NOTES: 

The discovery of this obituary by James Reid, provides us with several answers;  Elizabeth died July 5, 1851, not 1860, as once thought.  Elizabeth was living with son, Samuel & Daughter, Sarah, in the 1850 census, in Spartanburg, she was 70 years old, at that time.  This Obituary confirms that this is our Elizabeth White, that she was married to William White, of Union District.  It confirms that Elizabeth & her children moved to Spartanburg SC, after William's death.  That she carried foward their devotion to their Christ.  We learn that she died from 'consumption'.  

At this time we do not know where Elizabeth & Wm are buried.

1830 - Lived in Union Co. 
1840 - Lived next door to BF White, Sptg Co SC.
1850 - Lived with Son Samuel & Dau. Sarah. in Sptg.
1851 - Died in Spartanburg Co SC. Buried unkn.

1830 - approximate year they moved to Spartanburg.

Elizabeth was a member of the Lower Fairforest
Baptist Church in Union Co SC, up until 1830.

The Jason Wiley Letter (1870's)

This Letter is from Jason Wiley Murphy to his Sister Edy
it describes the children of Wm & Elizabeth White, using 
nicks names.   The bottom portion of the letter is the sect-
ion relevant to William & Elizabeth's Family. Jason is a
first cousin of Wm's children, Wm being uncle to Jason.

The other Letter detailing Wm's family was written by 
Jason's brother Isaac P. Murphy in 1886.

Notes:  (from the bottom section of this letter)
1. Ginna Coggins is Jane White (d. 1884)
2. Sally & Susan - Oldest & Youngest children of Wm & Elizabeth.
                    Sarah never married, lived with sister Susan's family
                    until her death in 1882, they lived in Spartanburg, and
                    had from 1850 to 1880, I guess this is the "OLD PLACE".
3. Backael? - is Rachel White - Wonder what the Village is? They lived
                    in Spartanburg, Cedar Springs? Columbia Richland Co?
                    as Javan and Rachel were there in 1870, 1880... 
                    but Javan worked for the Railroad and may have moved
                    back and forth, by 1880 was a building inspector. 
4. Betsy is Elizabeth who marries a Lipskum (Edward Lipscomb).
5. Jocker Creek - was Goucher Creek, where many Lipscombs lived.
6. Wm in GA - Haven't located in GA yet... 
7. Lucy dedd - 'dead' she died 29 May 1859 in Sptg Co SC.
8. Samuel in Alabama - Actually was in Hart Co GA & is buried there...
9. Note that JAMES WHITE is not mentioned, but is mentioned in 
    Jason's brothers letter, Isaac Murphy.  James is not found in Union
    Co. after the 1850 census.  He was listed as a Carpenter. James is on 
    a couple of deeds, one with father and one with Uncle Elias White.
    James may have died between 1860/70, as Nancy [Browning] his wife
    is living with daughter, Susan Byers, on the 1870 Census, Unionville.

Summary:  
All of Wm's children are talked about except James. This letter is 
truely a gift from God, along with Isaac's letter, gives us a unique 
glimpse into the Family of Wm & Elizaebth White.  

Another Summary:
New addition bellow, the Elizabeth (mom), and daughters are remembered
in an Article written in 1895 by; Miss. A. Anna Allen, "Sketch of some
Prominent Sisters of Cedar Spring Church". (See bottom of this page)

                                         offered appropriate remarks and closing prayer. Rev W. P. Smith stated
                                         that just about thirty-two years agao, Rev M. C. Barnett, a brother of
                                         Bro Javan Barnett, had baptized him (Smith).

Comments on the Minutes above:

Received Dates at Cedar Springs Baptist - You might notice the families arrival is within a few short years, and that depending on whether the children were of age to be recieved, normally, that was in the early 20's, though I have seen younger, in a case where a lady married an older man.    The arrival time coincides with their departure dates from the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church in Union Co SC, if you consider settling time. 

ABOUT WILLIAM & ELIZABETH'S CHILDREN: 
The children of the above, were all mentioned, in a first cousins letter, grandson  to Robert White Sr., Isaac Pearson Murphy, he was about 86 yrs old when the letter was written (Feb 25, 1886) and died several months after... Isaac, no doubt attended church with Wm's children at the Padgett's Crk Baptist and again at the Lower Fairforest, this being prior to 1830.  He could only remember that Susan White may be living in the Cedar Springs area, which was correct.  Susan White, dau. of Wm & Elizabeth, appears to have been the only child still living in Spartanburg at the time of Isaac Murphy's death. The others were deceased or had moved to other counties, some unknown.  HOWEVER, if you are talking about descendant lines, many remained in Spartanburg into the 1900's, under different surnames, such as, Barnett, Coggins, Lee and others, that were direct descendants of Wm White's children. 

ELIZABETH WHITE - There were 3 Elizabeth White's at Cedar Springs, Elizabeth White, wife of Robt Sr., Elizabeth Boatman White, wife of Wm White, and daughter to the Elizabeth I believe to be their daughter.  If this Rachel is indeed a daughter of Wm & Eliza, then I will say with confidence, that this Elizabeth, who was dismissed with Javan and Rachel in 1855, was the sister of Rachel.

