we think of the consequences that brought us here today - How precious and delicate life can be - Hold your ancestors in memory for all eternity***

Update from Mike:
We now know Ben & Polly's land was by the Sulphur River,
where brother, John G and Wm White had land, also, his sister,
Mary White Tapp, and 1st cousin, Samuel Bobo.  I suspect,
they were in this area, that could be now part of Lake Wright Patman.
Tapp/Watson cemetery was relocated from there to CRC in 1956.

Letter from Glenn Thrapp of Redwater TX
to Mrs. Kay White - Subject Ben White

Mike,

This is from a copy of a letter I sent Kay several years before she published
the White Family book. My copy is not dated.

About Benjamin's land;

1. 1852 to 1858 payed taxes on 320 acres that later became known as the
Nathan Proctor Headright. [See Map Below]

2. 1859 to 1864 John G. White payed tax on Ben's estate, same acres.
[Note: This John G White being Ben's brother]

3.1865-1868 John's widow Mary payed tax on Ben's estate, same acres.
[Note: John G White's wife was Mary Whitus]

4. 1869-1870 W.P. White payed tax on this land.
[Notes: This is William Pinkney White son of Ben & Polly]

Notes from Glenn;

Ben White - Most of the 320 acres is in 2 creek bottoms. The hightest land in this
Headright shows signs of a old home site. The area is covered in white
narciss flowers, the same as found at the Tapp home site & Elias's home site.

John G. White - There are two possibles for his home sites. The site on the
west side is my guess. There is a house there now & I can't search the area
with a metal detector. Has the same white flowers.

Tapp home site - The graves of the Tapp & Ben & Polly White were located west
of this place. Unable to find. Believe John & Mary White could be buried
there yet. Found home made bricks & several metal objects indicating a home
for many many years. Dorothy Pullen gave me directions to this site. She
passed away a couple years ago.

Glenn

Mike's Notes:
Kay's book was published in 1989, I would guess the letter was
written in late 1970's or very early in 1980's.
Mr. Glenn Thrapp of Redwater Texas was very instrumental in the
success of the White story, in Bowie County Tx., and provided
much of his research and time to the success of our family book.
Even today, Glenn is still helping us expand on our family History.
A true Neighbor, Resident and Local historian, his accomplishments
and discoveries will never go unrecognized. Many of our descendants
have been taken on tours of the old Creed Cemetery, and former lands
of Elias White and his childrens, compliments of Glenn, myself included.
Without his guidance, some of us, would still be wondering the woods,
trying to find our ancestors resting place. Not enough can be said...

 UP^

Ben's land is below brother John G White's
his land became the Nathan Proctor HRS

Ben claimed this land via an old homestead law called Pre-emption, at the time, it allowed
a settler to claim 320 acres of land, but had tolive on it and improve upon it, this law changed.

Ben paid tax on this land from 1852 to 1858, was continued by his brother John after 1858...
John G White and sister Mary White Tapp Smith continued paying the land tax after Ben & Polly's death,
that responsibility fell upon Marion & Thomas White after they came of age to be responible, for the taxes.

 UP^

Ben claimed his 320 acres of land via a old homestead Texas law called Pre-emption.
Even though land records show Benj White HRS, this land later became known as the
Nathan Procter HRS (Headright Survey), he had a Bowie grant of 640 acres, but died.

Pre-emption Grants, Republic and State of Texas

From 1845 to 1854, individuals could claim 320 acres of land from the unappropriated public domain. The amount was reduced to 160 acres in 1854 and the grant program was cancelled in 1856. Preemption grants of 160 acres were reinstituted in 1866 and continued until 1898. To qualify for a preemption grant settlers were required to live on the land for three years and make improvements.

Grave Stones of Ben & Polly

Benjamin White died 1858 Aged 55
Note: 55 yrs is incorrect - he was 38 yrs old

Polly (Nix) White died 1855  Aged 48 Years old
Note:  48 yrs old is incorrect, she was 37 yrs old.

Note:  Some of the eight Grave Stones were probably created in 1956, when the Tapp Cemetery, was relocated into the Center Ridge Cemetery, I suspect a descendant was using his best memory when he had the Dates applied, as they are incorrect.  The former location, I am told, by Glenn Thrapp of Redwater Texas, and a local historian, belonged to the Tapp's, which Elias's daughter Mary White Tapp, was a part of, via her married to Charles Y Tapp.

mike3113@white-family.com

Glenn Thrapp writes about the Tapp Cemetery

On the Tapps buried in Center Ridge. Dick & Minnie were Black. They are found on the 1870 Census of Cass Co.,Tx. figure they were slaves that came with Charles Y. Tapp.

