sr was born in 1743.

1. My name is Mike White I do not descend from Robert White Jr. Lineage, but from his Brother Elias.

2. I have taken all available Genetic DNA Test at FamilyTreeDNA.com

3. My DNA results have shown that our White DNA has connections to White families and other surnames
that lived in Hanover Co VA. (New Kent, Louisa Co VA)

4. It is not a perfect match, but indicates some DNA relationship to some White's in the Hanover Co area.

ESTATE OF ROBERT WHITE JR

I believe there is an Estate record for our Robert Jr., however, there is a court appointed Administrator, and names no children, wife or family, says this ROBERT WHITE died in 1880, there is no Distribution or Administration Bonds that I have found yet or what they sold.

The estate was filed April 3rd 1882
Recorded in book: F Page 125, May 7th 1883.
Clerk of Court of Common
of Robert White Decd.
(Spartanburg County SC)

NOTE:
Susan Norman White, Robt's., 2nd wife, died 3 Oct 1882, Robert died 17 Feb. 1880.  It appears the Court finally appointed an administrator.  To my knowledge, Robert Jr., out-lived most of his children and siblings, most had moved away from SC, two were killed in the civil war, this may explain why no family is mentioned.  Susan was in her advanced years, from the 1870 census, indicated that their life long friends were deceased.   I cannot find Susan White in the 1880 census, I am sure she must be living with family, or in the care of someone, being a Norman, It is possible she returned to Union Co SC?,   This Estate record is on file at the South Carolina Archives in Columbia.

Marriages & Deaths, Baptist Newspapers, SC, 1866-1887
About the first of March, Miss Peggy Underwood, as she was familiarly called by her friends and associates, was seized with a violent attack of pneumonia which terminated her mortal existence.... She had been a member of the Baptist church at Cedar Springs, Spartanburg county for at least thirty years. She was a daughter of William Underwood Sr., who served as a deacon in that church to the day of his death, being, I suppose, nearly eighty years of age. William Underwood and his associate in the deaconship, William Lancaster "seemed to be pillows in the church," more than half a century ago . Lancaster died in 1814 and after that time underwood was associated in his office with some younger men: David Golightly, Thomas Cooper, and Robert White.... Friend. Goudeysville, Union Co., March 31, 1870.

NOTE:  Peggy was received at Cedar Springs Baptist
Church in Spartanburg, April 21 1831 by
             Letter and Baptism.

Robert's Obituary reads as follows:

"ROBERT WHITE, who died at his residence near Cedar Springs,
in Spartanburg County, on the 17th day of February last, deserves
a worthier tribute to his memory, than the writer of this short sketch
is capable of giving.

"He was born in Union County, then District, [Error NC], then District, on the ---day of ----, 1784. [16 Mar], and was in his ninety-sixth year when he died.  When a youth he united with the Padgett Creek church in his native District. In 1815 [1818] he moved to Spartanburg district and settled near Cedar Springs where he continued to reside until the day of his death.  On moving to his new home he at once changed his membership to the church at that place.  In 1821 he was elected a deacon of Cedar Springs church, which office he retained, and by his Christian conduct adorned the balance of his life - thus continuing for fifty-nine years a deacon of the church where he was ordained.

"His most distinguishing characteristics were his earnest Christian piety and his devotion to duty.  During his long life his seat was never once vacant when service was held in his church, unless physically disabled, or kept away by some family affliction which rarely happened, in cold, heat, in rain or sunshine, his pastor could always rely upon the encouragement of his presence.  He loved his church and all its ordinances.

"The Sabbath-school, too, was his delight.  His modesty and distrust of his own merit were so great that he could never be prevailed upon to take a class, yet he was punctual and constant attendant.

"Unwilling to assume the responsibility of a teacher he was always anxious to be a learner.  And as in church so in Sunday-school, if his seat was vacant, it was a subject of remark and it was at once known that he was either sick or that something unusual had transpired in his family.  The end of such a man could be nothing less than perfect peace, and though dead he yet speaketh in the impress  he has left upon others.

"Happy the man who like ROBERT WHITE can, when he comes to die, look back upon a life where youth, manhood, and old age had been spent in doing all the good he could in the sphere in which he lived and labored.

"The rich fragrance which lingers around a life thus spent will long rise, like precious incense, to shed its blessings upon all around."

A Friend

Susan White Rhodes, married to Absolom Rhodes,

daughter of Robt. White Sr., wife to Lewis Rhodes.

CAROLINA SPARTAN

UNCLE "BILLY VISITS UNCLE ABSEY"

(Wednesday Jan. 14, 1891, P.1, Col. 8, No. 5.)