SAMUEL WHITE - Mother, Elizabeth & dau. Sarah lived with Sam in 1850 census, mother died in 1851, and Samuel is dismissed shortly after, it is true that, when the Parents died, many times the children usually scattered, most times for economical reasons, and just pure adventure. Sam left Spartanburg after his mothers death, with Nancy his wife, they moved to Hart Co GA, where they lived the rest of there lives.   Sarah is then found living with her younger sister Susan & husband W F Coggins, until her death, in 1882, she is in the 1860, 70 & 80 census, living with WF & Susan Coggins.

SARAH - she never married, I contribute this to having had to raise you Siblings after the death of her father, many times this same case can be found in other families of the times.  As mentioned above, Sarah lived with her mother, then Samuel, and then Susan, her sister, until her death in 1882. 

JAVAN & RACHEL WHITE BARNETT - I have a theory on why Javan & Rachel seem to arrive and depart this church frequently, Javan, at least when he lived in Columbia, was a Conductor for a Railroad (name still unknown), and was on the Road to and from different area's of South Carolina, secondly, his oldest daughter, Louisa was buried at Cedar Springs Cemetery, I believe this explains his later visits to the Cedar Springs Baptist, not to mention family and friends, he was ordained a deacon at this church. They are found in the 1860 census still living in Spartanburg, but were dismissed, 1855, for the last time, I suspect they attended another church in the area, where other Barnett's had gone to... They are again found in 1870, now living in Columbia Richland Co SC.  

JOHNSON & JANE WHITE COGGIN - Both remained members, of Cedar Springs Baptist, until their deaths, they lost three sons in the civil war. It saddens me that neither of their deaths are mentioned in the minutes, Johnson was an active member of the church.  They were married in Union Co SC, were both members of the Lower Fairforest Baptist Church, before Cedar Springs.  There children and descendants remained members well into the 1900's.  

JOHN S & LUCY WHITE BARNETT - More investigation into this couple is needed, there were several John's and it is unclear which belongs to Lucy.  There were good John's and not so good John's in attendance, that is why it will take a closer look.

This deed is significant in a couple of ways;

1. Shows a connection between Wm White and his son-in-law
    Johnson Coggin, who married Wm's daughter Jane.

2.  It is one of a couple of documents showing Wm White's oldest 
     son James White. 

3.  Is one of the last documents before the death of Wm White
    Dec of 1829. 

4.  Elizabeth Boatman White, wife of Wm White, brother Jesse
     Boatman is listed on this deed. 

5.  John Gibbs, who's sister Anna Gibbs, married Wm's brother
     Elias White, is also on this deed. 

6.  All of the above in addition to what a deed normally provides,
     a real bonus.

This deed is significant in that, Wm & Betsey White are shown together,
Fredrick Jackson is also a relative, and his property is ajoining 
William White's on the West side.  Caleb Greer is also a relative
of the White's, at several overlapping levels, Robt White Jr., 
1st wife Mary was related to the Greer's, Caleb was a Uncle to her.
Ralph Jackson, who is mentioned is also a relative.  Very important 
to see these family connections.  And lastly, we see the Rhodes Lands,
above, Robt Sr's children; Mary & Tillman married Rhodes, also the
daughter of Robt White Jr, Susan.

married Nancy Browning daughter of Thomson Browning, the Howards,
are related via the marriage of Elias White son of Robt Sr to Anne Gibbs and
also via the Nix's to Howard, via Ben White (son of Elias) marriage to Polly Nix,
and Hiram Gibbs to Anne Gibbs, and Woodson via James White to Nancy Browning & of course Betty (Elizabeth Howard) Crawford via Anne Gibbs line...

BOATMAN FAMLY REMEMBERED: Union Co SC:
Vera Smith Spears book 'The Fair Forest Story', states 'The Boatman family is remembered in Union County SC by the Boatman Spring near Tyger River, close to hwy 49. For years it was popular place for camping, family reunions and picnics for people in the surrounding area.

The Waterman Boatman Family page 34 article 85:

Waterman Boatman was first of his family to settle in Union Co SC. The wills of his forbearers are found in the records of Lancaster Co VA.

The Surnames began to be used in Europe in the twelfth century, a man who owned a boat or one Who was employed to pilot small boats through canals and marshlands was know as a boatman. 

The emigrant, Henry Boatman believed to be the son of Henry Boatman, an inn keeper of Norwich, England, was living in 1675 in Lancaster Co VA, where he was a tailor. He married Elizabeth and his will, dated Oct 25, 1721 and filed April 11, 1722, lists children: Richard, Henry, John, and Robert Boatman and Ann Boatman Pasquot.

Robert Boatman was born to Henry Boatman, Roberts will was filed in 1749 in Lancaster Co VA. It list Waterman as one of the children. 