Never found proof as to William Tapp, believe that he was a brother to Charles. That line died with Jenny & I have never researched it very hard. I thought that were probably more graves in the Tapp Cemetery  than they moved, ones without stones. [Wm is the brother of Charles per Wm's Will]

Tried to find the original site once with no luck. Wanted to count the depressions, was looking for John G. White, who lived close by.

The Tapps in the Center Ridge Cemetery were moved to their present location when they built Lake Wright Patman in the 1956.  [It is not known for sure if the Tapp land is now in the lake?]

A William S. Tapp , 1846, paid tax in Bowie Co.

Charles Tapp, page 50, 1850 Bowie Co. Census, but no William. William might have been in Cass Co. which was just across the river from Charles. [Wm buried at Tapp/Watson cemetery in CRC]

Found some old notes on Center Ridge:

Tapp, Mima       Born in Person Co.,NC.  (black)
[former slave of Wm Tapp, Will'd to Charles]
Tapp, Dick         Born in Ky.                    (black)
[former slave of Wm Tapp, Will'd to Charles]
Tapp, Eliza         Born in Person Co.,NC   (wife of Wm Tapp)
Tapp, Wm          Born in AL.                    (brother of Charles Y Tapp)

Here is another tidbit:

Bowie Co.,Tx Book 18, Page 65, 1 Jun 1931, Guardianship of Henry & Lucde Tapp minors, Guardian Mattie B. Jones , land in Clarksville, Red River Co., Tx.

Not sure about the Smith's in Tapp Cemetery, part of Center Ridge, but believe he was the second husband of Susan White.
[he was the 2nd hub of Mary White Tapp]

NOTE: The TAPP Cemetery was relocated from 1856
Lands once owned by the Tapp's to Center Ridge Cemetery in Maud TX [CRC].

**[Green inserts are by Mike White from what we learned later...]

Where did the WATSON name on the
Tapp/Watson Cemetery come from?

What brought this up?
David Arthur White married Myrtle Watson, after 1930,
I traced her from her parents back to Rhoda Watson.  &
then put the Tapp/Watson cemetery into the mix...
David White is the great grandson of Elias & Anne White.
Grandson of William M White, son of John Lee White.

Rhoda (Rhodia) [Barfield] Watson
was the next door neighbor of  the Tapps in 1850, and very
close to Elias White and his son Benjamin & Polly White, Ben
and Polly and some Tapp's, were relocated from the old Tapp/
Watson cemetery into the Center Ridge Cemetery.  When the
old Tapp/Watson flooded and became part of Wright Patman Lake.

This Watson family arrived in Texas in 1839, Rhoda was the wife
of James Watson, who died in 1842. Rhoda was
born in SC, and 2 children in MS & one in Texas in 1839. Their
Son Cary Watson married Emily Elizabeth Watson Aug 9, 1847,
in Bowie County Texas. He was born 1820 Marion Co SC. Cary
named a son James, after his father, and Oran, after his uncle Oren.

James Watson born: 1782, married Rhoda Barfield abt. 1817, possibly
in Marion Co SC. James father was a Thomas Watson, mother unknown,
James Watson died Jul 1842, Bowie Co TX.

Rhoda was the daugher of Barrett Barfield and Nancy ???, Rhoda was
born about 1793, Liberty District, Marion Co SC.

Rhoda is on the 1850, 1860 census of Bowie County, her son John
Watson on the 1870, 1880 census, his daughter Mertle on the 1910.

1842 James Watson, husband of Rhoda died July 1842.
1850 Census Rhoda on Farm & next door to Charles & Mary Tapp
1860 Census Rhoda on Farm & next door to Mark Epperson.
Mark's property was adjacent to Rhoda's. Rhoda on the census
has real estate of 3360 valued at 7830, 63yrs born SC.

A Watson marrying a Watson
Family Tree: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/i/c/Randal-Richardson-/GENE12-0010.html

27. EMILY ELIZABETH8 WATSON (COLEMAN7, LUCINDA "LUCY"6 COLEMAN, JAMES5, ANNE MOURNING4 CHRISTIAN, REBECCA3 NEW, EDMUND2, RICHARD1) was born November 09, 1825 in Warren County, Kentucky, and died December 26, 1908 in Ranger, Eastland County, Texas. She married CARY WATSON August 09, 1847 in Bowie County, Texas, son of JAMES WATSON and RHODA BARFIELD. He was born October 30, 1820 in Marion County, South Carolina, and died December 13, 1904 in Grayson or Eastland County, Texas.

This confirms that the Rhoda Watson on the 1850, and 1860 census
was the wife of the DECEASED, James Watson, the Tapp neighbor.
Appears James Watson Jul 1842 Bowie Co TX.