The Atlanta Constitution gives an interesting account of a visit made by Uncle Billy Bowers to Uncle "Absey" Rhodes, at Hephzibah, Georgia. As Mr. Rhodes and his wife have relatives in this and Union Counties we give an account of the South Carolinian as told by the Constitution:

Uncle Billy Bowers has been on a visit to Absalom White Rhodes, who was born in what is now Union County South Carolina, March 27, 1811. Mr. Rhodes moved to Richmond County in 1815 and then to Burke County in 1819, and back to Richmond in 1823, being twelve years old at that time. From that date till now he has lived in the same house -- sixty-eight years -- in this thriving little village, four-teen miles west of Augusta.

He was married to Miss Susan Cooper White, of Spartanburg, S. C., on the 22d day of September 1830. He engaged in the service of the United States, as mail carrier. July 1, 1852, and from that time till the present, with the exception of a few years has been in the service of Uncle Sam, filling positions as mail contractor, and postmaster, etc. During all that time -- a period of about forty years -- he has never failed to be on time, never has failed to make connection with other mail routes, has never delayed the forwarding of a up mail matter, whether in or outside of the mail pouch. He has long been a faithful and consistent member of the Missionary Church. He is very stout for one of his years being about four score. He served as census enumerator in 1880 and again as such in the year 1891. His post office has been a distributing point for mail matter since 1852, and until 1878 without government emoluments. During 1878 his place was designated a post office by the post office department. The old man is familiarly called "Uncle Absey," and his home is always open to friends.

Mrs. Susan C. Rhodes, wife of Uncle Absey, was born in Union County, South Carolina, Jun 30, 1812, moved to Spartanburg County, in 1819, was baptized October 24, 1830. She is a faithful and worthy member of the church, taking a deep interest in advancing the cause of the Redeemer's Kingdom. She is the mother of five sons and four daughters. Only two of the sons are living. The daughters are all living. The eldest and youngest son and daughter, are living with their parents, Mrs. Rhodes is an ornament to the cause she espouses. She is known to all her acquaintances as "Aunt Susan." The Rhodes family in Hephzibah consists of Uncle Absey, Aunt Susan. The eldest son, R. L. Rhodes, his wife and son Walter, and the old man's youngest daughter, Miss Mollie, making six in all.

Uncle Billy Bowers says the Rhodes house and family make him think of his grandfather Bower's house and family. While not noted for putting on extras and high-flying airs, yet is noted for neatness, good order, simplicity, convenience and everything and everything in its place. Uncle Billy will add that the man who wins the heart's affection of the remaining single daughter will secure to himself life's most desirable fortune. While Uncle Billy does not profess to be a Solomon, yet he flatters himself that he has some knowledge of the characteristics necessary to constitute the general makeup of a woman who will make a good wife.

NOTE:  At this time it is not unknown, who Uncle Billy Bowers, belongs to...

Our gratitude to James Reid
for the discovery of this article,
which undoubtedly contains very
valuable information on the family
of Absalom & Susan White Rhodes.
A family treasure, information that,
answers & confirms many  family
doubts and questions, on both the
White's & Rhodes Families, gives
us a glimpse into the lives of our
ancestors, & their contributions.

Mary's Uncle REV. THOMAS S. GREER - his story

Thomas S. Greer, born in North Carolina in 1768, was the oldest son, and one of 17 children born to Thomas Greer, Sr., and his wife Sarah Smith Greer, who moved from North Carolina to Union District, South Carolina, before the year 1775. It is shown in Drayton's Memoirs of the American Revolution, Volume 1, page 403'; Thomas Greer Sr., was one of the six members of the Council of Safety who signed the treaty at the Camp, near Ninety-Six, on the 16th day of September 1775, verifying that he was a resident of South Carolina at that time.

Thomas S. Greer married Sarah Elizabeth Murphy, a daughter of Sion Murphy, and to this union ten children were born. The family home was located on the north side of Tyger River, in the vicinity of Old Fairforest Brick Meeting House. However, Thomas S. Greer was never affiliated with the Fairforest Church, even though it was near to his home, but joined the Padgett's Creek Church (then called Tyger River Church by experience, on May 31, 1788. After being received into the fellowship of the church, he was given committee assignments on various occasions, and on March 12, 1796, in a Church Meeting; --"Also gave Thos. Greer leave to appoint Meeting where he is invited to go with Caution any where.' He was later licensed to preach the Gospel, on the 10th day of November 1798. And a year later, on November the 9th, in a meeting at Padgett's Creek Church, Spencer Bobo and Thomas Greer were ordained and set to the Ministry, by Elders Joshua Palmer and Frederick Crowder, as the ordaining presbytery ministers. In July 1800, only eight months later, Thomas Greer Sr., was received by letter as a member at Padgett's Creek Church, and shortly after this there were eight members of the Greer families who joined this Church by experience and baptism.