Waterman son of Robert, born lived in Lancaster Co VA in 1749. By 1769, 1770, 1771, he was on the tax list in Bute County, NC. Here he married Dinah Cooper, daughter of Benjamin Cooper. By 1790 the Coopers and Boatmans were neighbors in Union Co SC. Waterman Boatman, a shoemaker by trade, purchased in 1796 250 acres on Tyger River in UC SC, including a spring known today as Boatman's Spring. For many years this was a picnic area for the young.

The Boatman, Lawson and Sparks families were close neighbors on Tyger River in western UC. At Boatman's Spring the Boatman home was at the top of a high hill on one side of the stream and the Lawson home at the top of a hill on the other side. No doubt the Spring supplied water for both families. -- Leon Lawson Mabry.

The Oath 

     I will bare faithful and true allegiance to the State of North Carolina and will truly endeavor to support maintain and defend the Independent Goverm't thereof against George the third King of Great Britain and his successors and the attempts of any other persons, prince, power, State, or potentate who by secret are treason conspire copies or by open force shall attempt to subject the same and I will in every respect conduct myself as a peaceful orderly subject and that I will disclose and make known to the Governor (or) some member of the Council of State or some Justice of the Superior Courts or of the peace all treason conspiracies and attempts committed or intended against the State which shall come to my knowledge so help you God.  

     The Oath had to be administered by justices of their districts to qualify the men to vote for members in the election.

He could have lived in Pittsylvania Co VA, prior to moving to Union Co SC, as many of the people who settled the Tyger River in Union Co SC were from that county. He was on the 1790 census of Unoin Co SC. He purchased 250 acres on the Tyger River Union Co SC in 1796. He died before 1800, last will and testament was dated 26 Aug 1800".

In a compilation by Jerry Cross, Researcher, Historic Sites Section, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, 27 Nov 1974 that is available at the Alamance Battleground site.  He compiled it from petitions to the Assembly and to the governor by North Carolina residents who were sympathetic to the Regulators.  How many of this list actually actively participated in resistance movements or demonstrations is unclear.  Some were present at Alamance and died there:

(Prelude to the Revolutionary War)

During the years leading up to the American Revolution many North Carolina people became strongly discontented with the way the provincial government was handling the colony's affairs. However, their quarrel was not with the form of government or the colony's laws but with abuses by government officials.

Grievances affecting the daily lives of the colonists included excessive taxes, dishonest sheriffs, and illegal fees. Scarcity of money contributed to the state of unrest. Those living in the western part of the province were isolated and unsympathetic with the easterners and it was in those frontier counties that the War of the Regulation began.

Minor clashes occurred until the spring of 1768, when an association of "Regulators" was formed. Wealthier colonists considered them to be a mob. The Regulators never had an outstanding leader, though several men were prominent in the movement; including James Hunter, Rednap Howell, William Butler, and Herman Husband. Husband, a Quaker and follower of Benjamin Franklin, circulated political pamphlets advocating peaceful reform.

Discouraged over failing to secure justice through peaceful negotiations, the reformers took a more radical stand. Violence, lawlessness, and terrorism reigned. When the government retaliated against them, the Regulators defiantly refused to pay fees, terrorized those who administered the law, and disrupted court proceedings.

It fell to royal governor William Tryon to bring the backcountry revolt to a speedy conclusion. In March 1771, the governor's council advised Tryon to call out the militia and march against the rebel farmers.

Volunteers for the militia were mustered. When the expedition finally got under way, Gen. Hugh Waddell was ordered to approach Hillsborough by way of Salisbury, with Cape Fear and western militia at his command. Tryon and his army proceeded more directly toward Hillsborough. Waddell, with only 284 men, was challenged on his way by a large groups of Regulators. Since he was outnumbered, the general decided to turn back. On May 11, Governor Tryon and his forces left Hillsborough intending to rescue Waddell. After resting on the banks of Alamance Creek in the heart of Regulator country, Tryon gathered his army of approximately a thousand men. Five miles away, 2,000 Regulators had assembled.

     First of all, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Diana during her widowhood the whole benefit of my plantation whereon I now live, with all my personal property, provided nevertheless my son Robert shall have the free use and benefit of that part of the Plantation which he now enjoys for his proper use and behoof during  my wife's widowhood.  And also it is my desire and meaning that my son John shall have And the privilege of living on and cultivating part of said Plantation during my wife's widowhood.  And also it is my will and desire that my daughter Joanna shall have the privilege of enjoying that part of the Plantation whereon she now lives provided nevertheless if my said daughter shall remove off said land, all rights, title, or interest to her, her heirs, or assigns, shall cease from the day of her removal.   At the death or marriage of my wife, I give and bequeath unto my two sons, Robert and John, the whole of the tract of land whereon I now live; (he had already sold part of his land to his son Jesse before 1800) to be equally divided between then the said Robert and John.  It is my will and desire that at the death of my wife all Residue of my estate, Real or Personal, except such as before mentioned, shall be equally divided amongst my children; Jesse Robert John and Elizabeth.  And I  hereby nominate and appoint my beloved wife Diana and my son Jesse as Executors of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all former Will and Wills by me heretofore made.  In witness whereof I I hereunto set my hand and Seal this Twenty-Sixth Day of August, Anno Domini, 1800.