After his ordination to the ministry, Thomas Greer soon became one of the leaders in Baptist church work in the upper part of the State. In her book, 'South Carolina Baptist--1670-1805', Leah Townsend states on page 300, that Rev. Thomas Greer was one of the preachers who held successful gatherings which large crowds attended during the 1802-1803 revival period. During that period, Padgett's Creek Church added 420 members by baptism, under the leadership of pastor Thomas Greer.

In 'Benedict's History of the Baptist Denomination in America, volume II, page 530, the Table of Association and Churches show: The Bethel Association met at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, York District, on October 1, 1808, at which time Thomas Greer was Moderator and preached the Association sermon, and he, along with Thomas Ray and Hosea Holcombe are named Ministers at Padgett's Creek. Thomas Greer was Moderator of the Bethel Association for several years. He is named at the pastor having charge of the ministerial work at Padgett's Creek Church, until September 1835, when the church resolved to go into the election of a pastor and Elder Thomas Ray was named for the work. Rev. Thomas Greer had the assistance of Thomas Ray and Elijah Ray, in his work at Padgett's Creek for a few years before he was retired as pastor.

     M. C. Barnett, in his History of the Broad River Association, 1871', says: "Thomas Greer was a very able and efficient minister. he possessed, however, a great deal of singularity. His propensity to tell anecdotes in the pulpit was thought to be excessive, and I suppose no man could tell an anecdote with more zest than he. On one of his visits to his sister (Susan) Simmons, he went into the kitchen to have a religious conversation with Beck, a very zealous ole black women. After being out for some time, he came back and said, "Well, sister, Beck has got a frolic in her soul.' The truth was he had talked with Beck until she had got to shouting, and then he returned and reported that she'd had a frolic in her soul.'

"He was once riding around a field where there was a man plowing, and without speaking to the man in any other way, he said in a loud and solemn tone, 'Break up the fallow ground of thine heart.' This was drawing the bow at a venture; but the arrow penetrated between the joints of the harness, and led to the man's conversion."

Thomas Greer retired from the active ministry about 1835; however, he continued to take part in the activities of Padgett's Creek, his home church, of which he was a member until he departed this life on August 23, 1837. He was buried by the side of his wife Sarah, in Old Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery, near Dining Creek, in Union County South Carolina.

NOTE from Mike White:

The Lower Fairforest Baptist Church was a Branch of the Pagdett's Creek for many years until it became
an approved stand-alone church, from 1762 it was a "" Meeting House  "", many of the folks who show
on the Padgett's rolls early, never show being Dismissed from the Padgett's and Received at the Lower
Fairforest, for this reason, they just start showing on the LFF records... without ever being Received...
So, in the early records before LFF, some folks claimed to be members of the Padgett's, were actually
attending it via the ole-meeting-house (LFF).  There were other churches that served as a branch of
the Padgett's...

Warning: This may not be our Robert White Jr

This needs more investigation

Look at the letter above from son Thomas Warren White,
he says "...Quote:
'My Grandfather WAS ALSO a Vigorous Veteran'..."
I suspect he was saying his father Robt Jr, was once a veteran. This could
be the War of 1812, he was referring to? as this was his Generations War.
In 1812, Robt Jr was still living in Union Co SC, with his new wife Mary...
First child Susan born Jun 1812, 2nd child, Martha born May 1814, and
3rd Mildred born Sep 1815, considering that soldiers were given Furloughs
(vacations) to go home and tend to crops & business, and of course to
conceive children.  Hopefully the archives have records on this Robt.

In 1812, Robert Jr was living in the Cross Keys area
of Union Co, or South/West UC, where some of these
soldiers in Mean's unit were from. Robert White Jr may have
been same unit brother BF White. He Served as a Fife from 12yr
to 15yrs old, also in this unit were many relatives of the White's.

NARA National Archives Records indicate this Robert White
joined in Chester Co SC, that is, just EAST of Union Co SC
where Robert Jr was living in 1812, left in 1819. As in his brothers,
BF White's, unit soldiers joined from other counties in Union Co, in
fact soldiers from Union joined in Laurens Co SC. This Robert enlisted
about November 1st, 1814, BF White joined in 1812, so it is possible
the recruitment was in Chester Co SC, at the time Robert joined in 1814,
the Payroll person was J Underwood, the Underwood family of Spartanburg,
were life long friends of Robert White Jr's family, not sure if there was a
connection in Chester Co or not, is possible that this is NOT our Robt Jr.
